Sunday Selections # 238

Welcome back to Sunday Selections!

This once-a- week-meme was originally begun by Kim of Frog Ponds Rock, as a way to showcase some of the many photos we all take, but don't get around to showing on our blogs.

The rules are very simple:-
1. post photos of your choice, old or new, under the Sunday Selections title
2. link back to me, River, somewhere in your post
3. leave me a comment so that I know you've joined in and can come over and see what you've posted.
4. hop on over to Elephant’s Child to see more of her wonderful photos.
  Andrew often joins in too.

I usually go with a theme for my Sunday Selections and this week I'm taking you back to our Victoria Square to see......

the new fountain.  If you enlarge the photo, you'll see it better. See those strips with the holes? Under the water.

ta-da! the strips hold smaller water spout holes while the larger ones in the middle might be underwater lights. If I'm right about that, they'll come on in the evening. But I didn't stay around that long.

the water spouts appear to be on a computerised routine, with different strips rising and lowering,

or some strips spouting while others rest.

here's a long view, I'm standing on the 'apron' where the food vans were, the fountain is on a lower level. About a half a metre or so.

this appears to be half the water spouts at once, every few minutes they all go about two metres high. When all the spouts are up, you almost can't see through the water wall.

this is a section of the stepped seating by the fountain. I imagine sitting there and getting sprayed on a hot day would be wonderful.

opposite the fountain are the city flags. The Australian flag on the right...

and the Aboriginal flag on the left. Most of Adelaide was once Aboriginal land. Still is I suppose...nice of them to let us stay.

Here we see Queen Victoria, watching over "her" square.

on the eastern side is another of the seating/shade structures...

with a  nice new toilet block.
But what's that box with the question mark?

let's find out.

it wasn't locked.....so of course I opened it.

this is the message inside the lid. And in the box?

a net bag filled with lawn games!! What fun! Quoits, skittles, ring toss etc

this is the structure on the western side that I showed you last week. Just behind that is the road leading north towards the city, behind the road is another grassed area.

where several hundred pigeons gather. This is just a few of them, they all started walking away when they saw the camera.

  2. This is such a beautiful green space I went through the pictures several times to enjoy the peace of it.

  3. Love that fountain, with its dancing sprays.
The box full of games is a wonderful idea too. I hope they are returned.
A friend, just back from Europe, told me of pianos put out on the street for people to use and enjoy. And she said that she sat and listened to some beautiful playing - and was amazed that the pianos were treated so respectfully. I am pretty certain that here some mindless soul would need to vandalise them...

  4. Camera-shy pigeons! Perhaps they thought the paparazzi had arrived! :)

Water is so relaxing to watch whether it be the ocean, rivers, creeks, lakes, fountains or spouts; not forgetting if in the form of a bath or shower, either. Fountains and spouts as those shown enhance a city hub...unhustles the hustle! :)

I hope you have a hustle, hassle-free week, River. Cuddles to Angel. :)

  5. That's a pretty interesting place, toys for the kids and cool water for the older people.

  6. Hi human, River,

I felt like I was there. Thank you and I reckon I'd be trying to chase those pigeons ;)

    Pawsitive wishes and doggy kisses,

    Penny xx

  7. I suppose this might be a silly question but when I left that was still the place to catch the Glenelg tram - where do you catch that now? ;)

Here is my post this week - Sunday Selections Week 34

  8. This looks like a wonderful place for people-watching, and the box is a fantastic idea!
Unfortunately, things like that wouldn't do well here. Toys, pianos, etc... would be stolen or destroyed before you could say 'snap'.

  9. fishducky; i'm glad you enjoyed it.

Joanne; it's a lovely area, even when bustling with people. It's a pretty large open space, about the size of half a city block, with water, food vans and a games locker, people really enjoy it.

Elephant's Garden; I must get a photo of the old fountain which is at the southern end, behind the Ch7 Restaurant Revolution building.
We've had pianos placed around the city in the past, painted in bright colours, I have a few photos somewhere, I'll see if I can find them.

Lee; I think the pigeons just moved away because I didn't have food for them.
I love watching water. If yesterday is anything to go by, I'm in for a peaceful, relaxing week.

Merle; it's turned out nicer than many were expecting.

Penny; nice to see you here! I've sat and watched as small children chased the pigeons, some of them only just learning to toddle around. Their smiling faces are a joy to see as they follow the birds around.

Snoskred; you can still catch the Glenelg tram there, but the line has been extended now and goes along King William Street around to the Entertainment Centre, so you can catch the tram anywhere from there. It gets very crowded though as travel within the city centre is free, tickets need to be validated only from the Sout Terrace stop onwards, so the tram is filled to overflowing with tourists and Central Market shoppers. There is more than one tram now though, so maybe it isn't so bad as when I used it to get to the swimming pool two summers ago.

Jacquelineand...;the box of games seems to be well respected, it is unlocked mot of the time. I've seen people playing with the gear in the past, but assumed they'd brought their own. Now I know different. It's a great idea. We've had pianos around the city in years past, I'm sure they'll make another appearance this spring, people tend to leave them alone unless they sit to play them. I don't recall any being stolen or vandalised.

  10. I love the water spouts and you've just reminded me that I have a post about a gorgeous fountain floating around in drafts. Of course with all that water spraying about you know what I'd be looking for.

  11. I'm a huge fan of fountains and ponds. Always have been since a wee child. Mesmerising.

I love the sound of large flags flapping and snapping in the breeze.

QV. She whom I was named after.

A box of lawn games for the community? What a great idea!

  12. River, the fountain spouts are ones that stop as you walk into them. Try it next time. Promise they will. Just walk quickly and confidently and they drop just as you think you are going to get wet.

    1. Meant to say, the games box is a great idea. I hope it is not abused.

  13. Nice water feature.
Messy pigeons, but it's good to have them around.

  14. Hi River,

We used to have those fountains in Manchester city centre - in fact, maybe we still do but there is so much rain here we probably never have to use them.

    :o)

    Cheers

  15. What a fantastic place and the toy box is a great idea. I always enjoy anything to do with water and fountains.
One would have to think twice before sitting on that seat with all those pigeons around!!
Thanks once again for sharing part of your city.

  16. JahTeh; luckily there's one really, really close to this particular fountain.

Vicki; I love fountains and ponds etc too, watching water is quite mesmerising. Soothing too.

Andrew; those would be spouts on flat ground? These are sunk into the pond, it's about ankle deep.

whiteangel; people feed the pigeons in that area which seems to be a good idea as it keeps the birds away from the rest of the city.

plasman; it's a shame to have fountains and never use them.

Mimsie; the pigeons seem to stay on the grass, the seat is right beside a bus stop so there are usually people sitting on it.
