Sunday Selections # 216

Welcome back to Sunday Selections!

This once-a- week-meme was originally begun by Kim of Frog Ponds Rock, as a way to showcase some of the many photos we all take, but don't get around to showing on our blogs.

The rules are very simple:-
1. post photos of your choice, old or new, under the Sunday Selections title
2. link back to me, River, somewhere in your post
3. leave me a comment so that I know you've joined in and can come over and see what you've posted.
4. hop on over to The Elephant’s Child to see more of her wonderful photos.
  Andrew often joins in too.

I usually go with a theme for my Sunday Selections and this week I'm back in my garden.

when I had the grasses removed, I found my cheery little welcome gnome again. I'd placed him near the front corner of that garden and he was very quickly lost under the grasses as they grew. I cleaned him up and now he stands on the porch table by my door.

I collected seed heads from the french marigolds in the garden and put a couple of dozen in the empty pots that had once held bulbs. Here you can see three lovely healthy plants developing. Buds, but no flowers yet.

in the other pot, only one seed grew and has now flowered beautifully. I put more seeds in there and about eight of them have now sprouted the first two leaves. So more flowers are on the way.

out in the garden the rest continue to flower and I am still collecting seed heads.
I've filled half an envelope with seeds now and will start them in pots at the first sign of spring.

I like the colour mix available in the dwarf French marigolds.

red, gold and ruffled. What more could you want?

pretty maids all in a row.

see the chewed petals? That caterpillar must have had a sweet appetiser before he moved on to my mint.

I've since been to the garden centre at Bunnings and bought more marigolds, there's a lovely red and yellow striped one, but I haven't photographed it yet.

the mint is beginning to recover, but I've bought another plant and put it in the same pot.
Hopefully the caterpillars won't find it until it is better established.

Now, for fishducky, a couple of my favourite T-shirts.

well of course it is!

this one speaks for itself. (*~*)

  1. I like you gnome. I'm partial to garden whimsy, too.

  2. Wow on the marigold front. They look wonderful. Soooo cheery.
I also really like that second t-shirt. It is often (very often) true here. Of both of us.

  3. Your garden looks beautiful with bright colored flowers...

  4. I am not a gardener, but that doesn't mean that I don't appreciate what hard work you put in to make your garden SO beautiful. As for the t-shirts, I hope you wear them with pride!!

  5. Your gnome is very cheery looking and I love the last tee shirt.

  6. I think I might get one of those T-shirts for myself...the last one pictured! :)

I hope you and Angel (cuddle to the big A from me) have a great week, River. :)

  7. Gorgeous pics. :) My favourite marigold is the first one. I probably should plant some of these. :)

  8. I like your cheery little gnome. My daughter has quite a few of them in her yard.

Love the marigolds. too. I have them in our garden every year, but not everyone likes them. Like my sister-in-law. When we still lived up north, she came over to weed my garden for me while I was at work. She was trying to be helpful, because I was pregnant at the time. Well, she pulled out all my marigolds! Said she didn't like the way they smelled...

  9. Joanne; my mum had a large collection of gnomes and I didn't like them then, so refused when she offered to give me some. :( I don't have many of my own, I have other things. This little fellow is only 5 inches high.

Elephant's Child; cheery is the look I'm going for, so I'm glad it's working. Can you believe I had someone ask me the other day what the t-shirt meant? She didn't 'get' it.

Weekend-Windup; thank you and welcome to drifting.

fishducky; the hard work is the original planting. After that I leave things to self seed and reproduce by themselves. i choose hardy stuff as much as possible, because I'm a lazy gardener. I wear everything with pride, even my tattered old jean shorts which really should go in the bin, but they're so comfy.

Andrew; he is a happy little chappy. I love my shirt too.

Lee; t-shirt available form Think Geek. Angel has had lots of cuddles this week.

Snoskred; head off to your nursery toot sweet.

Susan; the gnome was a hard rubbish find years ago. He comes in two parts, his top is semi hollow and sits on a spring embedded in the bottom half, so he wobbles in a strong wind.
Not liking the way flowers smell is no excuse for pulling out your marigolds. (*~*)

  10. Love the welcome gnome. Nice to greet one on your doorstep.
The marigolds are doing well and such lovely colours. I must really think about more colour in our garden. We have plenty out back with the shrubs but the front garden is mainly green.
Like those t-shirts too, especially the second.
My spinning light has not worked for months now. I may get Phil to take it down to check it but can't really think what would go wrong. Perhaps just a faulty battery. Is yours still working well?

  11. Mimsie; I just checked and my spinner is still working. They don't have batteries, they are solar powered. Perhaps the ball has dropped from its connection to the solar panel. Have Phil take it down and check, the glue holding them together is cheap stuff and has been known to fail. I glued my ball back with contact glue (KS Bond) when it dropped and later did the same for my daughter's. Hers is also still working.
My marigolds are the Dwarf French variety. They come in the double colours I have here, also plain yellow and plain orange.

    1. Mine at least did have a battery. A rechargable battery. It failed, I replaced it, and it works like a charm.

    1. So is mine. It still has a battery, which is charged each day by the sun.
