  9. Merry Christmas to you my friend. Loved your delightful collection of Christmas pics and those decorations in the mall are lovely. At least most capital cities in Oz will have a day that is not TOO hot. Perth 31 and Adelaide 33. We must be satisfied with that. Cheers.

  13. Thankyou, River. I've so enjoyed your posts and comments over the year.

I wish you and your family a very Merry Christmas. One full of love, health and lots of happiness.

We celebrate on the Eve here, so for once we are ahead of you guys in Australia. Dec 25th is hangover day... :-)

  14. Marie; Merry Christmas to you and your family. I remember celebrating on the Eve when we were very small, before Mum left us. Other kids thought we were silly not knowing which day was Christmas Day. I don't know when I stopped doing that, but by the time I had children it was definitely a Christmas Day celebration.

  16. Manzanita; it was a hurry-up-and-find-some-pictures post before I went to bed the night before. Turned out pretty well though. Merry Christmas to you and your family.

  17. I've asked about why they celebrate the Eve rather than Christmas Day and it's apparently due to the edicts of the old Lutheran church. They forbad any sort of party or celebration on a holy day or a Sunday. Those days were reserved for prayer, quiet contemplation and very long church services.

Many families travelled long distances to gather together for Christmas. And of course it's the middle of winter here as well, so not the best time to travel. Thus it seemed a good idea to party the day before when everyone had arrived - you could welcome them with a big spread and distribute gifts etc, leaving Christmas Day for church (and dad's hangover).

It's interesting to see all the ways Christmas is celebrated around the world and how it is adapted to the articular countries. My family are from Holland, so they celebrated Sinterklaas Eve on December 5th. My ex is Italian, so they had gifts given by La Befana at the Epiphany as well, so my kids got a month long celebration of Christmas traditions.

  18. Marie; thank you for that, I had no idea about the Christmas Eve origins, it never occurred to me to ask when I was little, I just accepted what had always been. I'm a Lutheran, but not a church goer, apparently there are "high" Lutherans and "low" Lutherans, I'm not sure about the difference, something to do with the style of service I think, with the high Lutheran church service being similar to Catholic Mass, full of ritual etc. My dad was Catholic and often told us how he had been asked to leave church because he'd skull down the wine and ask for more.
