Thursday Thoughts #3

I don't watch much television because it's all "reality" shows or cooking shows or singing shows. For heavens sake, we've had Australia's Got Talent, Australian Idol, American Idol, The X Factor, The Voice (and now we have The Voice Kids), Britain's Got Talent, and there's sport . Football, Cricket, Tennis, Golf, Rugby Olympics, Winter Olympics, Tour De France, Tour Downunder etc etc etc. News? Meh, it's mostly bad, with a full twenty minutes of advertising to take our minds off it. So I'll turn to my large collection of old movies and TV series and choose something to watch. Series? No problem. I'll go through those alphabetically, I'm currently up to E and I'm watching Eureka.  Movies? Well, I'll choose something randomly and enjoy watching, then within a week, sometimes the very next day, that same movie will be shown on television!!  In place of something else that was supposed to be showing. We all know I've b...

Mary, Mary, quite contrary, how does your garden grow?

We've been having some fabulous weather here for about a week now, warm sunshine, cool breezes, blue skies with puffs and streaks of clouds. So of course I've been out and about instead of loitering by the screen here. It's very tiring standing around at bus stops just to get somewhere, but when that somewhere is a nursery and I'm buying seedlings, it's worth it. I got home from the expedition, watered the seedlings in their little tray, then fell asleep on the couch. I've just finished planting them out.... see those little mounds of green? Here's a closer look... nice and leafy. A couple of them already have tiny flower buds... that blurry green bit near the top left of the plant is a flower head forming. It swayed in the breeze just as I had it in focus. and what did I plant? one dozen of these, Erigerons, spaced out along the edge of the path. Tiny little seaside daises. These do very well in Adelaide, I see them everywher...

Sunday Selections #95

Welcome back to Sunday Selections! This once-a- week-meme was originally begun by Kim of Frog Ponds Rock, as a way to showcase some of the many photos we all take, but don't get around to showing on our blogs. The rules are very simple:- 1. post photos of your choice, old or new, under the Sunday Selections title 2. link back to me, River , somewhere in your post 3. leave me a comment so that I know you've joined in and can come over and see what you've posted. I usually go with a theme for my Sunday Selections and this week I'm continuing with some photos of the gardens surrounding these flats I live in. This week, the garden directly in front of and to the right of my flat. From this photo you can't really tell how big that tree (shrub) is. Easily 4 metres wide and 3-4 metres tall. Here we are a little closer.  It's a Fejoia. And it's flowering!! Every red spot you see there is a flower. There are so many flowers. Mmmm, frui...

Welcome back to Sunday Selections! Begun almost two years ago by Kim of Frog Ponds Rock, as a way to showcase photos that you may have forgotten were in your files. Now continued by me, River and The Elephant's Child.  New photos are also acceptable. The rules are very simple:- 1. post photos under the Sunday Selections title 2. link back to me somewhere in your post 3. leave me a comment so that I know you've joined us, and we can hop over to see what you've posted. I usually have a theme to my Sunday Selections and this week I have more photos of the gardens surrounding the flats I live in. Three potted Cyclamens for Andrew, who sadly had to part with his own Cyclamen recently. Daisies for everyone! Have you ever looked closely at a daisy centre? Enlarge that last one and see the tiny rings of flowerets within the larger petals.  Another one of the rose beds , this one is now in full bloom.  One of many paths bordered by flowe...

Sunday Selections #91

Welcome back to Sunday Selections! Sunday Selections was begun by Kim of Frog Ponds Rock as a way to showcase old photos that have never been seen. It's moved away from that a little bit as I sometimes show much newer photos. The rules are very simple: 1. post photos of your choice under the Sunday Selections title 2. link back to me, River, somewhere in your post 3. leave me a comment so that I know you've joined in. This week, I have photos of the gardens here that I took last week. "they're ba-a-a-a-ck"  (name that movie) The roses that is. A while ago, (not on a Sunday), I showed the rose bushes in their winter mode . Bare branches as far as the eyes could see. Today, just a few short weeks later, everything is coming up roses! Remember this? And this? Well, look at them now! all colours, all sizes, from one end of the complex to the other, the gardens here are ablaze with flowers of a...

Welcome back to Sunday Selections! Originally begun by Kim at Frog Ponds Rock , now continued by me as a way to show off photos that might otherwise never see the light of day. The rules are very simple and few. 1.post photos of your choice under the Sunday Selections title. 2. Link back to me, River 3. Leave me a comment so that I know you've joined us. This week I'm going to show you one of the many homes I've lived in since coming back to Adelaide. This house is no longer there, a huge block of flats stands in its place. Looking down the side of the house we rented to the shed/garage. The garage was kept locked and was off limits to us as the landlord still had stuff in there.  Behind the house and garage is a huge garden block, with the best growing soil I have ever known. In this shot I am standing against the back fence, in what was the chook yard, looking down the path to the back door.  That little black rectangle in the centre of the photo is ...
