Wednesday's Words on a Friday

On Wednesdays, Elephant’sChild, puts up a selection of six (or twelve) words which she calls “Words for Wednesday”.

She has taken over this meme from Delores, who is retiring from the blogging world.

Elephant's Child has now requested assistance to keep this meme going; perhaps others would like to take a turn putting up the word selection?

I have offered to do July. Is anyone keen to put up the words for August?

We then choose to use these words in a short story, or a poem.
I’m hopeless at poetry so I always do a story.

It’s a fun challenge…why not join in?

This week's words are:

1. choke
2. respect
3. smash
4. airplane
5. royal
6. spring

and/or:

1. good
2. eye
3. burly
4. alarm
5. stick
6. rebel

Here is my story:

I'd always been a bit of a rebel, so when 'World Power' suddenly began issuing daily royal blue pills in the spring of 2957, I decided not to take them.
We were all supposed to be getting our entire calorie allowance from the red and yellow pills, why would we need a blue pill?
I watched with alarm as everyone around me swallowed these extra pills each morning without so much as a "why?" or a "what is in it?", much less "why do we need this?"

It was Spring when these pills first began appearing through the 'food' chutes and by Summer I noticed they had increased greatly in size. People now had to smash them up to get them down, or choke trying to swallow them whole.

By Autumn, the 'World Power' airplane had flown over twice, dropping leaflets explaining how important it was for the populace to respect the edicts of 'World Power' who had nothing but their best interests at heart.

I wasn't convinced. My good eye had noticed that while everyone was busy scrambling to catch their leaflets, no one but me and the burly man who carried a sturdy walking stick, could see the tiny flash of a camera lens as 'World Power' took photographs.

We had nodded to each other a few times, sensing a kindred spirit, but not wanting to draw attention to ourselves. Those who "stood out" as being different, somehow just weren't there the next time people shuffled out of their multi-story highrises for the allotted "sunshine in the garden" time.

  1. Were the blue pills actually Soylent Green?

  2. Dark. And probably true. I would definitely be questioning the blue pills. They should be questioned.

  3. Not being a pill-popper of any kind, I'm glad that I won't be around in 2957!

    Well...I don't think I'll be around in 2957!!! :)

  6. fishducky; no, they're something else, but I haven't quite worked out what yet. But they're not good.

Elephant's Child; I hope I'd be a questioner too, not one of the mindless masses.

Lee; in 2957 all the food is in pill form apart from the protein pouches and you probably don't want to know what is in those.

whiteangel; I had the idea for this on Wednesday, then the words supplied took me off on a bit of a tangent.

Barbara; there's definitely more to come.

  7. I'm glad I won't be around to live in a world where daily sustenance comes purely from pills. I enjoy cooking and eating too much. And I sure hope I'd have the good sense to question those "good for you" blue pills, too.

    Another great story, River!

  9. Susan; I'm a big fan of cooking and eating too; so many tastes and textures! A world of pills would be terrible to live in.

  10. This gave me a shiver when I read it ... and I need to know what happens next! Really hope we will not be someday reduced to swallowing only pills - how bad for food bloggers that would be!
River - thanks for taking over W4W in July! - I am letting my readers know, and hoping a few more will join us.
