I can't say that anymore...

I've always been proud of being able to say, "I don't get sick"

Yes, I have hayfever which gets quite bad in September;
Yes, I have a little asthma;
Yes, I have numerous aches and pains.
A little arthritis.

But generally, I don't get sick.

For years now at work, people have had time off with such things as colds, flu, sore throats, gastro etc.
It's a high risk occupation, we're daily in contact with  many hundreds of people, who may or may not be contagious at any time.
I just didn't catch these things.

I haven't had the flu ever.

But in the last 10 months, I've had gastro (once), a cold twice, and migraine after migraine after migraine.

My good record is gone.
Wiped out.
I'm no longer the girl who never gets sick, always available to fill in a shift for someone else who is sick.

I'm guessing this is in part due to the stress and worry I've had which saw me moping around, not eating properly, not sleeping well.
Feeling sorry for myself, like I knew I shouldn't.
Lowered resistance and all that.

Since moving here to this lovely little flat, the pressures have eased,  I'm certainly sleeping better;
now I need to make sure I eat better.
More fruit, less icecream, that kind of thing.

Now that the Jasmine has stopped blooming quite so ferociously, the hayfever should ease, and the headaches should lessen.

Hopefully, I should soon have the resistance to germs that I used to have.

I do think though, that next year might be a good time to begin having the annual flu shot that many people have every winter.

Just in case.

  1. Poor River. None of those ailments are fun, but migraines are vile and vicious beasties. Heres hoping that you do indeed get your immunity to illness back soon.

  2. Oh no - poor you. It's always worse for really healthy people who never get sick when they DO actually succumb. Hope you're through the worst of that run...

  3. EC; now that I've experienced being ill, I'm even more determined never to be so again if I can possibly help it. I know people who are constantly getting this or that illness and just shrugging it off saying "I always get this at this time of year" and now I'm wondering why they put up with feeling so bad, so often. For instance a friend is always getting tonsillitis, at least three times in the last year. Why not do something about it?

    Life In A Pink Fibro; I certainly hope I don't succumb too often, this last year has been quite enough, I much prefer to be well.

  4. Migraines are a shocker, it's always the case that when the stress stops our bodies hit the wall and we get sick, hopefully you're on the mend!

  5. Definitely get the flu shot River, just to be on the safe side. Migraines and hayfever are bad enough without the flu or gastro or depression or eating badly too. Sounds like you've turned the corner though and I hope that the flowers near you are inclined to hang onto their dust and pollen instead of puff it in your direction. :)

  6. This has likely gotten it out of your system. That let down after stress is a particularly vulnerable time.
    flu shots? Hmmmm. From what I understand they lower your immune systems ability to fight things off and the shot only covers you for one strain of flu. I've never had one myself. If you are prone to eczema or are allergic to eggs you shouldn't get one either, so my husband has never had a flu shot.
    I think I will just stick with my vitamins, hope for the best and take sensible precautions.
    Glad you are starting to feel more like yourself. Take care.

  7. I think the jury is still out on a flu shot. I will write a post in the near future.

  8. Sounds like your immune system is on holiday's, maybe you should take a couple of days off work to recharge your batteries :-).

  9. I tend to be one who never gets sick, but just came up with arthritis a few months ago. I wonder if that counts as being sick. I've never gotten the flu shot and don't plan to since I rely on everyone else to get it. One of these days it will probably get me.

  10. The flu shot doesn't stop you getting the flu but it does lessen the severity. They more or less take a punt on what strain might hit us each winter usually by watching the northern hemisphere. Even my sister who has an egg allergy had the shot this year after watching elderly patients come to her ward last winter.

  11. Jayne; definitely on the mend now. I feel much more like myself.

    Kath; the Jasmine is the killer and the last few windy days followed by rain have got rid of the pollen and the flowers are dying off now. So I'm safe until next September.

    Delores; I forgot about the flu shot only covering one strain. I'll have to give it more thought. I'll bump up the vitamin intake for a while and eat more proteins.

    Andrew; I'll be sure to read your post.

    Windsmoke; if I take any more days off, they'll forget who I am...

    Towanda; arthritis does not count, it's a lifelong condition, not a sickness that eventually gets better, like a cold.

    JahTeah; I'm going to think more before deciding whether or not to have the shot. I may decide to rely on extra vitamins, some cod liver oil and lots of handwashing with sanitiser.
