Sunday Selections #557

Image
Long ago, Kim of Frog ponds Rock, (who no longer blogs), dreamed up a meme called Sunday Selections.  A place where those who were willing could put up photos they wanted to share, new, old, good, bad or indifferent, any photos you please.  Nothing rude or vulgar though. And we don't mind at all if overseas bloggers care to join us. The meme is now continued by Elephant's Child and I occasionally join in as do a few others. Andrew is one.  Messymimi is another. Drop in to Elephant's Child and have a look. I have three philodendrons in the blue pots now and lined them up all in a row, I've cleared space to put a concrete base with a large market umbrella for summer shade so things don't get as burnt as last summer. I hope. most of the smaller sun-loving succulents have been moved to the front corner where they can have all the sun they want. some of my black pelargoniums are showing much more red now and I've noticed just yesterday some lower blooms are pink

Wednesday's Words on a Friday

Image
The original Words for Wednesday was begun by Delores and eventually taken over by a moveable feast of participants when Delores had computer troubles. Sadly, Delores has now closed her blog forever due to other problems. The aim of the words is to encourage us to write. A story, a poem, whatever comes to mind. If you are posting an entry on your own blog, please let us know so we can come along to read it and add a few encouraging words. This month the words/prompts are supplied by Elephant's Child and can be found here This week's words/prompts are: 1.he had a chip on his shoulder 2. best thing since sliced bread 3. with a cherry on top 4. she wants to have her cake and eat it too 5. everything but the kitchen sink 6. bringing home the bacon Here is my story: Dad had called a family meeting, insisting that all of us were present. This was serious. Dad only called meetings when something had gone wrong and needed to be fixed, or when making announcements that would involve e

a few wise words from Jimmy Barnes

Most Australians will know of Jimmy Barnes , but overseas readers may not. He is an Australian rock singer, featured here a few weeks ago on a Musical Monday, singing "Driving Wheels" In yesterday's Sunday paper there was an article about the soon to be released  cookbook, written by Jimmy and his wife Jane, titled "Where the River Bends" . Through its "recipes and stories from the table of Jane and Jimmy Barnes," it charts how ethnic food cultures shaped their family feasts. In the article, Jimmy speaks of food and immigration, here are some of  his words: ** "When people start to kick up about immigration and refugees and too many strangers coming to this country, I just say, 'Look at what you are eating'." "Look at what they have brought, the culture and the joy and the richness that food has brought to this country." "Through all those migrant cultures we learned how to cook the great produce we had here. We have a

Anyone know what it is? next to it and a bit swamped are several grevilleas, this one is yellow with a green tint a spidery pink one and this one which resembles the peaches&cream one I tried (and failed) to grow many years ago this ground hugging l

through the screen door

last Thursday I heard a clatter at the water dish, so grabbed the camera and sneaked towards the front door about six feet from where I was standing he looked at me, so knew I was there hesitated a second then took a drink then he jumped right in there! splashed around water splashing over the porch he jumped up onto the edge of the cuttings pot, shook his wings out a bit then jumped right back into the water 😄 you might notice also another crow out on the grass eating the dried mealworms I throw out.  I might see if I can buy live ones locally, don't want to go through Amazon, delivery costs and times are ridiculous now.

My life wasn’t meant to turn out this way. I had dreams. I had plans. Now all I have is this bedroll and the clothes on my back.” He shuffled past the cemetery, noting the preponderance of Stone Angels

I am always surprised by how small a block looks once the house has been demolished and removed. along the front, before the fence went up, is where I rescued the bulbs, tricky work in slippery muddy soil this is the biggest clump and I just could not shift them. I googled later and discovered they are also known as Peruvian Lily and Caribbean Lily and come in white, light blue and the darker blue that these ones are. bright golden wattle, taken a week too late, you m

it's a good day for soup

Last Wednesday I was clattering about in the kitchen, so the girls came in to see what was going on. Meg: I see empty cans, tomato soup and four bean mix Riley: the beans are already strained and rinsed Gillian: over here is a carrot and a quarter cabbage Jordan: and Gracula! Gillian: we love Gracula, we think he's the cutest garlic chopper Meg: the onions, garlic and carrots have softened and now the beans are in the pot, I have to stand well back because the steam is hot and might frazzle my hair. Riley: I want to help stir but I can't reach the spoon Riley: the tomato soup and water mix goes in next we are watching the chopping of the cabbage, the knife is too big for us to help now the cabbage is in and simmering, it is time to wash up the dishes. We love this part because we get to play with the suds Gillian: I got suds in my hair! Jordan: I have suds on my face 😀 Back at the front door, "the rain is really pelting down!" "It's a good day for soup&quo
