Sunday Selections # 211

Welcome back to Sunday Selections!

This once-a- week-meme was originally begun by Kim of Frog Ponds Rock, as a way to showcase some of the many photos we all take, but don't get around to showing on our blogs.

The rules are very simple:-
1. post photos of your choice, old or new, under the Sunday Selections title
2. link back to me, River, somewhere in your post
3. leave me a comment so that I know you've joined in and can come over and see what you've posted.
4. hop on over to** The Elephant’s Child to see more of her wonderful photos.
  Andrew often joins in too.

**it's possible EC may not participate this week as she has other things going on.

I usually go with a theme for my Sunday Selections and this week I have more on the cutting down of trees.

When I left them last time, I thought we'd seen the last of the destruction, but sadly that was not so. Later in the week, the cherry picker complete with chainsaw wielding person and chipper returned.

all of that blue sky you see here was once a mass of deep green tree tops

here's a closer look :(

this is all that was left. I was going to bring that long branch home for Angel to scratch on, but I couldn't lift it. I brought home a much smaller piece but he doesn't like the new cut smell.

I like the texture of this bark.

a few lonely pine (pining?) needles

this pile of wood shavings was quite large, I think people took them for their gardens

this is the one I dubbed 'lollipop tree' last time.

it still has a support rope, I hope it is just a forgotten rope, not an indication that this tree will come down too.

look at that texture! enlarging the photo will help.

not much left here for the sulphur crested cockatoos :(

let's look at something more cheerful

Angel watching television

a stuffed tiger living in a small tree behind my flat, look, he's wearing a Richmond footy scarf!
(Hobbes? from Calvin & Hobbes fame?)

a slightly bedraggled teddy residing in a higher branch of the same tree. He's been there since before I came and I've been here three and a half years now.

  1. It's a pleasure the teddies remain in the trees and no fool of a teenager or such has shinnied up to take them down. Can't say the same for the trees.

  2. How terrific to resident stuffed toys nearby. You should add a couple......ah, but how to get up into the tree. Somehow I don't think the lollipop tree is going to be left there.

  3. Joanne; there aren't any teenagers living here, we're all older people and the teddies can't be seen from the street, so they're safe. Unlike the trees.

Andrew; I can't be adding any of my stuffed monkeys, I love them all too much to leave them out in the weather. Maybe when I'm 80. It's a small tree, about twice my height so I could reach if I wanted. i agree about the lollipop tree, it's too close to that building, so will probably disappear before winter.

  4. Sad to see the trees coming down for sure.

  5. The wanton destruction of those trees is criminal. Surely they could have done some gentle trimming without being so savage?
Love those stuffed animals living in trees. I am surprised how well they have survived a few years of rain, hail and sun. They must be quite well protected by the branches and leaves.
I've noticed Candy watches the TV at times but more if there is a ball game on. Otherwise she has little interest.

  6. It is a pine tree? Considering the heat lately I'm not surprised they're coming down as they get very brittle and a good strong wind can do a lot of harm.

  7. Wow! Those stuffed toy animals certainly have weathered the weather well!

How sad about the trees. Man is a destructive creature in so many ways.

Have a great week, River...cuddles to Angel. :)

  8. I think that since they went and lopped the once beautiful and green canopy off completely, they should be removing the trunks as well, because it would only be a sad, continual reminder of what once was.
I think Hobbes and Ted are off on their own adventures and return to "rest" in the tree forks at the end of the night :)

  9. Delores; I'm concerned for the sulphur crested cockatoos who used to feed in those trees.

Mimsie; I agree, some trimming to keep branches away from the gutters would have bee a better option.
The tiger teddy is new, but the brown one has been there for years and still looks in pretty good condition.
Angel watches random stuff on TV but never more than a few seconds before he's off again.

JahTeh; they're all pine trees or some sort of conifer and they don't look at all brittle to me, the logs and trunks look very solid and they're heavy too, I tried to lift one.

Lee; the tiger teddy is new, but the brown one certainly has lasted well.
The trees were a great source of food for the sulphur crested cockatoos and I'm sorry to see them go because now the birds won't be back.
I gave Angel a big hug, I scooped him up and held him close for a second and when I let him go I got the strangest look, like he was saying what was THAT for?? :)

Vicki; most of the trunks have been removed and they'll be back for the rest when their schedule allows I suppose.
I like the idea of Hobbes and Ted going off on adventures :)
