Wednesday's Words on a Friday

The original Words for Wednesday was begun by Delores and eventually taken over by a moveable feast of participants when Delores had computer troubles.

The aim of the words is to encourage us to write. A story, a poem, whatever comes to mind.

If you are posting an entry on your own blog, please let us know so we can come along and read it.

This month the words are supplied by Elephant's Child and can be found here.

This week's words are:

1. lever
2. poison
3. fragrance
4. between
5. immediate
6. oven

and/or:

1. sunshine
2. feathers
3. rotten
4. dubious
5. becoming
6. hard

Here is my story:

“Pull the lever immediately to activate the exhaust fan! We’ll send the poisonous fumes into deep space,” said Annette. “Kyle, get the strong cleanser and a bucket of hot water, start cleaning that rotten muck from around the oven and between the cabinets. I knew trying to melt feathers was a dubious idea, whatever made you think of it? And why did you go ahead when I said not to?”

Kyle said, “Elaine and Suzette got a spell from Hudson, said if we did it right we could become ravens and fly, just by thinking about it. So we could stay people and be birds when we wanted to get somewhere fast.”

“But it turned out too hard, we don’t know exactly where we went wrong,” said Vivian.

“You’d think being in a spaceship was flying enough, wouldn’t you?” said David, rolling his eyes.

Elaine said, “we wanted to still be able to fly when we got back, spread our wings in the sunshine and drift along on the breezes.”

“I can see how that would seem appealing,” said Annette, as she began scrubbing the blackened pot.

“Here’s the air freshener,” said Morgan. “The can says Vanilla fragrance, but it smells like caramel fudge, so that should be better than melted feathers and whatever else was in that pot when it spewed everywhere.”

  1. Caramel fudge is a MUCH better smell than melted feathers. This is a delightful take on the prompts, and I am very happy to see it a day earlier than usual.
How is your cough? Better I hope. Much better.

    1. Elephant's Child; I was inspired by my own air freshener which is labelled vanilla and smells like caramel fudge. The cough? Like British Paints, it keeps on keeping on :(

  2. Yikes, melted feathers. Sadly I can almost smell them. Kind of glad I don't have a Kyle to deal with.
Really creative use of the words.

    1. Arkansas Patti; I don't even know if feathers can melt, but I imagine they wouldn't smell nice. Kyle is a little headstrong, but he'll grow out of that.

  3. Venturing a bit into the sci-fi realm, are ya? Great use of the words. I don't use air fresheners, but if there were one that smelled like caramel fudge, I might be tempted. (Then again, I'd probably gain weight just by smelling it!)

    1. Susan; I like a trip to outer space now and again. There is an air freshener that smells like caramel fudge, I have it here, don't use it often, but it's delicious when I do.

  4. Great take on this, I love a bit of sci-fi and yuck to those melted feathers. I have often fantasized about flying like a bird.

    1. Wisewebwoman; I don't think much about flying, it would be lovely to soar among the clouds, but I tend to think more of being able to live underwater and swim like a dolphin.

  5. It seems unfair that cleaning must even be done in a spaceship. All the advancements, but nothing to replace old-fashioned elbow grease!

    1. Val; regular cleaning is probably taken care of by a vacuum system, but an exploded pot of witchiness needs a mop and bucket just like here on earth.

  6. Yes, you would think a space ship would be enough flying, but some kids want it all. Fun story!

    1. messymimi; being in a spaceship would be enough for me, I enjoy flying in a plane too, apart from the lack of leg room and not being able to walk around.
