Wednesday's Words on a Friday

On Wednesdays, Elephant’s Child, then River, have been putting up a selection of six (or twelve) words which is called “Words for Wednesday”

This meme had been taken over from Delores, who is gradually retiring from the blogging world.
This month the meme continues here, at Randomosity.

Essentially the aim is to encourage us to write.

Each week we are given a choice of prompts: which can be words, phrases, music or an image.   What we do with those prompts is up to us:  a short story, prose, a song, a poem, or treating them with ignore...

Some of us put our creation in comments on the post, and others post on their own blog.  I would really like it if as many people as possible joined into this fun meme.  If you are posting on your own blog - let me know so that I, and other participants, can come along and applaud.

I’m hopeless at poetry so I always do a story.

It’s a fun challenge…why not join in?

This week's words are:

1. dewy

2. whirled
3. vegetarian

4. peas
5. elves

6. hippy

and there is a picture, which I've used after the story.

Here is my story:

For a second year, Sandra was to be one of Santa's elves in the upcoming Christmas Parade.
Two months ago she had tried on her costume from last year and discovered she had become a little too 'hippy' for it. Sandra sighed, thinking of all the home made cakes and biscuits shared at the office morning teas, This was her first job and she hadn't wanted to offend anyone by refusing them.

"Mum was right," she thought. "Once on the lips, forever on the hips," is what she told me. "At least my complexion is still dewy and fresh, the cakes haven't brought out any pimples."

Right then, Sandra had decided to diet. No more biscuits and cakes, her morning tea snacks would be apples or grapes.

And it had worked!
For the first month, Sandra had stuck to her Mum's vegetarian recipes. "Thank goodness I like peas," she'd thought, since most of the recipes included at least half a cup of them. In the second month, small serves of chicken or fish had been added three times a week.

Now, Sandra whirled happily in front of her mirror. Not only did the elf costume fit much better, so did her favourite summer dress!

Sandra's favourite summer dress, redesigned from one of her grandmother's ball gowns, in gold coloured silk, with matching purse.

  1. As usual, I love your story. And admire Sandra's will power. If only it was contagious.

  2. Oh beautifully done River. Like EC, I wish Sandra would share the willpower, lol.

    Magnifico!

  3. Those damn cakes and biscuits!! Why do they treat us so cruelly?

A nice little story, River and a great use of the words. :)

    Have a good weekend.

  4. Elephant's Child; I need to dig deep and find my own will-power. I know it's here somewhere....

Jacquelineand; thank you. I have the feeling Sandra was raised without sweet stuff, so dropping the new habit was relatively easy for her.

Lee; for me it's cakes and ice cream, I swear I can hear the stuff laughing at me as soon as I open the container!

    1. I told the crew at IGA this morning I was going to sue them. They've got Peters Drumsticks on special this week...and I love Peters Drumsticks! How could I resist? I didn't try, naturally! I bought three boxes! lol Don't misunderstand me...I get on well with all the crew at my local Supa IGA store; we all had a laugh. I told them I'd be back for more before the special ends!

Temptations are there to tempt us...and we're here to succumb to the tempations! My philosophy is - I'm going to be dead a long time...much longer than I will have been alive! ;)

    1. On this dewy morning I twirled around
To see the elves in my garden
      Looking at the peas
It made me wonder if they were vegetarian
And just as hippy as me!

      My words put together...

  6. Nice job, as always. Like Sue said, I wish I had some of Sandra's willpower. Too bad willpower isn't covered in chocolate; then I'd have a large serving of it!

  7. Lee; drumsticks are not my thing, you can have my share. i like my icecream in a bowl with a spoon.

whiteangel; thank you, love your poem!

Susan; thank you. covered in chocolate sort of defeats the purpose I think. I have will power, just can't remember where I've put it (*~*)
