Sunday Selections # 205

Welcome back to Sunday Selections!

This once-a- week-meme was originally begun by Kim of Frog Ponds Rock, as a way to showcase some of the many photos we all take, but don't get around to showing on our blogs.

The rules are very simple:-
1. post photos of your choice, old or new, under the Sunday Selections title
2. link back to me, River, somewhere in your post
3. leave me a comment so that I know you've joined in and can come over and see what you've posted.
4. hop on over to The Elephant’s Child to see more of her wonderful photos.
  Andrew often joins in too.

I usually go with a theme for my Sunday Selections but this week I have a random collection.

early morning sun through the trees

a near empty street on Christmas Eve morning. I was waiting for a bus and maybe five cars passed by instead of the usual five thousand.

spot the sparrow. Taken through the bus window.

window reflections. The rising sun on that brown building on the left is reflected in the shiny glass of the building just past the trees. It looked better in real life.

our stunning new Ibis Hotel which has been open for business for a couple of months now, seems to be doing well judging by the number of people I see entering and leaving each time I walk past. The interior is all shiny black surfaces just like the exterior, very glamorous.

I hope everyone has now recovered from their New Years Eve celebrations.

  1. Nice selection of sun and shadow. What will the new year bring to your photo selections? Can't wait to find out.

  2. I love shiny buildings but have never done them justice. In another life I would be an art photographer.

  4. Look at you! Your photos are getting more artistic all the time. I love the shadow-and-light shots, especially.

  5. LOVE those reflections. And am feeling a bit ashamed and stuck in the mud with my selections this week.
Stay as cool as you can. And stay safe. I really, really hope those fires are contained and the smoke disperses too.

  6. Hi River,

I'm loving the variety. You have captured an ambience of contrasts. Your photographic prowess is such that you are taking photos of things that many might just not notice.

    Thank you, River.

  7. Great photos, River. I hope you and Angel have eased into 2015 effortlessly. Have a good week...cuddles to your furrry friend. :)

  8. Delores; I can't wait to find out either. I just need to take my camera out more. I used to carry it everywhere.

Joanne; you could start your "another life" now. You don't really need sleep do you? (*~*)

fishducky; me too; strong lines, symmetry, I especially love the elongated coppery diamonds on the Bank building.

Susan; the very first digital photos I ever took way back in 2010 were architectural, all angles and shadows.

Elephant's Child; reflections are funny things to photograph, sometimes what the eye sees just isn't captured by the camera, other times an unexpected reflection becomes the focal point of the photo. I can't smell smoke today like I could yesterday, not sure if that means the fires are being controlled or if the wind is blowing in a different direction. I certainly hope they are slowly being contained and starting to die out. I'm safe where I am, being so close to the city, but I have a son&his family in the north-eastern suburbs and a daughter&her family in the hills. Both are far enough away so far, but there is so much vegetation and the winds are still gusting. Daughter knows the dangers and is always ready to evacuate at a moments notice.

klahanie; thank you, I used to often take random shots from odd angles just to get something different and I'm going to do more of that.

Lee; I ease into every new year effortlessly, it's my style. No fuss, that's me. Angel didn't have a clue, for him it was eat sleep, cuddle, sleep as usual.

  9. Sparrow was very well camouflaged.
I like it when the streets are almost empty - reminds me of my childhood, when there were far fewer cars on the road at any given time.
Love your sunlight and shadows - number 80 building is spectacular!

We're now getting a taste of the hideous heat. Were were on high alert yesterday. I was especially worried as we were miles away from home, at the market - which was almost unbearably hot and they announced an early finish. We left at 5 am for the market the winds were already blowing hard and the temperature already very hot. Yuck.

I'm so sorry for those suffering in the S.A., W.A. and Vic. fires. I'm wishing for a summer with fewer fire threats. It's always so dreadful.

    Stay cool, River.

  10. Really good photos this week. The third last of the grassy plant is a knockout.

  11. Vicki; he was in the middle of that driveway just watching the bus, so I got out the camera and off he went hop, hopping across to the shade. Sorry to hear you have the heat now. I dislike summer so much. I'm staying close to the air conditioner these days. It's cooler today though, aircon is off and doors are open to the fresh air.

Andrew; feel free to copy and print. You could frame it for your lounge room.

  12. Love seeing photos taken of the areas where different blog friends live, and I particularly love buildings! So I was lucky coming by today River!

  13. Beautiful and varied pictures much appreciated today and I to loved the close-up of that grass.
Did you know that sparrows are NOT ALLOWED in Western Australia. A sparrow, if seen here, is hunted and shot. Sad but true. Neither do we have blackbirds or mynah birds. The authorities try to protect our orchards etc. so I guess they know what they are doing.
Have been watching the progress (if you can call it that) of those devastating fires in your State and so saddened by the news of the kennels with all those poor innocent animals losing their lives. One can only imagine their terror. We are heading for 41C here tomorrow so fingers crossed about fires. There was a nasty one earlier today near a school in the northern suburbs which was possibly deliberately lit. Fortunately it was brought under control before any real damage was done. I fear this is going to be a long hot summer with a lot of fuel left on the ground which should have been removed earlier than this.
I guess the size of our two states makes it a monumental job to cover all areas with prescribed burning to lessen fuel amounts on the ground.

  14. Rose ~ from OZ; I like photographing buildings, there are so many different styles and each looks different when shots are taken from different angles. A couple of years ago I spent a lot of time on my knees, photographing from the footpath upwards, for a new perspective.

Mimsie; I did know about the birds, seems a shame to kill the pretty little sparrows, I wouldn't have thought they'd do much damage, but perhaps they are prolific breeders.
I saw your fire on the news last night along with scenes from the Victorian fires too. The came scenes from the boarding kennels and I cried a whole new river of tears for the cats and dogs who must have been so terrified. Only 45 dogs survived. No cats survived.
Our fire is still burning on so many fronts and much of the terrain makes it difficult for the CFS crews to get to them. NSW and VIC crews have travelled over to help and we're all very grateful.
One trouble with prescribed burning off is too many "greenies" who declare we are ruining habitat and picket areas where controlled back burning should be going on, so the undergrowth etc just builds up to dangerous proportions.
