Sunday Selections # 178

Welcome back to Sunday Selections!

This once-a- week-meme was originally begun by Kim of Frog Ponds Rock, as a way to showcase some of the many photos we all take, but don't get around to showing on our blogs.

The rules are very simple:-
1. post photos of your choice, old or new, under the Sunday Selections title
2. link back to me, River, somewhere in your post
3. leave me a comment so that I know you've joined in and can come over and see what you've posted.
4. hop on over to The Elephant’s Child to see more of her wonderful photos.

Kath and Andrew often join in.
There are a couple of other participants too:
Jackie K at WorkingThrough It

I usually go with a theme for my Sunday Selections and this week I'm continuing with some photos from my visit to the Zoo

This week, Monkeys.

not sure what monkey these two are,

I think Macaques.

the Orang-Utans like to hide under blankets.

she's coming out....

eating something.
She didn't come right out and walk around, so we moved on.
I heard on the news last night that she is (or may be) pregnant again.
Her first two pregnancies haven't been successful, the previous baby being stillborn or dying soon after birth.
the golden gibbon and the young black one.

and the baby golden gibbon. That's her arm and leg wrapped around Mum. At the time of taking this photo Zoo staff were still unsure as to gender, a week later we learned the baby is a girl and a notice was in the newspaper asking for ideas for her name. The black gibbon is the older sibling, a brother.

Baby has a look around.

on the move again while baby holds on tight

Mum and brother are very protective of the baby.

a quiet cuddle moment

and a cuddle for the brother.

not sure what type of monkey this is, a lemur?

and another unknown monkey type.

I should have photographed the signs that told each type.

  3. The monkeys seem to have a nice habitat. The blanket tent is interesting to see; hope the pregnancy goes well this time.

  4. Some days I would like to hide under a blanket too.
Love your monkey shots - thank you.

  5. Maybe she was cold, I'm under a blanket most of the time lately.
great photos of the monkey families

  6. I've done that. Of course I will remember the name of this animal etc. And I don't. The orangutans hiding under blankets is very cute. I think you have the lemur correct.

  7. River, That was so nice to see your congratulatory note to Elephant's Child on my blog yesterday. It's taking me awhile to reply to reply to everyone but I wanted to say how much I appreciated that! Vickie

  8. Aren't they all gorgeous! You're a very good zoo photographer I have to say. My animal photos at the zoo usually come out terribly. These look like you were in the enclosures with them!
Love the way that first one is sitting, and the orang peeking from under her blanket.

  10. Monkeys remind me so much of us but then they are our cousins aren't they?
You have some beautiful shots here and thank you for sharing them with us.
Hope your weekend is going well and Angel's too of course.
Must get a couple more books in the mail to you.

  11. These are lovely to see, River - thank you for posting them. I will never understand how some people can say "just an animal" and consider them to have no feelings ...

  12. fishducky; my favourite animal! Along with the big cats. I have a bedroom shelf full of monkeys.

Musings, Tea and Me; thank you. I'm getting the hang of the camera, slowly. I always post a congratulations.

Joanne; there are several monkey habitats, with different varieties in each. The blankets are loose and the orang-utans carry them around.

Elephant's Child; I spent most of today hiding under a blanket. I woke up this morning and the day just went downhill from there.

Merle; they carry the blankets and sleep under them a lot, even in summer. Perhaps they don't like being gawked at.

Jackie K; it's very much a case of take a thousand photos and keep the best ten. I was with a friend who takes excellent photos and she was giving me tips on how to focus so the fence isn't the feature. I still get it wrong sometimes. A LOT. A lot of the time I'll get the animal in focus and it will move just as I click the shutter.

Happy Christine; thank you. I really liked the way the young black male gibbon was protecting his mum and sister, he was keeping away the adult male.

Mimsie; monkeys are very much like us, it's why I like them so much. This weekend has been a write off, best forgotten.

jenny_o; thank you, more zoo photos next week.

  15. I found out about your meme through Elephant's Child and decided to join in this week. Thanks very much it was good fun!

Your monkey shots made me smile. :)

  16. Life happens; I used to want to volunteer at the zoo, now I don't know that I'd get around easily enough, with the joint troubles I have.

LL Cool Joe; welcome to drifting. I'll come over and see your post. You're welcome to join in as often as you like.

  17. Very sweet images.
I think I'd eat under a sheet too, with people watching me.

  18. Vicki; I find it odd. Years ago I'd see the big male always out on view ans swinging from ropes and stuff or throwing things at spectators, unless he was asleep in his little hut. No hiding under blankets and I don't think they do that in the wild either.
