Sunday Selections #738
Long ago, Kim of Frog Ponds Rock, (who no longer blogs), dreamed up a meme called Sunday Selections.
A place where those who were willing could put up photos they wanted to share, new, old, good, bad or indifferent, any photos you please.
Nothing rude or vulgar though.
And we don't mind at all if other bloggers care to join us.
The meme is now continued by Elephant's Child and I join in as do a few others. Andrew is one. Messymimi is another. Drop in to their blogs and have a look.
Wisewebwoman has also been joining us more often.
Beginning today with the calendar page for May:
I am not one of those people who can't live without coffee, but the first cup of the day sure is nice.
At a recent birthday gathering one woman brought along a "sandwich cake" covered in cream cheese and decorated with cucumber, radishes and edible flowers,
with the inside layers being wholemeal bread, grated carrot, cucumber, hard boiled egg and prosciutto along with more cream cheese.
I took a lemon ricotta cake which I have never made before, but tasted recently while I stayed with my daughter after the second cataract operation and wouldn't go home without the recipe. Mine didn't turn out quite as good, but practise makes perfect and I shall try again soon. It was still yummy.
The birthday "girl" is now 89.
walking to my latest eye checkup I noticed some wattle still blooming or newly blooming, it's hard to tell, some wattles bloom in spring, and some whenever they want to.
Roses are still everywhere
here's a closeup of that pink, the inner layers fit with Charlotte's colour of the month for May, "pretty flower pink"
here's a yellow one.
Umbrellas supporting Ukraine? Maybe it was intentional, maybe not, but I was happy to see them.
it's normal to see a shopping trolley (cart) out and about on the street, but I think they are taking liberties when they bring the family along 😉
Both cakes look pretty and tasty.
ReplyDeleteDidn't you know that shopping trolleys reproduce as swiftly as rabbits?
jabblog; at last! I kept getting a message to sign in with google. The cakes were tasty, other women also brought cakes, so the birthday "girl" has plenty of leftovers. Shopping trolleys do seem to reproduce if no one is looking and sometimes they take themselves on journeys around the blocks and down onto train tracks....
DeleteLove the sandwich cake- a somewhat healthier option.
ReplyDeleteanyway it looks beautiful!
Linda Sue; it is a healthier option and was made because many of the attendees on the day had given up sugar for various reasons.
DeleteLove those roses.
ReplyDeleteThe sandwich cake is an interesting variation and I am sure that your lemon ricotta cake was delicious.
Elephant's Child; the roses are brightening up my days as those are in my view from my front window. The sandwich cake was interesting, I had only a small slice in case I didn't like it, I'd never had one before. My lemon ricotta was delicious, but it has sugar so others took slivers rather than slices. It seems I am the only left in the group who still has sugar, though I have cut back a LOT.
DeleteHappy Birthday to the birthday girl! And I think I would choose a piece of your lemon ricotta cake. It sounds so good. Maybe you could share the recipe in a post?
ReplyDeleteMMM; I'll tell the birthday girl everyone here says Happy Birthday, she'll be pleased, though doesn't really understand what a blog is, she is 89 now and still has a landline phone and many many books to keep her occupied during her days, along with three or four cats. You could probably find several versions of the recipe by googling, then choose the one that suits you best.
DeleteI cannot live without an espresso, twice a day, for survival as much as pleasure. So the calendar page is spot on.
ReplyDeletehels; I have never had an espresso, which many people still call expresso. I drink cheap instant coffee with milk and sugar just like my parents did. We kids were raised with sugar in almost everything. My own children were not.
DeleteVery wise, River :) My uncle, a dentist, forbad sugar from birth for all his children, nieces and nephews. He must have known a lot for 19550.
Deletehels; dentists have long known the damage sugar does and my kids all have excellent teeth.
DeleteA sandwich cake, what a fascinating idea! I'd like to try making one. Yours sounds good, too.
ReplyDeleteThe flowers are most beautiful.
Trolleys wandering away from their stores are a big concern for the stores. One reason Carl has such a hard time at his is the trolleys/shopping carts are always being taken. People fuss at the workers for not having enough, and some of them are the same people who take them and then "forget" to bring them back.
messymimi; the sandwich cake was quite nice. Trolleys here are the same, the supermarket is within walking distance so people walk there and then roll their groceries home, then leave the trolley on the footpath. Next time they go to the shop, instead of taking the footpath trolley and using it, they simply bring home another trolley! They're so lazy.
