I've read this before, but it is still bloody funny

I read this recently at fishducky's website, I've read it before, many years ago, but I still find it hilarious.

"During the initial space flights, Nasa discovered that biro (ball point) pens didn’t work under zero gravity conditions. To beat the problem, Nasa spent 6 years and $2 million in designing a pen for use in space.
The pen would work under zero gravity conditions due to the pressurized ink inside, it would work under sub zero conditions, underwater, on glass and virtually any surface known to man.
The Russians came up with a solution.
They used a pencil."

Ha Ha!!

Time and money, too much of both, wasted by Nasa, on a new type of pen, and the Russians used something they already had.
A pencil.
Which needed no modification at all.

  1. I laugh every time I come across this. The simple things often are the best...
Thank you (and Fishducky) for the reminder.

  5. Nice one. I have heard that in days before pressurised aircraft cabins, biros would empty out in people's pockets.

  6. This is true; many years ago in Oxford a student from the university saw me knocking on a door looking for somewhere to stay. He gave me the bed in his room at the university and made himself a rough bed on the floor. I slept in my jeans -not worried that he might be a poof, they were rather obscure in those days- and during the night a biro in my back pocket leaked blue ink all over the sheet. He was from Magdalen College and I often think of him. Maybe he's a professor by now. Bowler hat and umbrella for sure.

  7. Is anyone else seeing my writing run off the page?? It hasn't happened before, but today all my posts here seem to have been lopped along the right side.

Elephant's Child; I laugh every time too, I guess that's why these things keep going around, laughing is good.

    Delores; and so true too.

Merlesworld; how many pencils could the Russians get for that sort of money?

    Vicki; chuckle - there's a word I haven't heard for a while.

Andrew; that's one of the reasons Nasa spent so much money perfecting their pen.

R.H. I'm wondering why you would keep a biro in your back pocket? Weren't you worried it might break when you sat down? I once snapped a library card in half that way.

  8. What amazes me is his family were turning up next morning for the boat races on the
Thames, a big day at Oxford. Meanwhile I got a tour of the university, meeting quite a few eggheads.

  9. Yes, your page is running off to the right side. Pencil is fine but it can be erased, so a fancy pen is required.

  10. R.H. a tour of the Uni, lucky you.

mm; I wish I knew why this is happening and how to fix it.

Anybody have any helpful ideas on how to fix my page?

  11. Some consultants earned a fat fee for that.

re: dead penguin chicks - some years there's not enough food or the winter is too severe or perhaps the parents can't provide enough food. It is sad though.

  12. Hi River,

Very funny - and not surprising at all.

    :-)
