Wednesday's Words on a Friday

On Wednesdays, Delores, from A Feathered Nest has a meme which she calls
 "Words for Wednesday".

She puts up a selection of six words which we then use in a short story, if we are able.
Sometimes I look at her words and nothing at all comes to mind.
This week's words are:

1. ignorant
2. monstrosity
3. grating
4. fiend
5. speckled
6. lavender

here is my short story:

Great Aunt Margaret was nobody's friend. The old biddy was eighty years old and had been known all her life as a meddling nosy-parker.

Her latest hobby was visiting houses for sale on their open inspections days. She'd poke into every room and open all cupboards, even turning on taps and flushing the toilet to check the plumbing.
She would discuss the house and its decor for weeks after, and never in a good way. Things were too modern, too old-fashioned, too cluttered, too sparse etc. The furniture was awful, tattered, there were dishes in the sink and so on.

On this occasion she had made me accompany her to the showing of an old Georgian mansion, once owned by her primary school friend, Betty. They'd had a fight in high school and neither had ever forgiven the other.

Aunt Margaret was positively high with glee at the chance to see inside Betty's old home.
As we wandered through the house, Aunt Margaret's loud, grating voice could be heard echoing scathingly off the empty walls.

"Just look at this monstrosity! What ignorant fiend would cover every single room in her house with  pink and green speckled lavender wallpaper! Even the kitchen and toilet!"

On this occasion, I found I did have to agree with Aunt Margaret. It did look awful and I knew Aunt Margaret would have gossip material for at least a month.

Comments

  1. That is a great story but I'm too not sure about this old biddy called Margaret who is 80!!! i'm not like that at all...really I'm not. lol
I've known people that go to "homes open" just to have a sticky beak. I wouldn't do it as I'd be sure to find a place I'd fall in love with but would be unable to buy.

  2. Bravo! Extraordinary! Superb insight!

I go to open inspections around here just to look in the fridge.

  3. Brilliant. And there are a lot of people who 'tyre-kick' at open houses here too.

  5. I use to participate in a 3 word Wednesday writing prompt and have missed doing so (and have written fewer posts). Nice story

  6. I don't know why I do it. There could be some connection to my days as a Peeping Tom.

  7. What a super characterization of Great Aunt Margaret! I think we've all known people just like that. (They're the same ones who have to snoop inside everyone's medicine cabinets.)

  8. Mum and I had a lovely time when her house came up for sale again. I downloaded all the photos and took them to the nursing home and we shredded their taste in furniture and all the awful alterations they'd done.

  9. sage; perhaps you could do your own three word Wednesdays, open the dictionary and choose words at random, then write a story.

R.H. I used to do it to get decorating ideas.

Susan; and snoop in the kitchen cabinets too.

JahTeh; I did similar when we offered to buy the house we were renting and the landlord said no way it isn't for sale. So we moved on and a month later it was for sale. A year or so after that it was open for inspection, so we went along to see how they'd fixed it up and it was horrendous.
