Wednesday's Words on a Friday

On Wednesdays, assorted people have been taking monthly turns at putting up a selection of six (or twelve) words which is called “Words for Wednesday”.
We have taken over this meme from Delores, who is gradually retiring from the blogging world.

This month the meme continues here, at the most - - of every moment.

Essentially the aim is to encourage us to write.

Each week we are given a choice of prompts: which can be words, phrases, music or an image.   What we do with those prompts is up to us:  a short story, prose, a song, a poem, or treating them with ignore...

Some of us put our creation in comments on the post, and others post on their own blog.  I would really like it if as many people as possible joined into this fun meme.
If you are posting on your own blog - let us know, via comments, so that I, and other participants, can come along and applaud.
I’m hopeless at poetry so I always do a story.

It’s a fun challenge…why not join in?

This week's words are:
1. classified
2. mustangs
3. honored
4. award
5. tour
6. baked

and/or:

1. plant
2. beds
3. gourmet
4. tapped
5. crossword
6. southern

Here is my story:

Ted breezed in through the door and planted a kiss on the top of his wife's head. "I smell something delicious," he said. "What gourmet offering are we being honored with tonight?"

"I'll tell you if you can give me an word for wild horses, eight letters, there's a 'g' in it," Gloria said as she tapped her pencil on the edge of the crossword book open before her.

"Mustangs" said Ted. "Now what's for dinner?"

"Southern fried chicken with baked potatoes," Gloria replied. "Your mother is in the kitchen right now cooking up a storm.

Ted's face blanched and he backed up a step. "Mum's here? Why? When did she arrive? Did you tell her? Please say you haven't told her. You know how she likes to take over everything."

Gloria soothed him, "Don't worry I haven't breathed a word. Carol is on a book signing tour, she received an award for her latest novel, that fictional comedy called "That's Classified- the FBI exposed"
She's been here almost since you left this morning and made me promise not to phone you. She wants to surprise you."

"I'm surprised alright. Anyway, how are you feeling?" Ted's voice dropped to a whisper. "Any morning sickness today?"
Gloria smiled. "Not even a hint of queasiness," she whispered back, "and I hope it stays away. I want to enjoy your mother's surprise dinner."

Carol had heard them talking and came in from the kitchen. "Teddy! You're finally home. I thought I'd surprise you with your favourite dinner, I made Gloria promise not to call you. Has she told you about the  book signing? My newest novel has really taken off. I should have tried comedy ages ago."

"Mum, how nice to see you, what a surprise," said Ted hugging Carol.

"Carol has asked me to go along with her tomorrow, to the book store, and help with the book signing, of course I can't actually sign anything, but it sounds like fun and I can make sure she takes a break now and again. I was planning to plant out the petunia beds, but that can wait for the weekend."

"Well, sounds like you have the day organised, give me a call around lunchtime and let me know how it's going." Ted turned to Carol, "how's dinner coming along? Gloria said Southern fried chicken, shall I set the table yet?"

  1. Another family I would like to know more about.
You are really good at setting up not only a scene, but one which entices us to know more.

  4. Now that I've put all else aside so I could compose my tale...I'd better post my end result using this week's words....

"Weekend after weekend I BAKED under the heat of the summer sun. My parents and some of my friends constantly berated me, saying I should be CLASSIFIED as being insane, but their words went in one ear and out the other.

My boyfriend, Brent, raced Ford MUSTANGS. He was constantly on TOUR around the race tracks throughout Queensland and the SOUTHERN states. I accompanied him, of course. Why not? I loved the smell of gasoline in the mornings!

I couldn’t understand why everyone was questioning my reasoning and desire to be with him in the hectic motor racing world. It was a no-brainer! To me it was a world filled with heart-thumping excitement. My adrenaline ran wild and free. In some ways, I guess, I did, too!

Brent was about to be HONOURED with an AWARD. I intended to be there to PLANT a kiss or a thousand kisses on his cheeks. I wouldn’t have missed an opportunity like that for the world.

We slept in many different BEDS during the lengthy seasons. Sure, there were times we ate GOURMET foods in the restaurants of fancy hotels. However, in the early days, more often than not we roughed it in cheap motels and take-away joints; not to mention the countless times we literally camped at the tracks, our sleeping bags our only luxuries.

The best part of it all was we shared that special time in our lives, creating unique, wonderful life-long memories.

When Brent was busy on the track and in the pits with his crew I’d keep myself occupied doing a giant cryptic CROSSWORD puzzle. I always had a few stored among my possessions. In an effort to solve the puzzles I TAPPED into my “left-brained” logical, analytical and objective powers, and when they failed me I switched to my “right-brained’ intuitive side. If neither side of my brain was in operational mode I always had a couple of good books with me to read when frustration set in."

  5. Elephant's Child; setting up a scene appears to be my forte. Perhaps I could publish a book of unfinished beginnings and title it Scene Setters; English teachers could use it to have students write essays or something.

Lee; Chapter two is eluding me right now.

fishducky; come on in, we'll set an extra plate.

Lee; true story? remember the days when baking in the sun wasn't seen as a bad thing? Rows of teenagers would be lying on towels along the beach and a radio jingle every half hour would sing out " time to turn so you don't burn" It was fun to watch every towel occupant flip over in unison. Many of them were already red as boiled lobsters :(

    1. No, not a true story, River....it's fictional. However, as I've written in posts when I was a teenager every weekend was spent at the coast...and getting a tan was an important pastime. My friends and I were as brown as berries throughout summer.

Randall and I first started dating when he was 19 and I was 18 (before he headed off to New York for 10 years), we often did go to watch motor racing at a well-known race track in those days called "Lakeside"...and it was there that we did see the first Ford Mustang race...and that particular days was very exciting for us and all the other spectators, most of whom went especially to watch the Mustang; but, no, I never dated a motor-racing driver! :)

Good to see you're back on line. :)

    2. When I added mustang to the list of words, I wasn't thinking about the car! I love how words can be used so differently - great story!

  6. I'm in again this week! What a wonderful story, and family and a perfect use for each word! They were a bit tricky for me, trying to make some sense of them with the photos I wanted to share! Here's my link

  7. RIver, I am curious how long Gloria and Ted will be able to keep their surprise a secret! I also hope you write more - and I love the way you used the word mustang!

  8. Karen S; I read your piece, (just now) it's very good.

Susan F; I completely forgot about Gloria and Ted over the weekend (*~*). I'll have to see where next week's words take them. Or me.
