Wednesday's Word on a Friday

On Wednesdays, assorted people have been taking monthly turns at putting up a selection of words which is called “Words for Wednesday”.

This month the meme continues here, at Elephant’s Child’s blog, with words supplied by Elephant’s Child in place of Jacqui, who is sadly unable to be with us.

Essentially the aim is to encourage us to write.

Each week we are given a choice of prompts: which can be words, phrases, music or images.   What we do with those prompts is up to us:  a short story, prose, a song, a poem, or treating them with ignore...

Some of us put our creation in comments on the post, and others post on their own blog.  We would really like it if as many people as possible joined in with this fun meme.
If you are posting on your own blog - let us know so that we can come along and read your masterpiece.
It’s a fun challenge…why not join in?

This week's words are:

1. noble
2. shine
3. expressive
4. charm
5. odd
6. biggest

and/or

1. passion
2. actuality
3. top
4. jar
5. elevator
6. angel

Here is my story:

His mother had wanted him to join a more noble profession, be a doctor or a lawyer, but Dave enjoyed his job as a medical examiner. His passion for mystery helped solve some of the biggest murder cases when the local police asked him to examine  the causes of death for several victims.

He had a jar on his desk into which he would put a dollar coin for every case he was unable to solve. The jar was empty.

Every morning he would step into the elevator and descend to the lower ground level where his examining rooms lay.  He would admire the shine on the stainless steel tables, the glint of freshly cleaned instruments, the top quality camera he used to photograph each stage of an autopsy in case photos were needed for a court case.

With his natural charm, expressive eyes and the face of an angel, Dave probably could have been anything else in life. A model perhaps, or a movie star. Maybe the doctor or lawyer his mother had wanted.
His mother had thought it odd that he preferred to spend his days with dead people, but as his career advanced and Dave became well known in forensic science circles, not to mention popular with defence lawyers and the FBI, the actuality of the situation became more acceptable to her.

She began boasting of how smart he was, was a great help he was, how pleased she was that he had chosen this profession.

Comments

  1. It is lovely that he found work he is happy with, and nice that his mother finally accepts his decision. Sad, that it takes other people's approval to make her give hers though.

    1. Elephant's Child; she simply wanted the same bragging rights as most of her family, where the kids had all become doctors or lawyers. And in a way, he is a sort of surgeon, he does cut people up and sew them back together.

  6. Great job River. Loved every word and am so happy that his mother could finally be proud of him. After all it is a necessary job and someone has to do it. Applause, applause, applause

    1. Granny Annie; that's right, someone has to do it. If I'd known about this sort of thing when I was a teenager I might have stayed in school.

  9. Good use of words, were you feeling Ghoulish when you wrote. I suppose some one had to do the job. I cannot understand why anyone would seek such a career. Guts and entrails, seen plenty in a former occupation.

  10. Vest; I often feel ghoulish and I probably would have been okay as a morgue attendant once I got used to the smell. I've worked in an abbatoir, very briefly and a chicken processing factory, even more briefly. The smell is pretty awful in those places.
Some people choose those careers because they see it as giving dignity back to murdered victims.
