Wednesday' Words on a Friday

On Wednesdays, Delores, from Under The Porch Light, has a word challenge meme which she calls “Words for Wednesday”.

She puts up a selection of six words which we then use in a short story, or a poem.

I’m hopeless at poetry so I always do a story.

It’s a fun challenge…why not join in?

This week's words are:

1. spasm
2. meatloaf
3. raspberry wine
4. clinging
5. serpentine
6. indulgent

and:

"under sheets of pristine white, the sleeping spring awaits"

Here is my story:

Chapter One:

Helen knew she was being self indulgent, but she was beyond caring. This was her day, her dinner party.
A spasm of pure joy shook her body.

Everything was coming together nicely. Invitations had been sent last month and accepted. Three couples were expected at 7.30pm tonight.
A cleaning crew had been through the house yesterday and every room sparkled. The menu had been planned to the last detail.

The main course was fairly plain fare, unheard of in dinner party circles, but Helen knew her meatloaf and gravy were the best in town and it was winter after all. Rib warming foods were to be expected.

Her "piece de resistance" was her dessert. In the refrigerator resided a long platter with small mounds of vanilla creamed rice in an intricate pattern with a serpentine river of raspberry wine jelly snaking around them.

Helen had asked her grandmother  Jean for a bottle of her home made raspberry wine, and used delicate leaves of gelatin to transform it into jelly. When the jelly was just at setting point, it had been carefully poured along the canyons formed by the mounds of vanilla rice and now awaited only a final decoration of green angelica leaves.

Helen smiled at herself in the mirror. The deep blue, silk gown clinging to her generous curves was a perfect match for the sapphire earrings Dan had given her for their last anniversary.

She hurried downstairs when the doorbell rang; that would be Julie, hired for the evening to help with the serving.

Chapter Two: what? You thought I was going to write chapter two here? Ha Ha.

  1. So now we're all waiting to hear about the triumph that would be the evening and you've cut us off....mean....just mean.

  2. I am glad that she doesn't have a cooking crew to go with her cleaning crew - and like her priorites. Cooking is much more fun.
    Another great story. Thank you.

  4. Fantastic fare!! A really great human story and I too am hoping that the ring on the doorbell doesn't mean problems for her. Looking forward to Chapter 2.

  5. Delores; Mean? Me?

    fishducky; (*~*)

Elephant's Child; no cooking crew for Helen, she loves to cook.

Merle; nothing has gone wrong just yet.

Mimsie; ah yes, chapter two, where things unexpected happen.

  6. I haven't worked that out yet. Perhaps it's just a group of friends who have dinner parties at their homes in turn. Once a month or so.

  7. Seeing as everything was going smoothly thus far, I'm wondering how the evening will turn out. Perhaps a spilled dish or a dissentious guest who says the wrong thing or the hired help being less than helpful or... simply an enjoyable night had by all.
But, I have a feeling nothing will be that simple.

  9. Vicki; nothing so ordinary as a spoiled dish, no no no, and the helper, Julie is delightful.

Red Nomad OZ; did I put a punch line in there? I think what happens next might surprise you.
