I woke up this morning...

...which was no surprise to me...I always wake up after being sound asleep for several hours.

It's a habit I've developed over the years.

But this morning there was something different.......something......not nice.

The heavy, yucky feeling of tonsillitis in my throat.

I haven't had this in many, many years, but it's not the sort of feeling one forgets.

So after work, I went straight to the doctor who confirmed what I already knew and prescribed me some penicillin. I very rarely take antibiotics, for most of my life, I just don't get sick.
Off I went to the chemist and I now have in front of me a huge box of good old fashioned penicillin.
50 capsules.

It isn't the more modern amoxycillin or whatever is the current version, which comes in the correct dosage supply for the two weeks it must be taken.
This is a big box of fifty.
The doctor did say I don't have to take all of them, but to be sure and take them for at least a fortnight.
Which I will do of course, but that will leave me with quite a few left over.
22 to be exact.

What does one do with left over penicillin?
I'll return them to the chemist.

Or perhaps string them together as a bracelet........

No, that's too much like work, I'll return them.

  1. Poor River. The doctor must have thought you had got it badly - I don't think they often prescribe penecillin these days. Do you get any time off work? Get better soon. Very soon.

  2. Elephant's Child; it isn't very bad at all, in the early stages. Probably got the penicillin because of my age and the hayfever/asthma, it could go badly if the tonsillitis gets worse. I had the tonsils out when I was 19, but they were deeply recessed and couldn't be completely removed without me haemorraghing, so I have little nubs left and have had a couple of bouts since then. Usually when I'm run down as I was from last week's cold coming on top of bad hayfever. I'm off work anyway until next Wednesday because we have a long weekend here and I took an extra annual leave day for the Tuesday.

  3. I hope you feel better soon. Those little capsules which will cure you, would kill two of my close relatives - my younger brother, and my mother's sister. I guess they "Kill or Cure"!

Here's to a quick recovery - and I hope it doesn't spoil your long weekend too much.

  4. There is a better way to get a sore throat, but I won't go there. Most people would keep the tabs, just in case, and then eventually chuck them in the bin. All that time off, what bliss. Hope you are ok quickly.

  5. I'd be inclined to keep them for one year in case the tonsillitis comes back...after the year is up then take them back to the pharmacist.

  6. Awful. Do what the doctor says and get well soon. Bloggers seem to be getting something today, or getting over it.

  7. Elaine; plenty of people are allergic to penicillin, although I don't know any personally.

Andrew; all this time off is great, but it isn't long enough for all the things I want to get done.

Delores; that's a good plan, keep them for a year.

Joanne; this must be my year for getting sick. First a cold, now this tonsillitis.

  8. We're all infected at home too. I've got bad sore throat. Went to the doctor and said it was just a virus. No antibiotics but it has been a week. I'm coughing as I write this.

  9. That's an intriguing problem. What DO you do?? Maybe ... donate it to a less developed country? Start your own dispensary?? Sell it on the black market??? Maybe publish one of those '100 things to do with ...' books!!!

  10. Joni Ibarra; there is a nasty virus going around. People are coughing all over the place and it seems to take a few weeks to clear.

Red Nomad; I'm really not that creative and I think selling on the black market might land me in a spot of bother. I will only have 22 pills after all.
