Oz Comic Con - Adelaide 2012

I first heard about Comic Con via The Big Bang Theory; Sheldon, Leonard, Howard and Raj go to this event every year.
I had no idea this was an actual real event....

When I read in my local paper that Comic Con was coming to Australia for the first time, I decided I'd go.
Particularly when I read that TV stars from some of my favourite shows were also going to be there.
Sean Astin from Lord of the Rings;
Gigi Edgley from Farscape;
Ben Browder also from Farscape;
Jewel Staite from Firefly and Stargate Atlantis....
and others.

There were to be autograph signing opportunities at specific times, and photo with your star opportunities at specific times.
Other events were also programmed.

Entrance fee for Comic Con was $20, tickets to wait in line for an autographed photo were $30, tickets to wait in line for a photo of yourself with a star were $40.

(Entrance tickets can be bought online and when I saw how long the line was I wished I'd done that.)

Oz Comic Con is going to Melbourne towards the end of June, if you want to go, I'd suggest buying your tickets online so that you can get straight in without waiting in line to buy tickets.

I climbed the stairs to the auditorium and took this photo from the observation window in the waiting lounge. You can see that Comic Con is lots of stalls selling different things, comics of course....

Games....

Movie artefacts..... (if that's the right word)
The Hogwarts stand was a little too pricey for me, if I decide to go again next year, I'll be taking more money, that's for sure.

T-shirts.... (different stalls had different types and different prices)

...and plush toys like Yoda here....

and Mario. (hop you little plumber, hop, hop.  (Sheldon))

There were people in costume....

I tapped this fellow on the shoulder and asked him what he was dressed as; he did tell me, but I've forgotten. (should have written it down!)

A Storm Trooper  (?) and someone dressed in green....with elf ears.

Elf Man again with Elf partner...I don't know who they're meant to be or which movie they're from.

There was a Storm Trooper standing in a plexiglass booth with an open side for people to step in with him and get a photo taken by their friends or by an assistant.
I handed my camera to a nearby assistant....

and stepped in with the Storm Trooper.

"Dr. Who" and "Captain Jack Harkness" (Torchwood) were there, just stepping away from the TARDIS,
so while they were gone.....

I thought I'd take a quick trip through time.

You're probably wondering if I had a photo taken with the star of my choice?
Well, yes.
Yes I did.

Jewel Staite.

She was taller than I expected, maybe she was wearing really high heels, I didn't check. Jewel played Kaylee in the short-lived TV series Firefly, followed by the movie Serenity, and seemed geniunely pleased when I told her I'd loved the show and that Kaylee had been my favourite character.
The photos are A4 sized, they're ready a few hours after the photo sessions and get laid out in plastic sleeves on long trestle tables while the crowd is held back by security guards and plastic chains, when they've all been laid out, people file through and pick out their own.
My photo was right at the edge of a table, so I didn't have to follow the shuffle through, I could just reach over and take it like several other people did with theirs.

It was a great Sunday.

  1. Sounds like a blast...too bad the Big Bang guys weren't there.

  2. Comic/movie/hero heaven. Great pictures. Thanks for the tour.

  3. Lucky you:) I was so sad not to make it to this. Jewel is so gorgeous and is way tall! Love the pic of you and the stormtrooper. That's one for the pool room;)

This comic con is not affiliated at all with the American ones. It's still great to have something like this visit though:)

  4. Those prices are absurd. Robbery.

Jewel looks okay but for forty bucks I'd be wanting a lot more than a photo.

  5. That would be Link, from the Legend of Zelda games.
Also? I would have DIED AND GONE TO HEAVEN standing next to the TARDIS.

  6. Delores; if the Big Bang team had been there I would have gone on both days with half my bank account for photos and autographs and to sit in on the talk segments.

Joanne; I'm not a comic or games person and really didn't know what a lot of the stalls represented, but it was still fun to walk around and see people dressed as their favourite characters. Getting a photo was a bonus, I didn't know the timing of the photo shoots until I read the program as I walked in. Seeing the photo shoot for Jewel was almost immediately I took the advantage.

Sarah; It was quite crowded and once I'd seen everything I was ready to leave. If not for waiting until 3pm for the photo, I would have left. If I go again, I'll take more money so I can wander around and choose things to put in grandkids christmas stockings and a thing or two for myself of course.

R.H. don't be bursting my bubble here. $40 does seem like a lot, but weighed up against the excitement of meeting a star I really like and having proof that I'd met her, plus a souvenir that I'll have forever, I'd say the $40 was worth it.

Toni; Link? Do you mean the person in green with the elf ears? Because I think the red-costumed person was from Star Wars. I really am clueless about most of these things. I haven't even seen all of the Star Wars movies, although I have seen all of Stargate.

  7. It looks like you had a really lovely day.

  8. Hi River,

Sounds like fun. Being a sci-fi loving geek myself I might have been tempted.

I've been to a Dr Who exhibition in Manchester and a Star Trek Experience in Las Vegas - but not met any famous people though.

I'll have to look out for one in the UK.

I will not dress up as a Klingon though.

    :-)

    Cheers

  9. EC; it was a nice day, but I think it would have been better if I'd had someone to share it with me. "no-one" was planning to go, but got sick the day before.

Plasman; this is the first time I've ever been to something like this, but I don't think I'll ever do the dressing up thing. I'll leave that for those who are entering the costume parade.
What would you be if not a Klingon?

  10. Girls having fun with their toys. Noice.

  11. Well if it's worth it to you, fair enough.

  12. I also loved Kaylee in Firefly but I'd pay more than $40 for being next to Nathon Fillion.

  13. Andrew; fun is good however it comes.

R.h. the photo and actually speaking with Jewel are worth every cent.

JahTeh; Captain Tightpants? Sadly, he wasn't there. But there were t-shirts with Nathan in Firefly costume, I'll email you a photo of one. If I'd known you were such a Nathan Fillion fan, I'd have bought you a t-shirt, so you could hang it on your wall and see Captain Tightpants every day.

  14. Thanks for the head up! My husband loves Firefly & Serenity too. He'll be jealous if I show him your pic.
