Wednesday's Words on a Friday

The original Words for Wednesday was begun by Delores and eventually taken over by a moveable feast of participants when Delores had computer troubles.

The aim of the words is to encourage us to write, a story, a poem, whatever comes to mind.
If you are posting an entry on your own blog, please let us know so we can come along and read it.

This month the words are again supplied by Delores and can be found here.

This week's words are:

1. dominant
2. carpet
3. magazine
4. duster
5. finicky
6. display

and/or:

1. carbine
2. boots
3. tactical
4. determination
5. filthy
6. disgusting

and/or "maniacal megalomaniac"

Here is my very short story:

"Look at this magazine picture. See how they've used the dominant colour from the carpet pattern to dictate the rest of the decor? Everything blends in."

"And it looks like a show room in a display house. Totally impersonal. Everything matching and colour co-ordinated is so fifties. No-one does that anymore. Except maybe elderly Grandmas and finicky people"

"So you don't want this sort of thing in our new home?"

"No. I want us to choose individual pieces that we both like, things that speak of who we are. We shouldn't just go out and buy a room full of stuff."

"No?"

"No. Get the main items, a couch or armchairs, something to sit on, something to hold the TV and other things can come in time, when we know what we need. There's just one rule. No boots on the furniture, ever."

"Well, I can see the determination on your face and you're right like you usually are, so let's go couch shopping."

  1. Good job and good advice. I used to want everything to match and never did get there...now I wouldn't thank you for matchy matchy.

    1. only slightly confused; I used to want matching things too, but found out that really only works in enormous rooms where there is plenty of space for individual items as well, to break up the monotony. My home these days is a mish-mash of odd pieces, but I like it.

  2. I like this one River, it sounds like an actual discussion happening right in front of me, well done with the words.

    1. Jimmy; thank you, I think I'm pretty good at discussions. I just write is as I hear them in my head.

  3. Good job, because it could either be the husband or the wife who's dictating the purchases!!

    1. fishducky; wife in this case, although it could have been either.

  4. Sounds like a good plan to me...let one's own personality and tastes be reflected in the room/home; not sterile copy of a showroom!

As always, well done, River. :)

Take care. Best thoughts go your way.

    1. Lee; I prefer rooms/homes that show personality, even if that means odd bits from relatives and secondhand shops mixed in with a new piece or two.
      Thank you for the thoughts.

  5. Yes. An emphatic yes. I do like rooms with personality. And people with personality.
Love your use of the prompts. They took people in such different directions this week.

    1. Elephant's Child; personality is definitely a plus, as a re rooms that look like people actually live in them. Sterile tidiness wouldn't suit at all, like rooms you're afraid to sit down in in case you wrinkle a cover or something. I hate those. Give me rumpled cushions, coffee cups, books etc strewn around, in other words, comfort.

  6. Hey River,

Excellent! Sofa, so good and off to go couch shopping in 3D reality.

    Wishing you a nice weekend.

  7. Good dialogue. I got caught up in the discussion. Now I fear that I may be an elderly grandma, or finicky!

    1. Val; you? finicky? never. You're much too human :)

  8. Thing that match in a house? What a concept! Our house has "personality" out the wazoo. Lots of old stuff and homemade stuff, but not a whole lot of "matching." The only thing I'd disagree with in this discussion is about the boots on the furniture. We've always allowed feet... and animals... on our furniture.

Another great job, girl. Have a super weekend.

  9. Susan; feet, yes, boots, well that is something they'll have to work out. Probably if the boots in question are muddy, they'd have to be left in the mud room. I remember seeing friends houses in the sixties and the "best" rooms, where visitors got seated, were always matching like they'd bought the entire room, furniture and knick-knacks, and curtains, from a store catalogue. They weren't comfortable rooms at all.
I like the sound of your house :)
