Wednesday's Words on a Friday

On Wednesdays, Delores, from Under The Porch Light, has a word challenge meme which she calls “Words for Wednesday”.

She puts up a selection of six words which we then use in a short story, or a poem.

I’m hopeless at poetry so I always do a story.

It’s a fun challenge…why not join in?

This week's words are:

1. wardrobe
2. infallible
3. chaise
4. prolonged
5. inclined
6. picnic

there is also a music video clip which I am totally ignoring this week.

Here is my story:
Chapter four, which focuses on Jimmy's mother, Molly.

Molly Raven stood in the doorway of Jimmy's room and wondered where to start. Perhaps the wardrobe? Everything in the room was suited for a single man not often at home. The room itself was small and at six feet one inch, with his dad's broad shoulders, Jimmy had well and truly outgrown it. He had chosen this room for himself as a child, because the wide window overlooked the mountain in one direction and the river in the other.

Molly was going to move all his things as a surprise for Jimmy, into the new much larger bedroom with walk-in robe and ensuite extension that had recently been completed.

Jimmy had let Molly know that his stay with Isabel and Carlos was to be prolonged. He would stay a few weeks in case Rosa came home. Molly remembered the look on his face and how his eyes warmed each time he spoke of Rosa. Even though it had been several years since the two had seen each other, they had stayed in touch and Molly was inclined to believe Jimmy was very much in love.

She imagined him leaving Carlos and Isabel, going to be with Rosa if she decided to stay longer in Australia.
She thought of the photo Jimmy had shown her, a smiling young woman with serious eyes, the photo tattered around the edges from being looked at so often.

Navigating a relationship where both partners travelled the world, whether together or separately, would be no picnic, but Molly's faith in Jimmy was infallible. The boy had grown to be a man so much like his father had been.

Molly sat on the small chaise under the window and thought for a while about Jake Raven, her first and only love. She had fallen in love with a pair of warm, laughing eyes, then deeper in love as she grew to know the man behind those eyes.
So many years now, since the avalanche that had taken Jake's life. He had been on his way to check the supplies in one of the mountain rescue huts; Jimmy had been eight years old then.

Molly gave herself a mental shake-up and waked towards the wardrobe. She took the jackets and anoraks from it and hung them out to air while she transferred other items to a box to be carried to the new suite, built with windows wide enough to also overlook the mountain and river Jimmy loved so much.
The new furniture had been delivered yesterday and Molly had given each item a thorough polishing, then hung new curtains at the windows.

When Jimmy brought his Rosa home to meet her, Molly wanted everything to be ready for them. She strongly suspected Jimmy would bring home a bride, not just a friend.

  4. Delores; thank you.

Lee; we'll have to wait and see what next week's words bring. might be an entirely different story.

Elephant's Child; i hope so too. I think there needs to be some adventure along the way though.

  5. Oooh, this is so exciting and I can't wait to see if the love Jimmy has for Rosa is fully returned. What a delightful romance...and maybe a promise of an adventure lined up for us as well?

  6. Mimsie; Rosa loves Jimmy just as much as he loves her. I'm not sure I can write adventure, but I have plenty of notebooks, all blank, so I can scribble ideas until something gels.

  7. I hope there is a sequel about Jimmy and Rosa.

  8. Susan Kane; I hope so too. I have an idea or two, but they're very vague so far.

  10. Barbara; I'm working on more of this story, but slowly. I have to let the ideas come to me. I'll be letting you all know how the health goes as I find things out myself.
