heavy-hearted reading vs. light-hearted cheer-me-ups

I recently read Barbara Kingsolver's "The Poisonwood Bible". It's not the sort of thing I usually read, and while I found it interesting and somewhat educational, I also found myself feeling down and heavy-hearted by the end of the story. So now I'm reading something much lighter and funnier. Janet Evanovich's "Stephanie Plum, Bounty Hunter" series. They have titles such as: One For The Money; Two For The Dough; Lean Mean Thirteen, etc There are eighteen books in the series so far, and I'm currently reading Sizzling Sixteen, with Smokin' Seventeen waiting in line. I haven't yet bought Explosive Eighteen. The main character is Stephanie who works as a bounty hunter tracking down FTA's for her cousin Vinnie who has a bail bonds business, owned by his father Harry the hammer. She blackmailed Vinnie into giving her the job when she was out of work and flat broke. Stephanie's mother would prefer to see her working at the Butt...

just dropping in to say hi..

I'm not staying long, I'm in a hurry to get back to the book I'm reading. Called The Mushroom Man, by Stuart Pawson, I began reading it yesterday. The first chapter didn't really grip my attention, but I kept going in the hope that the story would improve a bit. Well, it certainly did that. I'm up to page 142 and so far there's been three murders, an accidental death, a suicide and a child kidnapping. I was reading this at work this morning, (no, not at the checkout), while I waited for my shift to start and I have to say when it was almost time to go downstairs and start work, I really, really, didn't want to. Yet work I did, for hours, all the while wanting to be reading the story. So, here I am at home, checking email, reading a blog or three.....four...ten.....okay, all of you. I may or may not leave comments, because my book is right there beside me, calling...calling...calling....

page 195 triggered a memory

I'm currently reading The Help , by Kathryn Stockett . It's a story set in Jackson, Mississippi, 1962, "where black maids raise white children, but aren't trusted not to steal the silver.." told from the viewpoint of several maids of the time, secretly, to a white woman wanting to write a book. The book has been made into a movie, which I'm looking forward to seeing. It's an interesting story, almost un-put-down-able, and page 195 stirred a memory deep in my mind. On that page I read that a " Medgar Evers " had been shot in the back, in his own driveway and died with his wife and children crying and holding him. I was sure I'd seen that already in a movie, one that I had a copy of on my own shelf. I searched, found and started watching  "The Ghosts of Mississippi", starring Alec Baldwin and Whoopi Goldberg. Sure enough it's the story of the shooting of Medgar Evers , the trial (where no-one was convicted), t...

One Big Damn Puzzler, by John Harding. One of my daughters lent this to one of my sons, and after reading this blurb on the back, I knew I didn't want to wait for him to finish reading it before I could. So I bought my own copy. It's funny, sad, and the last few chapters are quite moving. But not in the way you'd expect. And that's all I'm going to say. If you want to know more, you're going to have to read the book yourself.
