Sunday Selections #80

It's Sunday Selections time again!

Time to post photos that have been hiding away in your computer files, photos that you may have completely forgotten about.

This idea comes to us from Kim of Frog Ponds Rock, who realised one day that she takes many more photos than she uses and wanted to post some of them on her blog.

Kim has now retired from Sunday Selections, she has a lot more on her plate these days, but I'll continue posting photos until the mojo runs out.
I'm aiming for 100....

There is no linky list here for anyone to add their name to, but feel free to do your own
Sunday Selections photo posting if you wish.
Perhaps you could link back to me......

This week, I'm bringing you some views of our Torrens River.

The river separates Adelaide from North Adelaide and North Terrace is the last main street before the river.

We start with a photo of one of the many hotels along North Terrace.

This one is the Oaks Horizons Apartment Hotel.

Directly across the road is the Adelaide Convention Centre. It faces North Terrace on one side.....

.....and overlooks the river on the other side. See that curved glass structure on the upper left of the photo?
That's part of the Convention Centre.

Further along the riverbank are steps.....

....leading down to the riverbank from the Festival Theatre, (which I don't have a photo of yet), that fronts onto King William Street and backs onto the riverbank.

King William Street, one of our main roads, crosses the river via this pretty bridge and links Adelaide with North Adelaide.

Some of the things you can see on our river are...

paddleboats, all lined up and ready for a sunny afternoon on the water.

our famous "Popeye", that cruises up and down the river every couple of hours.

You can ride the river and get off at the zoo, see the animals, then get back on the boat when it comes back around again.

There are swans and sometimes baby swans too, (cygnets).

Other water birds too, including many ducks.

We even have a pretty Rotunda.
I hope you've all enjoyed this little peek at part of my city.

  1. The bridge is very handsome indeed. The waters of the Torrens have some unfortunate secrets and memories. Great photos.

  2. Thanks for sharing, I've enjoyed 'walking' through that part of Adelaide. I've only ever been to SA once, it was a relatively short trip and I didn't get to explore the city and surrounds very much. The river looks like it offers up some nice activities... the bridge is handsome and I'm off to see if I can investigate what Andrew means about the Torrens having some unfortunate secrets and memories - very intriguing!

  3. I loved this - thank you so much. It is years since I have been to Adelaide and you brought back some happy memories.
I didn't know that Kim had retired, but you are definitely a worthy successor.

  4. Andrew; I don't know anything about the waters having secrets, apart from a few people drowning in them. I do know that the lake section is man made, so the river no longer runs as freely as it did originally and because of this there is a lot of the toxic algae bloom on a fairly regular basis.

gaby@727m2; there's more activity on the river in the summer months, I'm not sure the paddle boats are used at all during the winter, but the Popeye runs for most of the year and it's quite popular with people doing the full cruise then getting off at the zoo.

EC; I haven't fully taken over the hosting of Sunday Selections, there's no link list for others to add their names to, I'm just continuing with the photo idea. I think it's a nice way to show off bits of my city as well as random photos that I snap here and there.

  5. I used to love Popeye. My grandma would always take me on it during the school holidays.

....must do that again when we come home for Christmas.

  6. Wow, thanks for the tour! So that's where Popeye got to...

  7. Homosexuals lurked along the river-side. Off-duty police invented the sport of tossing them in. One of those tossed in was a university academic and he drowned -a surprise to me, because I thought academics could float on anything.

  8. Kath Lockett; I've only done the Popeye trip once and it was cold and raining. I'll have to go again in the summer.

CarrieBoo; no sign of Olive Oyl though.

R.H. They're still lurking, mostly under the bridges, and there's probably a bit of drug dealing going on too. I wouldn't be going there alone after dark.

  9. These pics bring back memories... Gee but Popeye has gone up a bit in price.. (its been a while)

  10. Tempo; everything's gone up in price! it costs more to run and maintain the Popeye than it did in the 80's. You should see the cost of our zoo admission!
