Sunday Selections # 167

Welcome back to Sunday Selections!

This once-a-week-meme was originally begun by Kim of Frog Ponds Rock, as a way to showcase some of the many photos we all take, but don't get around to showing on our blogs.

The rules are very simple:-
1. post photos of your choice, old or new, under the Sunday Selections title
2. link back to me, River, somewhere in your post
3. leave me a comment so that I know you've joined in and can come over and see what you've posted.
4. hop on over to The Elephant’s Child to see more of her wonderful photos.

Kath and Andrew often join in as well, although Kath :( has been quite busy lately and unable to join us.
There are several other participants now though:

I usually go with a theme for my Sunday Selections and this week I'm continuing with some photos of my walk towards North Adelaide.

After crossing Albert Bridge I walked along War Memorial Drive and saw a back view of some of the Zoo buildings. I hope I haven't already showed you this, it's the prettiest, most of the others were just sheds and roofs.

Did I show you Albert Bridge? I really must organise this folder better....

this is Albert Bridge.....

and this is the side you see when crossing it.

Before I crossed, I walked past the new, modern zoo entrance and found the old entrance.

which is much prettier in my opinion.

just look at that amazing brickwork!

even around the curves in the fence.

I wish this entrance was still in use.
The new entrance is all glass and steel and shine...

so I've crossed the bridge and walked along behind the zoo for a bit and saw this....

a very nicely decorated Campervan.

and this wonderfully shaped dead tree overhanging the water of the Torrens.

A few joggers huffed and puffed past me..... and just when I thought I'd turn back and head for North Adelaide, I saw loaves of uncut bread tossed on the side of the road.....

and spotted this magpie having lunch. He was so busy tearing into the bread he barely noticed me.

More next week...

  2. What a wonderful walk - and yes, the old entrance to the zoo is charming. Really charming.
The magpies would have to fight the cockatoos here to get that bread.

  8. klahanie; I'm glad you enjoy these little glimpses of my small corner of the world.

Elephant's Child; I have since learned there are signs in many of the parks advising people NOT to feed the birds with breads, cakes etc as it isn't good for them. The old zoo entrance has more charm than the new for sure.

Gillie; I'm glad you enjoy walking around with me.

Christine; I don't remember when or why the zoo entrance was changed, all I know is the new entrance is much more modern and capable of handling large crowds. It has an airport ticket counter feel to it.

Andrew; that bridge and the old zoo entrance make a lovely area for walking, with that part of the river and surrounds being well designed and maintained.

Joanne; those brick colours are the originals, it was designed and built using different coloured bricks.

    fishducky; thank you.

  9. I have a real soft spot for that area. We were zoo members for many years and sponsored an animal as well, so we visited it quite often as it was not so far from home. I love the old entrance and the lovely wall around the perimeter.

I hadn't realised that there was another entrance (or do you mean the one out the back off Botanic Park, near the Children's Zoo?). I can imagine that some zealous "health and safety" person didn't like a narrow footpath and a curve on a busy road and thought it was dangerous for children (whose parents these days are busy Facebooking rather than watching them). But I liked taking Popeye from the Festival Centre and then hopping off at Albert Brige and crossing straight over Frome Road to the gate.

  10. I am not sure who decided that "new" is better... the government, the architects? Both of them. Seems like a foolish way to spend the money when the old entrance to that zoo is gorgeous. I, too, prefer the elaborate brickwork to steel and glass.

Love the Albert Bridge. Never been there, but those photos... :D

  11. I like the old entrance too.

  12. Lovely walk, thank you River.

There was much beauty and pride taken in brickwork of old. They were craftsmen in those days.

  13. Marie; I've thought about being a Zoo member, but a lack of $$$ is holding me back. Ditto with sponsoring an animal. There is no entrance near the children's zoo (which is looking pitiful these days), the new modern entrance is closer to the botanic park. I'll photograph it and its surrounds next time I'm out that way so you can see where it is and what it looks like.

Robin; probably bean-counters, looking for a way to get more people in at once so make more money. The Zoo does desperately need more money.

    Delores; it is beautiful.

Vicki; where are the craftsmen today though? Such work takes time and in the past few decades "everyone" (who? Not me...)has wanted "quick, hurry, build it now! we can't wait", so craftsmanship has fallen away. There are some artists now who are beginning to research the old methods and learn them, but there aren't enough of the old craftsmen left I fear. And the newbies will have to adjust using modern methods.

  14. River, you're right that is absolutely stunning brickwork!!
