Wednesday's Words on a Friday

On Wednesdays, assorted people have been taking monthly turns at putting up a selection of six (or twelve) words which is called “Words for Wednesday”.

We have taken over this meme from Delores, who had been having computer problems.
This month the meme continues here, at Riot Kitty’s site.

Essentially the aim is to encourage us to write.

Each week we are given a choice of prompts: which can be words, phrases, music or images.   What we do with those prompts is up to us:  a short story, prose, a song, a poem, or treating them with ignore...

Some of us put our creation in comments on the post, and others post on their own blog.  We would really like it if as many people as possible joined in with this fun meme.
If you are posting on your own blog - let us know so that we can come along and read your masterpiece.
I’m hopeless at poetry so I always do a story.

It’s a fun challenge…why not join in?

This week's words are:

1. Beatles
2. undercover
3. instructions
4. dash cam
5. ticket
6. stories

Here is my story:

"I can't get this thing to sit right!  Stupid dash cam. Where are the instructions?"

"Here, but they haven't magically transformed into proper English, they're still Chinese with pictures."

The screwdriver slipped from his sweaty fingers and he swore.

"Well, that's not going to do you any good," she said. "You should have bought the other model, I would have given you the extra hundred."

"I don't want to be owing you any more money, five hundred is bad enough; I don't know when I'll be able to pay you back."

"I don't care about when. I know you'll pay me back eventually. But you can't start an undercover surveillance business with crappy equipment."

"I should have kept all my Dad's stuff from when he was a security guard," he said. "He didn't have a dash cam, just binoculars and a video camera, still, they would have come in handy."

"Hmmm," she said. "How about a cup of tea? We'll sort something out while we take a break."

"Did I tell you about the time he worked security for the Beatles concert back in '64? He got to shake George Harrisons hand and was given a couple of tickets to the show as part of the payment. He gave one ticket to his sister, my Aunt Helen and the other to his best mate, Stanley. They met at the gates and ended up married. I grew up hearing those stories; for years, the meeting, the concert, the wedding."

"Is that a yes or no on the cup of tea?" she asked.
"Definitely a yes." He wiped off his hands, put the dashcam and screwdrivers in his bag and followed her inside.

  1. A fun story, River; you fitted this week's words in very well.

I was only joking about the spelling in my effort...and I never did pay a neighbour to queue up! ;) Actually, I never did see The Beatles live in concert, but, as I've mentioned previously, I did go to the"Wings over the World" concert when Paul McCartney headed the band "Wings", and Linda was on keyboards and did some back-up singing.

  2. That's a nice story - got all those words in well.

  3. Lee; I thought you were probably joking about the spelling, but I remember a lot of parents back then making a fuss, saying beetles has two "e's" and how can you like that awful jangling noise etc. I wasn't a really big fan, but my sister was and got very upset when Paul McCartney got married.
I liked Wings much better. I used to own the "Black Box" set of Beatles cds, gave it to my son a while ago.

Margaret-whiteangel; thanks. couldn't fit the words to a part three of last weeks story though. I'll have to work on that on my own.

    1. My ex was and still is a much bigger fan of The Beatles than I ever was. They hit the scene when he was still a radio announcer, before he headed off overseas for 10 years. The Beatles, at that time, from 1964 forth certainly did alter the music scene drastically. They kick-started "the British Invasion".

Later during our marriage Randall and I had every album they'd released; as well as LPs by Wings. I was never at a loss of what to buy him! lol

  4. On most occasions while travelling I am able to spot and record on the front and rear dash cams most activity on the road. Initially the said dash cams came from Kogans down in Melbourne without instructions, But having fathomed out the the instruction problem, I am now able to record persons tailgating my vehicle, most of whom are too busy head nodding to Beatles and other distracting music instead of paying attention to driving safely.
Sadly only under cover police driving unmarked vehicles successfully issue a ticket for these driving infringements, but leave the transgressors to relate their feeble stories to the judge or magistrate.

  5. The Mersey Beat; as in Liverpool and River Mersey, Therefore The Mersey Beat as in Beatles, Beetles are six legged crawlies, mind you some crawlies have two legs?.

  6. Vest; thanks for playing along. The words this week were supplied by Riot Kitty, but I'm sure she won't mind this appearing here.

  7. Yes, I received quite a number of your fake adverts, which you mentioned.

  8. Vest; from last year's hacker? Sorry about that. My brother still gets an occasional one.

  9. Hey River! Good for your for slipping all those unrelated words into a lovely narrative that was fun to read. I'm in awe. My "fiction" imagination is challenged these days for sure. Good luck on future challenges! ~Kathy

  10. Kathy Gottberg; thank you. This is a weekly challenge which I'm quite enjoying; it has been going for a couple of years now and my entries are always here on Fridays.
