Sunday Selections # 407

Welcome back to Sunday Selections.

Begun way back in the mist of time by Kim of Frog Ponds Rock and now continued by me, with a drastic relaxation of rules.

Originally meant for showcasing old photos lost on your files, never seeing the light of day, the meme has morphed into photos of your choice, new or old, good or not-so-good, anything you please, but nothing rude please.

If you are participating, please leave me a comment so I can buzz along and have a look.
Elephant's Child always participates, and her pictures are always worth seeing.

We're inside today, getting a peek at my revamped lounge room:

some of you may remember my TV cabinet. This behemoth took up almost a third of the available living space, remembering my dining/work table is also in this room. This cabinet was extremely heavy and came in three parts that should have been screwed together to make a complete unit. but the floor was crooked, so screws would have pulled loose from the weight not being stabilised or something, so it was never done. impossible too, to remove or replace any of the TV-DVD components, without shifting the whole thing to access the wires and power outlet which was behind the centre section.
Changes had to be made.  All dvds and other ornaments were removed, as you can plainly see.

except for the Witch House right on top as I couldn't lift it down without help, two hands on the house leaves none for the ladder...

this is the replacement, from Ikea. My son joked that Ikea was becoming my second home (*~*)

along with these shelves, 6 individual units, side by side, sized especially for DVDs or CDs. I set the shelves for DVDs.
Notice the gap between the wall and the shelves? They had to be fixed to the wall before I could load in all my DVDs

here they are together, looking good and taking up about half the space of the other one which was on loan from T until I decided what I really wanted.

all the usual suspects are still there

times two, plus a new Christmas snow globe

this now, is my brother's work. He made a template, then cut the bases of all the units to fit over the skirting boards. Pretty clever isn't he? so handy to have a brother who knows how to do pretty much anything and has the tools for it.

one of the  many wall fixings, the whole section is now stabilised, all six units, ready to be filled

ta-da!!
all dvds in, with space for more 😊

here's a drawn back shot with Lola photo-bombing.

Pssst! I forgot it was Saturday and almost went to bed without scheduling this....ssshh! don't tell

  1. This is fabulous! How I miss my brother with all the tools and all the skill to make whatever we wanted. The old cornmudgeon! Make sure that brother takes good care of his health.
I like your set up. Ikea, it is. I just parted with my grandmother's bed, the last big component in my tiny house. Suddenly I see how many things consume far more space than needed to do the job. I gave the bed to one of the handymen of our complex, for his little boy. Win, win, win.

    1. Joanne; I'm glad my brother is still in my city. He's here on a work contract which is due to run out soon, then he goes home to Fremantle. And he doesn't mind helping out, he's family oriented and helps wherever he's needed.

  2. That looks much better. And such good handiwork to make them fit against the wall!

    1. Val; being so tall and narrow, they have to be fixed to the wall so kids or cats can't knock them over. After all my work alphabetising, I wouldn't want to have to do it again unnecessarily. I do like the way they look :)

    1. Author R. Mac Wheeler; you would love my back porch then, where most of my gnomes are housed.

  4. Oh, wow! You must be thrilled to downsize to something that looks so good and works so well. And you have room for MORE DVDs! How cool. Your brother's handiwork to make it fit better is awesome, too.

As much as I like your new IKEA cabinet, I like your Witch House even better. That's adorable!

    1. Susan; room for more dvds was a bonus. I have all the movies and TV series written down and when I counted, I forgot that more than a few are only on usb sticks. I love the Witch House too, I've had it now for quite a few years.

  5. It is looking excellent. Functional AND stylish. Yay you (and your brother).

    1. Elephant's Child; I have a neighbour who thought Ikea had only cheap looking things until I showed her the catalogue and my new furniture. She was surprised that so much from there looks so good. I knew this already since I go there quite often measuring things up. I'm very happy with the way things look here now.

  6. Your new set-up is far more functional; far more attractive, and certainly isn't bulky taking up unnecessary space.

Have yourself a great coming week, River. Cuddles to lovely Lady Lola. I bet she was keeping out of sight when all the activity was going on. :)

    1. Lee; I liked the original cabinet in the beginning, but it did take up too much space and soon ran out of storage. I had dvds in boxes in corners, under the table etc. Lola stayed under the bed until brother left, then she was straight back onto the windowsill.

  7. It looks brilliant. So clean and modern. We too have had to cut bookshelves to fit skirting boards. Otherwise they just sit out from the wall. We didn't use a template though. We just guessed. Not quite as neat as yours. Very important to have such tall things attached to the wall.

    1. Andrew; I knew you'd like it. Cutting to fit skirting boards isn't as easy as it sounds, I know I could never do it. It's important to have things fixed to the wall when a crazy cat decides to run all over and might knock into one unit and send it crashing onto the TV. THAT would be tragic. The TV itself is fixed to the bench with stabilising straps so it can't be knocked over.

  8. Very nice! Clean lines and so much extra space.

When it actually gets to be Sunday over here, i have a few pictures.

    1. messymimi; I like the clean lines and the colour fits in with my black lamp and black dining chair. I'll pop over to your blog a bit later when it is truly Sunday there.

  9. Well now that really looks lovely..making it more modern.

    1. Margaret-whiteangel; I do like a modern look as long as it isn't too modern. Space-age like The Jetsons would be too much. I think what I have now will look good for several decades.

  10. Wow what a difference and you are so lucky to have a brother that can do those jobs for you. You are going to be so much more comfortable now. You have lots of DVDs as did we but I finally sorted through and gave some to our local library. There are some British TV series though that I would never part with plus West Wing which we think is brilliant.
Trust Lola to be there for the photo shoot. Cats sort of know don't they?

    1. Mimsie; Lola usually turns away from the camera, but this time I was behind her. If she'd seen me she would have moved away I think. I do have a lot of dvds, and I also have many movies on usb sticks that I don't have on dvd. The first two units of the six are actually TV series that I like to watch, some are quite old.

  11. I need to follow your example. I have too much heavy furniture.

  12. Very nice. The other was quite imposing. I have a brother like that also. They are priceless.

  13. Looks really good - seems like there's more airiness in the room. And lots of storage!

  14. Ah neat and tidy always looks good and you can find things fhat's always a plus.
