Words for Wednesday

The original Words for Wednesday was begun by Delores and eventually taken over by a moveable feast of participants when Delores had computer troubles. Sadly, Delores has now closed her blog forever due to other problems. The aim of the words is to encourage us to write. A story, a poem, whatever comes to mind. If you are posting an entry on your own blog, please let us know so we can come along to read it and add a few encouraging words. This month the words/prompts are supplied by Wisewebwoman and can be found here This week's words/prompts are: 1.larch  2.trifle  3.multiple  4.poteen (Irish Moonshine I think) and/or: 1.surprise  2.quiche  3.flag  4.crossword use either list or both, or mix and match, just have fun. My own story will appear on this blog on Friday 2nd January

Sunday Selections #772

Image
Long ago, Kim of Frog Ponds Rock, (who no longer blogs), dreamed up a meme called Sunday Selections.  A place where those who were willing could put up photos they wanted to share, new, old, good, bad or indifferent, any photos you please.  Nothing rude or vulgar though. And we don't mind at all if other bloggers care to join us. In memory of Elephant's Child, the meme is now continued by myself and a few others. Andrew is one.  Messymimi is another. Drop in to their blogs and have a look. Wisewebwoman has also been joining us occasionally. a week after the Sydney Bondi Beach tragedy this beautiful Mandala was drawn on our Brighton beach here in Adelaide. on the same day "no-one" saw this very bright mini rainbow and I saw jet streams across the clouds. a bee busily harvesting from this rose a very stark tree shadow... and these pole shadows both made me think of Steve Reed , currently holidaying in Florida I was boiling water for something and saw all the tiny b...

Beginning today with the redheads who are missing a sister: ponytail Jordan : "She's been gone over two weeks now." striped top Riley : "She didn't say where, just that we would get a surprise when she came back." frilly Gillian : "I miss her so much." There's been a little decorating here, and there. and look! A little house. At last I own a house! Ha Ha. Here's a cheeky elf hanging off my ...

The Coconut Song

Image
last week a poetry meme had coconut as the theme. Like several others I immediately though of this song I remembered from childhood/teen years and here are the lyrics as I remember them: I hope the video plays. Down at an English Fair, one evening I was there, when I heard a Showman  shouting underneath the square I’ve got a lovely bunch of coconuts, there they are all standing in a row, Big ones small ones some as big as your head Give ‘em a twist, a flick of the wrist, that’s what the Showman said I’ve got a lovely bunch of coconuts, every ball you throw will make me rich, There stands me wife, the Idol of me life, singing roll or bowl a ball a penny a pitch Roll or bowl a ball a penny a pitch, roll or bowl a ball a penny a pitch, Roll or bowl a ball, roll or bowl a ball Singing roll or bowl a ball a penny a pitch (Instrumental solo) I’ve got a lovely bunch of coconuts (they’re lovely) There they are all standing in a row (one two three four) Big one...

My country has picked up a few "Americanisms" over the years

beginning with "cowboy' movies and small boys getting cowboy outfits complete with toy guns for Christmas or birthday gifts.  Foods soon followed with movie theatres selling giant buckets of salted buttered hot popcorn along with giant buckets of "soda" aka soft drinks. Speech has also become somewhat Americanised. There are other examples, but just yesterday I saw the very worst kind of copying. Right here in my own largely peaceful, accepting country, A Hannukah Festival on Bondi Beach in Sydney, New South Wales, was ruined by hateful thugs with guns randomly shooting into the crowd, injuring and killing bfore they were apprehended.  I believe one of the offenders also died.  These peaceful people celebrating the way they have done for years, were attacked because they and their festival were/are Jewish.  WHY???? What the heck is so wrong with being Jewish that others feel the need to wipe them from the Earth?  I don't get it. I JUST DON'T GET IT.  ...
