Wednesday's Words on a Friday

On Wednesdays, assorted people have been taking monthly turns at putting up a selection of words which is called “Words for Wednesday”.

We have taken over this meme from Delores, who had been having computer problems.
This month the meme continues here, with words supplied Olga Gadim.

Essentially the aim is to encourage us to write.

Each week we are given a choice of prompts: which can be words, phrases, music or images.   What we do with those prompts is up to us:  a short story, prose, a song, a poem, or treating them with ignore...

Some of us put our creation in comments on the post, and others post on their own blog.  We would really like it if as many people as possible joined in with this fun meme.
If you are posting on your own blog - let us know so that we can come along and read your masterpiece.
I’m hopeless at poetry so I always do a story.

It’s a fun challenge…why not join in?

This week's words are:

1. exhibition
2. feelings
3. bewitching
4. captive
5. gushing
6. candle

a phrase: "the fog comes on little cat feet"
and we have a picture prompt too, which you will see in my story:

The promise of an art exhibition and sale lured me into the city, a place I rarely go. The work was listed as “impressionistic” by a newly discovered artist.

With mixed feelings I wandered past garish slashes and blobs of colour that meant nothing to me, but held captive many small groups who stood gushing 'ooohs' and 'aaahs' over the “mastery of the brushwork” and the “ moodiness of the colours”.

All the frames held tiny price tags on the bottom left corner and several already had sold stickers also. I shook my head and moved on, thinking perhaps I should have stayed home.

Then I saw it. Over in a shadowed corner and clearly not part of the exhibition, the most bewitching image.

A girl, in a summery Victorian style dress, a little sad of face, a letter held loosely in one hand, gazing at a glazed ceramic ornament; a playful kitty cat.

Here was a painting that told a story!

I leaned forward to look at the price sticker on the frame. The painting would look perfect in the candle-like glow of a soft lamp in my study.

Comments

  1. I really liked this. And could live with this painting - if only the price was within my reach.

    1. Elephant's Child; I couldn't live with this painting, it doesn't suit me at all. I like it, but couldn't have it where I'd see it every day.

  2. A penny candle
    Lit for you
    Captive flame
    Gushing through
    This wintery day.

    (Oh?)

    Maid River
    Bewitching you
    Your exhibition
    Of Irish stew
    Hath lit my heart
    Hath lit my way
    Hath lit my portrait
    Of only you

    As feelings do.

    -Robert.

Yes well sometimes I get a little bit sentimental (nothing to do with the booze) and make a fool of myself. Which comes with the job of course. All poets are fools.

    3. peppylady (Dora); I sometimes have trouble with endings, so I just keep writing and it turns into several chapters.

  5. I especially liked the image and words you had to work with this week, and you (and everybody else) did a terrific job with them. I really love that painting, but alas, I have a feeling the number on its price tag would be way out of my league.

    1. Susan; thank you. I like the painting too, but the cost is irrelevant, since I would never buy it.

  7. So much cheaper to look and remember them for ever as the song goes; "A Pretty girl is like a melody"

  8. Bravo! Especially loved the closing line, "The painting would look perfect in the candle-like glow of a soft lamp in my study."
