Sunday Selections # 173

Welcome back to Sunday Selections!

This once-a- week-meme was originally begun by Kim of Frog Ponds Rock, as a way to showcase some of the many photos we all take, but don't get around to showing on our blogs.

The rules are very simple:-
1. post photos of your choice, old or new, under the Sunday Selections title
2. link back to me, River, somewhere in your post
3. leave me a comment so that I know you've joined in and can come over and see what you've posted.
4. hop on over to The Elephant's Child to see more of her wonderful photos.

Kath and Andrew often join in as well, although Kath has been quite busy lately and unable to join us, and Andrew is holidaying in Europe. Hopefully taking lots of photos.

There are several other participants now though:

I usually go with a theme for my Sunday Selections and this week I have a few Zoo photos for you.

I went to the Zoo yesterday with two of the friends I used to work with. We wandered around for several hours taking photos and generally catching up.

Today's photos are all Australian, for those Aussies living in the northern hemisphere and missing home, and for all my northern hemisphere friends who may have never seen a kookaburra, koala or kangaroo.

On with the show!

kangaroos. there were several in the enclosure this time, six or eight of them, when I was there in January I only saw one, a big red. These are all smaller and darker so perhaps they are young ones.

lifting his head ever so slightly, then putting it back down, he couldn't be bothered looking at the camera.

well, maybe a quick peek...

...or two.

and back to sleep.

You're going to love the next few photos.

one koala,

but he moved a bit and I moved the camera,

ever so slightly,

for each shot. I was happy to get these, most times I see a koala they are just a sleeping grey lump high in a tree.

Finally a kookaburra.

in an enclosure. A large enclosure, but still, he's confined.

you can just see a hint of the blue that is under his wings.
He appeared sleepy, so we moved on, going back to the lion enclosure as it was almost feeding time and we wanted good positions with our cameras at the ready.
Come back next Sunday to see them.

  1. Love, love, love the koalas. Grey lump high in the trees has been my experience too.

  2. I've not been to the zoo for years but would love to do go again. I hear you can hire gofers so perhaps not an idle dream. Would be good if you could hire 2-seaters. Sorry, I was just thinking aloud.
Love your photos and wondering why a kookaburra would be in a cage. Could have been injured at some time perhaps. Koalas just do it for me, every time.
I am so looking forward to see the lions being fed and lots of other beautiful creatures as well in coming weeks.
"Whip Hand" in the mail to you yesterday.

  3. Lovely pics, River.

I wonder why they would cage a kookaburra...even if the enclosure is large? Perhaps he'd been injured at one stage.

I've got a family of kookas who visit me every day; they know, without fail, they'll get the meat scraps from when I cut up my two cats' dinner every afternoon. The kookaburras and their other mates...the maggies, butcher birds, currawongs and a couple of crows all gather around my cabin. They have their pecking order...and it is as above. They also have their look-out posts!

They keep a watch on me throughout the day...they know my every move and can tell the time of the day from it! ;)

Whenever I have fruit that's gone a bit off, that gets tossed out, too...so the non-meaters get their share as well. Nobody goes without!

  4. Aren't koalas especially just gorgeous. Great shots. Looks like you had good weather too. A day at the zoo is a great day.

  5. Elephant's Child; it really is only one koala. I took four photos of him, planning to use whichever shot came out best, but they were all so good I had to use them.

Mimsie; a gopher hire would be a great idea! I wonder if supermarkets and malls would do that too? I was sad to see a kookaburra in a cage, but maybe he isn't in there all the time. I didn't think to ask. Perhaps he is recovering from something. Thank you for the book, I'll look out for it.

Lee; how lovely to have so many birds around! And nice of you to put out fruit too, I'm sure everybody enjoys it and thanks you somehow. Angel is getting a little raw beef tonight when I trim my steak before cooking it.

Jackie K; it was perfect weather, sunny, a little cool in the breeze, plenty of shade in the grounds too.

  6. Your koala does look sleepy, good job catching him on the brink.

  7. So pretty! The kangaroos seem to have thicker fur than I remember. :)

  8. Nice photos, River!

I miss the sound of the kookaburras
    *sniffle*

  9. Joanne; I think he had just woken up because when I spotted him he was just settling himself on the branch.

Christine; that's what makes me think they are young ones.

Kath; there is a site where you can hear them but I don't remember what it is. Perhaps you could google them. I love to hear them laughing.

  10. Kath; if you email me your postal address I can send you a stuffed kookaburra that laughs, they're available here in the National Geographic shop in the Myer Centre.