DeleteIngo just had such a coffee cause he did not want to wake me he did not use his pro-machine.
ReplyDeleteAck!!! I am still on April! Calendar-page tomorrow then!
That cake!!!! Want!!! Once a friend brought sweet-muffins and for me Pizza muffins. Nice others are as thoughtful and that cake looks so yummy! Clever.
Hungry now and weird-me had a sweet-attack yesterday and got apple cake. Sadly attack was over too soon...
Your lemon ricotta sounds interesting, too! And the surface looks so nice!
"... whenever they want to..." LOL. Glad I waited with planting, only 8C now.
Support whenever you can. If just by heart!
LOL on the trolley-family. Here they are all connected and you need a Euro to get one. And that is too cheap still, you find lonely ones here and there, too.
Iris; Ingo was thoughtful to let you sleep. You can make such a cake yourself, with bread of your choice and fillings of your choice. I remember mum making apple strudel and dad made apple cake, just plain cake with sliced apples on top and brushed with melted butter and sprinkled with sugar before baking. We have a few shops where you need a coin or token to get a trolley, Aldi is one, but most now are free, so people roll their groceries home and just leave the trolley.
DeleteThe apple cake will likely go to the bin. Near to no apples, just sweet. LOL, A Perth-friend, when ALDI came to Australia, complained big. You have to have a bag, pack yourself and the trolley needs a coin. Two mails on that.
DeleteThat cake looks terrific! What an idea. The roses are wonderful to see.
ReplyDeleteJenn Jilks; I've seen similar cakes online, but this is the first real one. There are many variations, but most seem to use cream cheese as a butter and frosting substitute.
DeleteThe sandwich cake is an interesting idea, but I think I'd prefer a sandwich! I choose to believe the Ukraine umbrellas were intentional.
ReplyDeleteSteve Reed; I'd prefer a sandwich too, but this was for a birthday. We had to eat slices with a fork. I choose to believe the same with the umbrellas.
Deletelemon ricotta cake sounds nice. Trolleys on the loose was a problem here too, but now we have deposit on trolleys. It has mostly solved the problem. The deposit is big enough that if somone leaves a troeely after shopping, someone else will bring it back.
ReplyDeletePretty flowers, and thanks for finding my colour.
Charlotte; the lemon ricotta was very nice and you can probably find versions of it online with recipes. We have had deposits on trolleys in the past, usually by inserting a coin or token to release the trolley, then you get it back when you link the trolley back into the line. Your colour is everywhere right now with all the roses having their autumn blooming.
DeleteWhat lovely photos! I love the roses. Tee hee, those shopping trollies. Guess what, I've always called them "buggies" but everyone says "shopping carts" now. I'm old! LOL
ReplyDeleteKay G; those trolleys have different names all over the world I think, but mostly I hear trolley or cart. I have never heard them call buggies before. Our roses are doing well right now in their autumn (fall) blooming.
DeleteCatching up myself after a week (or more) off! Cataracts are done!! Well done. I made a Lemon Ricotta and pear cake at a friend's place recently that was divine!
ReplyDeletejeanie; I am loving the better vision now. Lemon ricotta and pear sounds nice.
DeleteI bet the roses smell lovely.
ReplyDeleteDora; no they don't, they are mostly hybrids with no fragrance. Only a few of the rose bushes around here have fragrance.
Deletenice eclectic mix of pics - the cakes look pretty good!!
ReplyDeleteArcticFox; thank you, the cakes were all very nice.
DeleteLove the roses, and the cakes both look very good! Happy Birthday to the birthday girl!
ReplyDeleteLinda's Relaxing Lair; thank you, the roses are pretty this time of year, springtime blooms are too often quickly sunburnt, but these autumn ones last longer. The cakes were yummy.
DeleteThat layer cake is something else. I love it. And yes, the roses, still waiting for ours (Spring just arrived here).
ReplyDeleteXO
WWW
WWW; that layer cake was difinitely something else, and very pretty too. Our roses are in their autumn flush.
