Wednesday's Words on a Friday, appearing on a Saturday because of Christmas Day

On Wednesdays, assorted people have been taking monthly turns at putting up a selection of six (or twelve) words which is called “Words for Wednesday”.

We have taken over this meme from Delores, who had been having computer problems
This month the meme continues here, at Drifting Through Life.

Essentially the aim is to encourage us to write.

Each week we are given a choice of prompts: which can be words, phrases, music or an image.   What we do with those prompts is up to us:  a short story, prose, a song, a poem, or treating them with ignore...

Some of us put our creation in comments on the post, and others post on their own blog.  We would really like it if as many people as possible joined in with this fun meme.
If you are posting on your own blog - let us know so that we can come along and read your masterpiece.
I’m hopeless at poetry so I always do a story.
It’s a fun challenge…why not join in?

This week's words are:

1. brilliant
2. expert
3. healthier
4. radar
5. ecological
6. sneak

and/or:

"living alone and lonely in damp little cottages"

Here is my story:

Lizzie, Fee and me had been together since day one of first grade.
Beautiful Lizzie Townsend, brilliant Fiona Orlando and me, plain Mary Brown.

We had bonded immediately and stood as one throughout infant school, primary school and high school. There'd been a few challenges along the way, but the bond held firm.
Now we were facing University, determining which paths our eventual careers would take.

We weren't worried about Fee at all, she'd be an expert at whatever she chose to do. An ace mathematician, Fee was going to study business accounting, business management and wanted to become an auditor and/or accountant. Knowing her, she'd do both and do them well.

Lizzie was going to study ecological sciences and make the world a healthier place for future generations. She had enrolled already in several classes and was buying notebooks and pencils by the dozen.

Me? I was concerned about a different group of people.

Those who had fallen beyond the radar of modern social services, who seemed to be focused mainly on the working classes, those able to be taxed. I planned to sneak through their ranks as an unnoticed junior social worker and develop a portfolio of the elderly.
The ones who had survived wars and depressions and now barely survived, living alone and lonely in damp little cottages, often ill and /or disabled, without many of the resources available to the rest of the population.
They deserved our respect and help, after all, without them, we wouldn't be here now.

Someone had to fight for them, someone had to speak up and that someone would be me. Mary Brown.

  3. Mary Brown is a shining light...let's hope her light continues to shine brightly over all around her.

    Lovely story, River.

  4. Elephant's Child; there are plenty of Mary Brown's out there, but struggling to be heard. Like one of my daughters often says, there are charities all over the world for the children, but who looks out for the elderly?

fishducky; I love her too, she is a diamond in a sea of pearls.

Lee; I know her light will shine brightly, but will enough people remove their blinkers and see it?
Christmas has been lovely, even Angel has been more cuddly. He is worried a little I think, because the cat I cared for when P goes to hospital is gone. P can't properly care for him now, so her brother has taken Zeya to live with him.

    1. At least, River, P's cat has a home to go too...that warms my heart. Cats pick up on moods...I know my two do. Angel knows something is different, no doubt. He's probably more concerned and caring about you than he is about himself. He will understand when in your care he's in safe hands. :)

    2. Lee; I have told Angel what's been happening, I'm sure he understands.

  6. Three cheers for Mary Brown! A Belated Merry Christmas to you, River. I have been ignoring my computer to focus on my family, but as they are all sleeping in this morning, I am sneaking a few minutes to catch up on your blog posts and stop by to wish you all the best! Happy holidays and Happy New Year!

  7. Barbara; thank you, Merry Christmas to you all too.

Susan F; focusing on family is a very good thing, better to ignore the blog than them. Merry Christmas to all of you, hope it was a good one.
