Wednesday's Words on a Friday

On Wednesday’s, Delores, from Under The Porch Light, has a meme which she calls
“Words for Wednesday”.

She puts up a selection of six words which we then use in a short story, if we are able.
Sometimes I look at her words and nothing at all comes to mind.
Sometimes a story suggests itself immediately.

It’s a fun challenge…why not join in?

This week's words are:

1. honesty
2. carriage
3. flagrant
4. specific
5. mustard
6. grain

Here is my short story:

The gentleman at table three lost his temper. "For pete's sake! I was very specific! I asked for a ham and cheddar on whole-grain bread. This is a ham and swiss on rye. With hot mustard!  And you're telling me I ordered this? No one has any honesty anymore. This is a flagrant mis-carriage of....of....of something!"

Just then his wife returned to the table and calmly told him to stop making a fuss as she quietly apologised to the waitress.

"but...but..." he spluttered.

She said, "you did order a ham and swiss on rye with hot mustard. For me, remember?  The poor girl you're screaming at has simply put the plates in the wrong place. Here's your sandwich in front of my seat!"

Comments

  1. His poor wife. It was all about him. I didn't warm to that man - and would like to set Ruby-Mae onto him. Unkindness to waitresses is so very wrong.

  2. Susan Kane; there's a few like him around. This is based on true life, a friend of mine.

Elephant's Child; he's recovering from a nervous breakdown and his medication needs tweaking. Based on true life, told to me by his wife.

  3. Ruby-Mae and I are backing off now. That poor man.

  4. It takes a wife to calm things down. We've actually had that happen to us...reversed plates. Great use of the words.

  5. Elephant's Child; it's been two years and he is much more stable now, but still not the man he used to be. He doesn't tell jokes anymore...there's a hollowness in his eyes.

Delores; this particular wife understands her husband very well.

  6. Terrific use of the words! (You're a natural at this, aren't you?)

I've known people exactly like that man, only they didn't have a medical condition or medications to blame it on. They were simply jerks. How fortunate for the man you know in real life that he has a compassionate wife who knows exactly how to smooth things over.

  7. Nice use of the words!
I hope he was suitably embarrassed.

  8. Oh dear he did put his foot in his mouth.

  9. Susan; I've known jerks like that too, always trying to show who's the boss, and some of them make a fuss over nothing trying to get a meal for free. Bunch of big showoffs they are. And it reflects badly for those who do have a real problem, since managements often think "oh, here's another tosser..."

Jackie K; he was more upset. This is a true story, he was on medication for a mental problem.

Merlesworld, he didn't do it on purpose. Read the rest of the comments.
