so frustrating, but getting there

Here I am on a brand new laptop, Asus VivoBook, slightly bigger than the last one, which still works, but given it's new habit of turning itself off suddenly and messages that the battery could no longer hold a charge, I bit the bullet and bought this one today (Thursday).

I made my fair share of mistakes trying to get things going and almost gave up a couple of times with thoughts of taking the whole shebang to K, but I've made it this far, so all is good. All I have to do now is load all my files that I have stored on an external hard drive and add my favourite blogs as I read them.

I'm sure I'll be very happy with this once I get used to it, but nothing will ever be as pretty as my little pearly white Toshiba.
The biggest difference here is all the ports are on one side, on the Toshiba there are ports on both sides. This means I'll have to rearrange my table to get more space on my left, but that can wait for now.

  1. I love new tech toys! I got a new laptop about 6 weeks ago to replace my iPad Air which I had already replaced with an iPad mini - Smart lady to have an back-up external drive, so many folks get caught out when they don't have one. I have the back-up on my desktop iMac and all my other devices are MAC's so I can sync them all - which is so cool.

    1. Grace; new toys are great as long as we are savvy enough to get them up and running easily. In the past I've had K to help me out, but this time I was determined to do it myself if I could. There were a few text messages back and forth until I realised one particular mistake that I'd repeated a couple of times. I've had external back-up since my first computer crash in 2003.

  2. Ooooh....new toys. What fun. I'm still struggling along with my old laptop but I'm well aware that time is running out.

    1. only slightly confused; I hoped my pretty little Toshiba would live forever, but it wasn't to be :( Turning herself off was getting to be a big problem, also she'd slowed down considerably. This new one is bigger, so the screen is easier on the eyes and I'm already used to it.

  3. I'm not one for new tech things. Even Windows updates throw me sometimes. We bought a new battery for our daughter's computer when it stopped holding charge. At $99 for the battery, it was probably a better idea to get an updated computer. I guess that's the built in obsolescence.

    1. Tracy; my old laptop was already on its second battery which was never as effective as the original anyway. Updates drive me batty sometimes, especially when they come several times a week. For a while in early June, everytime I wanted to shut down, my option was to update and restart or update and shut down, for almost every day in the week. I found it very annoying.

    1. Kathy G; change is hard, I'm not a fan of change and always try to hold onto the old, but one I dive into the new, I usually wonder why I waited so long.

    1. Val; I don't know about loving it, but I am happy with it. I didn't give it a name, there wasn't an option to "name this device" like on my last one, which was entirely separate from using my own name as the "user" for logging on.

  7. good that you bought a new one. it is surprising how the location of ports can change your life.

    1. Andrew; I took advantage of the EOFYS sales, but paid a bit more than I wanted to, although still under my upper limit. What I don't like about the ports being all on one side is they are so close together and I often have a hard drive and a flash drive plugged in at the same time. I miss having a dvd tray, but not many laptops have them anymore, not even gaming laptops, since most people download their games.

    1. joeh; the whole process wasn't too bad at all, (under three hours including downloading a new version of Office,) once I realised a mistake I'd been making during set-up. Once that's done everything else is just as it was, still with Windows 10, so all is familiar, just have to get used to the bigger keyboard with the numerical keyboard off to the right, where my previous laptop had the numbers across the top.

    1. Merle; yours just has to last until the grandkids are a couple of years older, then they can probably set up a new one for you. Kids these days seem to be born with that type of knowledge. Or just ask at the local school for someone to help.

    1. messymimi; getting used to a bigger keyboard is what I'm up against now and it isn't too bad, I used to have one tis size before I bought the smaller Toshiba that I loved for so long. Everything else is the same, I have the same operating system. I just need to reload all my files and photos, although I'm thinking of just leaving them on the back-up hard drive to access when/if I need them.

    1. Joanne; it's turned out surprisingly easy, these days they're like smart TVs, turn them on and they do most of the set-up work themselves. I had it up and running in under three hours.

    1. Arkansas Patti; I've found the thing to do is get a new one before the old one is completely dead, then you have time to sort the new, while still having internet access via the old.

    1. jenny_o; the new models are so easy, everything is ready to go as soon as you get through the initial set up and that's a lot easier than it used to be. The instructions are very clear. It helps that it has the same version of Windows that I'm now used to.

  18. I have a great guy who does all the transferring, blah blah and charges me so little. Everything I have is backed up automatically on a cloud service which only charges something like $5/mo which is a great relief. I am not too crazy about this all-in-one I have. Great big screen but the ports are so inaccessible at the back and in darkness to compound the problem. Both sides are the best.
Interestingly, I never had good luck with Toshibas. I had 2 in a row and should have learned my lesson.

    1. Wisewebwoman; I've had several other devices over the years that were Toshiba and they were all great products. I usually transfer all my documents and photos to an external hard drive and I can put them all back onto this new laptop, but I find instead I've been a bit picky about what to put on and what to just leave on the backup. I don't like that cloud thing, but it came in handy when getting my bought songs back onto the new I-tunes version that I downloaded.

  19. Let's hope that this new computer will last you a long time. The transition to a new computer is always troublesome, it's a bit like moving. Until you find out where they put your crates, and put the things back where and how you like them, it's frustrating to say the least. Good luck moving in!
