Thursday Thoughts #27

Yes, yes, another Harry Dresden story quote....

“Anger is just anger. It isn’t good. It isn’t bad. It just is. What you do with it is what matters. It’s like anything else. You can use it to build or to destroy. You just have to make the choice.”
“Constructive anger,” the demon said….
“Also known as passion,” I said quietly.
“Passion has overthrown tyrants and freed prisoners and slaves. Passion has brought justice where there was slavery. Passion has created freedom where there was nothing but fear. Passion has helped souls rise from the ashes of their horrible lives and build something better, stronger, more beautiful.”

Probably not the best thoughts to be thinking on New Years Day, but there it was, sitting in my drafts folder.

So now think about that last paragraph. "Passion has" etc.

Perhaps your New Years Resolutions have some passion in them?

Was there something going on last year that has made you passionate about changing or resolving the issue?
Passion can also equal determination.
Use this passion to keep your resolutions.
If you made any that is.
I don't bother.

Have you resolved to be a better person?
Think some deep thoughts about what this might mean.
What is it about yourself that you want to change?

Become a better cook? Think about why. For the health of yourself, your husband and children? Or because you really enjoy (have a passion for)cooking and want to learn more?
Both of these reasons will help you keep that resolution.
If you don't like cooking, you're in trouble with this one. Restaurants will love you.....

Learn to be better at budgeting? saving money?
If you have a goal, such as saving for a house or holiday, or simply to get out of debt, this resolution might just make it happen. Hold on to your passion
Simply resolving to get rich isn't going to work.

Do you want to be more sharing and caring?
If it is in your nature to do so, then your passion to change yourself, your resolution, can be kept.

If you are not a naturally nurturing person, this resolution will soon be broken.

Same if you have resolved to be more outgoing, get out and about, meet people, talk to people.
Fine if that is in your nature and you've been hiding away because of a broken heart or some other sorrow and now you want to dive into the world again.
A good resolution which will be kept. Your passion will help you here.

But if you are a loner who prefers not to mix with people, this resolution will also be broken.

Resolutions to lose weight will only work if you stop eating as if it were Christmas or Easter all year round. Birthday cake is for birthdays, not every day.

Resolving to become fitter is the domain of those who love to exercise, those who live to sweat, to run, to bend and stretch just because they can. (not me)
Their passion keeps them going, although I have to say if they love to exercise, they are probably already so fit the rest of us look like amorphous blobs.

On the flip side resolving to exercise to improve strength and regain the flexibility you've lost through injury or aging is also attainable if you have a specific goal to work towards.
Passion, again, will help you here.

So maybe the quote is in the right place after all.

Comments

  1. What would I want to change? As I am near enough to perfect, not very much really.

To be serious, I do little with any passion, or I think so. But I do admire those who do.

  2. I will NOT mess with perfection!!

  3. I am really, really going to have to track down Harry Dresden. Thanks for the reminder.
Passion/obsession/interest/involvement. Works in progress here. Which is fine.

  4. Andrew; I don't need to change much either. Eat less of the sweet foods and smaller dinner portions. The rest of me is fine, no change necessary.

fishducky; I won't either, as soon as I attain it. Just need to practise eating less.

Elephant's Child; I'll check my documents and see if I can email them to you. You can read on screen so as to enlarge the font if you need to. One at a time of course, unless you'd prefer to track down the real paper books. I'm going to do that myself, I'd like to have them on my shelf alongside all the Lee Child Jack Reacher series.
