Wednesday's Words on a Friday

On Wednesdays, Delores, from Under The Porch Light, has a word challenge meme which she calls “Words for Wednesday”.

She puts up a selection of six words which we then use in a short story, or a poem.

I’m hopeless at poetry so I always do a story.

It’s a fun challenge…why not join in?

Delores is taking a break from the challenge for a few weeks, so I'll put up a piece or six that I wrote on my own without words from Delores, and hope I haven't featured them before.

Here is my story:

"Joseph Raphael Davidson! Just where do you think you're going?"

Joe froze, his hand on the doorknob already turned to open.

"I was just gunna see Butch for a minute."

"Oh no, no, no" she said. "That dog was down by the pond this morning, he's still filthy and you're already in your best suit.

"Aw mum, I'll stay clean, I promise!"

Mary hauled him away from the door and locked it firmly. As they walked back down the hall she muttered at him, "If I had a dollar for every time you promised to stay clean, I'd be rich."

Joe couldn't help but smile at that. It was true, he and clean just didn't seem to get along. Mum probably wished she could scrub the great outdoors....

"Now sit in that chair and don't move. The photographer will be here any minute and you can play with Butch as soon as the Christmas photos are done. And no pulling funny faces this year! Joe? You listening? NO funny faces! Are we clear?"

"Yes mum."

And no more 'gunna', the word is 'going to'.

"That's two words Mum," Joe said softly and Mary ruffled his hair, then quickly smoothed it down again as the photographer's car was heard in the driveway.

Mary called up the stairs, "Bridget? The photographer is here, come on down now, we'll get these photos done and sent so Grandma can see how big you've both grown since last Christmas.

  1. No funny faces? That's not a true Christmas photo then lol.

  2. No funny faces? No dirt? How will Grandma recognise him...
And some children ARE dirt magnets. When one of my brothers friends came out with us there was always a spare set of clothes for him. And he usually needed them.

  3. Delores; don't worry, Joe does at least one funny face, he just can't help himself. But the photographer takes many photos.

Elephant's Child; my brother was just such a dirt magnet. My mum would have him spit polished and tied to a chair, then still have to change his shirt & wash his face and hands again before we left for wherever we were going.

  4. Love it...you painted a good picture without the use of a brush or a photographer...you did it with the use of words.

  6. Lee; thank you. Just as well I didn't use a brush, I'm pretty bad at painting.

Barbara; I know a few dirt magnets myself.
