Wednesday's Words on a Friday

The original Words for Wednesday was begun by Delores and eventually taken over by a moveable feast of participants when Delores had computer troubles.

The aim of the words is to encourage us to write. A story, a poem, whatever comes to mind.

If you are posting an entry on your own blog, please let us know so we can come along and read it.

This month the words are supplied by Elephant's Child and can be found here.

This week's words are:

two phrases:

1. Bitten off more than he can chew
2. diamond in the rough

and these words:

1. welcome
2. trigger
3. moving
4. taller
5. essential
6. expecting

Alex sat in the chair opposite his psychologist and said, "I feel taller somehow, different, as though I can hold my head up now, instead of hiding away."
"What do you think has triggered that?" she asked.
"The moving," said Alex. "Definitely the moving. I was expecting things to be different, but to be made to feel welcome by so many of my new neighbours is a big part of it. I realise now how essential it is for people around me to be nice. Living where I was, where most nights were a free-for-all brawl amongst neighbours had really got me down."
"I'm glad I could help," said Dr Rosemary. "The letter I wrote to the Director of Public Housing certainly had a speedy effect. With the way he got things running at first I thought maybe he'd bitten off more than he can chew, there were so many others involved almost immediately, but he seems to have been a diamond in the rough, because it's all worked out so well."
"I hear the principal troublemakers back there in those high rise flats are also being moved and to separate areas," said Alex.

    1. Wisewebwoman, I wrote this wishing I was Alex and could move away from some of the goings-on around here.

  2. Very good! You took that in a different direction than I anticipated upon reading the words. I assumed it would involve a new couple getting their first house.

    1. Val, that scenario didn't even occur to me.

  3. I am so glad that you have your new laptop and were able to post.
Love this story, and wish that we have a Director of Public Housing like that one.

    1. Elephant's Child; I published this on the old laptop, incase I had trouble setting this one up, but I got it done faster than expected, so the old girl is set aside now. The Director of Housing is a dream come true, albeit fictional.

  4. Those troublemakers deserve a quick move, maybe floors and floors away.

    1. Susan Kane; there are troublemakers here that I wish could be sent far, far away.

  5. Can't imagine the stress of his former living arrangements. You slipped in those phrases nicely.

    1. Arkansas Patti; thank you. Sometimes living stress creeps up un-noticed until you are way down in the slump. Often it takes an outsider to spot it and get help.

  6. Well told, River....your use of the words was excellent. :)

  7. What a nice ending! It reminds me of how teachers have to separate the troublemakers in a classroom.

    1. messymimi; I thought of that too, remembering one of my daughters was bullied in a new school and the counsellor said she knew the bullies quite well and this was the last straw. While we were there in her office she paged the teacher and had them separated into different classrooms immediately.

  9. Excellent use of the prompts. I felt lighter in mind and body with your Alex.

  10. Oh, if only all unpleasant living conditions could be resolved so easily. Too many people get trapped in areas with no ready escape hatch.

Nice use of the words! And congrats on your new laptop! Have a super weekend.
