Sunday Selections #158

Welcome back to Sunday Selections!

This once-a- week-meme was originally begun by Kim of Frog Ponds Rock, as a way to showcase some of the many photos we all take, but don't get around to showing on our blogs.

The rules are very simple:-
1. post photos of your choice, old or new, under the Sunday Selections title
2. link back to me, River, somewhere in your post
3. leave me a comment so that I know you've joined in and can come over and see what you've posted.

Andrew often joins in as well, as does Jackie K at Working Through It.

I usually go with a theme for my Sunday Selections and this week I'm showing views from Semaphore Beach.

I went out there on January 25th, the day before Australia Day, hoping to see some kite flying

There weren't any kites which was a little disappointing, but I did spot.......

a parachutist

 and a shark-spotter helicopter.

an abandoned tent in the dunes....somebody probably sleeps on the beach in the summer

a few boats out on the water

and a mosaic decorated water bubbler on the foreshore court.

just look at that amazing blue sea, sky and white sand.

There's a good reason why Adelaide is known as "The Athens of the South"

on the other side of the jetty was this tideline of seaweed

and this pretty little sandcastle.

Now for some jetty photos......

you just can't have beach photos without the jetty shots.

looking through the pylons

you'll notice some of those pylons are metal, they've replaced a few of the old wooden ones that have rotted away or been storm damaged over the years.

this is the low end right up by the forecourt, see the seaweed? the tide sometimes comes right up the sand. It's called a king tide I believe.

and here's a photo looking along the dunes to the left of the jetty.

I hope these bring a little warmth to those of you currently snowbound up there in the northern hemisphere.

You'll notice the sky is different shades of blue, it seemed to make a difference when I had the sun directly behind me as opposed to over my shoulder.

  3. You had a pretty good "spotting day.' All the pictures are impressive but the thing I enjoy the most is the blue, blue sky. So pure compared to the skies around here. They used to look like that. Very interesting day at the beach.

  4. Warmth is not what I want, but they are great photos. Under jetty photography must be an Adelaide thing. Maybe you just have good jetties for taking photos.

  5. After a disgustingly hot, sleepless night, these images of cool blue water are a lovely respite.
Really like the mosaic water bubbler.

  6. I always wanted to windsurf one time in my life. I should have gone alone; people always discouraged me.

  7. Like Delores, I'm trying really hard too..... I enjoyed the walk, thank you!

  8. What a wonderful wander you had and fantastic photographs. Loved the mosaics and the different hues of blue of the sky. I often find our skies can be so blue they are almost difficult to look at....the brightness can be dazzling. I love them but also love clouds and we just don't see enough of them over here in the West.
For some reason the very last photo really took my fancy.
Thanks for sharing another experience of yours.

  10. No kites but ONLY a parachutist?! ahhhh... that's pretty unique, there!! :)

  11. Delores; just print that out and pin it up by your breakfast table.

Merle; it was a good walk wasn't it? Did you enjoy the icecream?

Manzanita; skies are like that all over Australia, we don't get smog down here. even in winter we often see blue, blue skies.

Andrew; maybe you could take a dip in the ocean instead, to cool off. We do have some great jetties here.

Vicki; and there's more heat on the way, put a clean dry towel in your freezer, then sleep on that. It helps a lot.

Joanne; windsurfers is another thing I was hoping to see there, maybe next time. Maybe you could still try it, with a buddy surfer, like those who parachute for the first time with a buddy.

Gillie; you can look at my sunshiny photos anytime you need a little warmth.

Mimsie; it was a great day. I find our skies much easier to look at now I have good sunglasses.

Rose~from OZ; thanks, I'd like one day to get dawn or sunset photos, but that would mean being up and about too early and too late, being out alone in the dark isn't as appealing as it used to be.

Happy Elf Christine; you're right, it is unique, I don't think I've ever photographed a parachutist before.

  12. Your sons will like this too.

    THE X-47B

Just 4 months ago ( July 10, 2013 ) the Navy successfully conducted take-offs and landings from a fairly new nuclear aircraft carrier, the USS George H.W. Bush, with a new stealth jet called the X-47B.

What is so different about this plane is the fact that it is a 'drone'. Yes, it is completely unmanned. Drones come in all sizes, and theX-47B is likely one of the larger ones.

What is so ironic about all of this is, the fact that the enemy cannot detect a plane like this in the first place. In the unlikely event they get lucky at shooting one down, there will be no human loss of life or captivity. As you view the flight deck crew signaling the plane, they are simply signaling the on-board cameras, who in turn are being manned by staff inside the command intelligence center ( CIC )onboard the ship.

Also check out the short distance this plane needs for a takeoff. Impressive indeed.

  14. I love looking at the ocean. The sky is so BLUE there. Living in FL, we often get very blue sky, too. I love that.

    Thanks for sharing your day!

  15. Vest; welcome to drifting. I'm sure my boys can find the clip on their own, they're grown men.

Jodee Weiland; welcome to drifting. I enjoy the beach, more in winter when the waves are crashing though.

Robin; the blue is incredible isn't it?

  16. OMG! Look at that blue sky! I haven't seen ANY sun, let alone sky since November.... *wildly jealous*

Gosh, they've spruced up old Semaphore haven't they? It looks almost trendy now - love the mosaic drinking fountain. We often took the bus to Semaphore in the summer and walked on the jetty eating double scoops of icecream. I liked the beach when the kids were little as you could go out a long way and it was still shallow and the waves were gentle. Lovely memories.

  17. Marie; it is a lot different from what I remember seeing once in my mid teens. It's really trendy now. Feel free to look at my blue sky as much as you like.
