Wednesday's Words on a Friday

The original Words for Wednesday was begun by Delores and eventually taken over by a moveable feast of participants when Delores had computer troubles.

The aim of the words is to encourage us to write, a story, a poem, whatever comes to mind.
If you are posting an entry on your own blog, please let us know so we can come along and read it.

This month the words are supplied by Granny Annie and can be found here.

This week's words are:
1. document
2. birthday
3. network
4. removable
5. jungle
6. open

and/or:
1. quote2. holds
3. avoid
4. surrender5. grace
6. living

There is also a rather pretty picture of assorted dry pasta shapes, which I haven't used.

Here is my story:

Grace King,  from the Channel 19 network, holds her microphone closer as I struggle to answer her questions. I'd agreed to be interviewed in order to warn others of the dangers of playing on jungle gyms in the rain.

Cameras were set up in my living room, with huge lamps in the corners, so as to get the best possible light for the upcoming news program.

"May I quote you?" asked Grace. "I have a sheaf of notes here, things you said earlier."
"I don't remember exactly what I said," I replied. "Maybe you could read me some of it"
Grace read from the pages spread on the coffee table.

"I want people to avoid being as stupid as I was. I'm not a kid anymore, I'm eighteen now and I shouldn't have been in the playground in the first place, but I remembered how much fun a jungle gym could be and it wasn't raining hard, just a drizzle really. But I slipped and dropped my document folder with my new resume, my ID, a birthday gift card I'd been planning to spend on my way home from the job interview tomorrow. The whole thing just flew open and stuff went everywhere. I broke my leg and was calling for help; a young man came running and I said to him, please call an ambulance, but he scooped up the folder and everything, then took the purse from my handbag and ran off."

I felt myself going white, then red with embarrassment at what I'd done and what had happened.  "Do you want to use that quote without me being on TV? I know I said, but I'm not comfortable about it now."

Grace said that would probably be alright, but she'd have to check with the network; perhaps they'd agree to just using a photo of me instead.

She reminded me the young man had been caught, he wasn't happy being made to surrender the gift card, turns out he's a repeat offender on home detention. The ankle bracelets aren't supposed to be removable, but he managed to get it off and his mum found it. She'd called the police, so they were already out looking for him.

Grace added "you'll get your things back as soon as the police release them."

    1. S.J.Qualls; ha ha. I totally forgot to write something and only remembered as I was climbing into bed. So I turned the computer back on and bashed this out in about five minutes.

  2. Wow...that was great. Girl, you need to be writing a book.

    1. only slightly confused; writing a book is something I think about, but it means hard work, and I'm not a fan of that.

  3. I love your very different take on the prompts. Most of us went one direction, you went in another. And defeated your new laptop.

    1. Elephant's Child; sometimes I just bash 'em out, like this one, other times I read what others have done and go a different way on purpose. Keeps things interesting. My new laptop is not my friend. But he does the job and that's what's important. I'm reserving praise until I see how he copes with photos.

    1. Susan Kane; thank you. I was thinking jungle would be good to begin with, when I saw the list of words, then I completely forgot to write anything until bedtime. I suppose climbing into bed and back out again brought jungle gym to mind.

    1. Granny Annie; this may turn out to be the same scofflaw who is accusing Remy in the previous stories.
