Sunday Selections # 207

Welcome back to Sunday Selections!

This once-a- week-meme was originally begun by Kim of Frog Ponds Rock, as a way to showcase some of the many photos we all take, but don't get around to showing on our blogs.

The rules are very simple:-
1. post photos of your choice, old or new, under the Sunday Selections title
2. link back to me, River, somewhere in your post
3. leave me a comment so that I know you've joined in and can come over and see what you've posted.
4. hop on over to The Elephant’s Child to see more of her wonderful photos.
  Andrew often joins in too.

I usually go with a theme for my Sunday Selections and this week I have photos of a few of the things I have collected over the years.

an artificial rose, once tied to a birthday card, now poked between the books on the top shelf.

two quirky little metal birds I found in a secondhand shop in Fremantle.

a rectangular Arnott's biscuit tin designed to look like a delivery truck. It now holds bottles of colours and flavours for cakes and icings.

a plate I discovered in another secondhand shop, makes a nice decorative piece and I also use it for serving cake.

my Mum's mini coffee pot. It stands just 19cm from base to the tip of that little handle on the lid. I don't recall it ever being used, it was one of many pretty things that lived in her crystal cabinet.

a crystal decanter I discovered at a garage sale and paid only $3 for.

I filled it with sparkly and pearly marbles.

a tiny friction engine 4 1/2cm by 5cm high, that I picked up in the tourist/visitor information centre at Port Pirie in 2013.
The Centre is attached to what used to be the "new" railway station, built when I was in high school to replace the railway station that used to be in the main street. Now no trains at all go to Port Pirie.
This little engine is one that you pull backwards a bit then let it go and it runs forward on its own.

an owl hand puppet from Ikea, probably the newest thing here.

Mavis, my Kitchen Witch, was a house warming gift when I moved into my previous home.

Here is what is written on her card.

my set of Mickey Mouse glasses that were available from Hungry Jack's (fast food burger place) years ago with purchase of a meal. I collected all four over four weeks, with the idea of eventually giving the kids one each as they left home.
They all wanted Wizard Mickey, so that didn't work out.
The second glass from the left is actually Steamboat Willie, the original character who eventually became Mickey Mouse.

silvery windchimes, the sound is also "silvery" if you can imagine it. I have several differently styled chimes hanging about the house.

a painting on a slate tile, titled Colonial Homestead and painted by "Jeb", I picked this up quite cheaply when walking along the St Kilda esplanade when we first moved to Melbourne in 1981. I think. Maybe it was our second move there in 1985.

braid edged, embroidered, felted starfish fridge magnet, bought from the WA Aquarium souvenir shop when I visited there while holidaying at my brother's home in Fremantle.
This is larger than it looks here, from tip to tip in any direction it is 10cm, (4 inches) across and quite weighty.

    1. PS: These are the things which make a house a home aren't they?

  4. Each and every one are fun, frivolous happy knick knacks; all wonderful reflections of you.

Have a great week ahead, River...and cuddles to Angel. :)

  5. It is a great collection. Not sure if I like the tin birds or the biscuit tin the most.

  6. Oh Snap!!!
I have the very same silvery windchimes placed at my lounge room window. When it catches the slightest breeze it sends shivers down my spine with its beautiful tones. I love it :)

I also have a kitchen witch. She's been with me in many kitchens watching over me as I brew my concoctions.

And, beautiful glass bottles filled with marbles are always delightful.

Love your collection, River. I like a home with objects that each have their own special story...

  7. Delores; a happening to think about with each item.

Elephant's Child; it's the little things that differentiate between house and home.

fishducky; why am I not surprised?

Lee; and this is just a few of the many I kept when moving here, although the birds and starfish were bought just last year.

Andrew; I like the birds, they're more unique, the biscuit tins were mass produced in the 80s, sold in supermarkets filled with biscuits of some sort.

  8. Vicki; silvery windchimes sound so much better, to me at least, than those bamboo ones that clank. I used to have a set of chimes hanging outside, the tubes were graded from 70cm to almost 1m and they sounded almost like church bells, so musical. But loud and the hubby one day tore them down and threw them under a cupboard. I miss them, gave them away when I moved here.
Is your kitchen witch a "Mavis"?

    1. I love windchimes - hubby not so much, but he puts up with them. I too have the large, long tubular windchimes, which do sound like cathedral bells. So haunting and wonderful to hear and even 'feel' their resonance.
And, I have slightly smaller chimes out the back near the kitchen window.
I love breezy days when my delightful chimes ring.

Wooden/bamboo ones grate on my nerves. I much prefer the tubular metal windchimes.

No, my kitchen witch isn't a Mavis.
Esmeralda. Helpful, but with a wicked sense of humour - she lets me burn the odd dish if I don't keep an eye on it - to teach me a lesson :)

  9. I love everything here. My personal favourite has got to be that coffee pot, it is stunningly gorgeous. :)

  10. I loved everything from that beautiful artificial rose right through to that starfish fridge magnet so to many to really mention but that coffee pot is beautiful. How does Angel react to the little engine? Some cats love items like that while others are terrified. Just wondering. Thank you for sharing so many beautiful items. Makes my house seem quite bare in comparison.

  11. Vicki; my large wind chime is long gone and I very much hope someone else is enjoying it. I'd like to see pictures of your chimes and Esmerelda some day.

Snoskred; I like the coffee pot too, but I'll never use it. I just make instant coffee straight in the cup. also I don't want to accidentally break the pot, it isn't as sturdy as it looks.

Mimsie; Angel tries to eat the little engine, so I keep it up high and get it down when my little great nephew visits. He is walking now.
