Words for Wednesday

The original Words for Wednesday was begun by Delores and eventually taken over by a moveable feast of participants when Delores had computer troubles.

The aim of the words is to encourage us to write. A story, a poem, whatever comes to mind.

If you are posting an entry on your own blog, please let us know so we can come along and read it.

This month the words are supplied by ME!  and can be found right here.

This week's words are:

1. pitiless
2. circumstance
3. coffee
4. black
5. shimmer
6. bottles

and/or:

1. reminded
2. sluice
3. blazing
4. fragment
5. routine
6. compartment

**let the creativity begin!**

  3. It was early. Before six. Sarah was already on her third cup of strong black coffee. A sluice for the foul taste in her mouth and, hopefully, a kick start for her brain. Ordinarily, her normal routine worked well. Her catering business fitted into one compartment, and the family another. She didn't have to fragment her attention or time, but could devote 100 per cent of herself where it was needed.
Today she was being forcibly reminded of the reasons for that rule. Catering for her mother-in-laws 70th birthday was never going to be easy. Finger food for seventy guests AND a celebratory cake to prepare. Flowers. Bottles and bottles of flowers. A different type of bottle for the celebratory toasts. Bunting. There was just sooooo much to do.
Circumstances were conspiring against her. Even this early she had a blazing headache. The shimmering aura in her peripheral vision, and her sensitivity to cooking odours said it wasn't a headache but a pitiless migraine.
She could expect no help or sympathy from the rest of the family. The show must go on...

    3. Elephant's Child; excellent story and I would suggest that Sarah get outside help, since she can't rely on family. I hope the migraine backs off for her.

    4. Terrific use of the words! Poor Sarah. I think most women can relate to this story in some way. Even now, in 2018, too many of us try to "do it all" rather than ask for help.

  4. After a slow, rather late start to my day...here's my effort.

"The events of the past week REMINDED her he really was the PITILESS creature she’d come to believe him to be.

An unexpected, unplanned CIRCUMSTANCE, far removed from his daily ROUTINE proved his lack of worth as a human being. His behaviour was a BLAZING jolt back to reality.

In no uncertain terms, she told him she would get on with life without his help. He was a hindrance, an extra obstruction, she didn’t need.

As she sipped her cup of strong BLACK COFFEE a SHIMMER of soft light fell on the waterway.

Because of the drought the SLUICE gate had been opened to flood the paddocks to enable fresh pastures to grow.

Once the area was covered with grasses the new calves finally could be taken off the BOTTLES. They’d feed on the lush green shoots.

After five years of unrelenting drought only a FRAGMENT of new life, both in stock numbers and in natural feed for the existing cattle existed.

She’d set apart a separate COMPARTMENT in her mind, shutting away her feelings. There was not time to dwell on the drama surrounding her life. To do so would be time wasted."

    1. No matter how you try to shut it away, though, it will come out. Well told.

    3. Lee; Great story, She's definitely better off without him. And the coming work with the young stock etc will help to keep her from brooding on past events. I hope she gets rain soon.

    4. Nice job! Compartmentalizing our feelings away from the things that have to be done is a talent we all need from time to time. She's well rid of him!
