Sunday Selections #750
Long ago, Kim of Frog Ponds Rock, (who no longer blogs), dreamed up a meme called Sunday Selections.
A place where those who were willing could put up photos they wanted to share, new, old, good, bad or indifferent, any photos you please.
Nothing rude or vulgar though.
And we don't mind at all if other bloggers care to join us.
The meme is now continued by Elephant's Child and I join in as do a few others. Andrew is one. Messymimi is another. Drop in to their blogs and have a look.
Wisewebwoman has also been joining us occasionally.
* Elephant's Child may or may not be participating
Beginning today with a photo from "no-one"
a cheeky "Galah", one of our cockatoo family, these are quite large birds only a little smaller than the sulphur crested cockatoos and used to be often kept as pets in large cages. My mother had several, along with the sulphur crested ones, in ginormous cages with plenty of room for them to fly. They can be taught to talk and become quite tame if handled gently.
Keeping them as pets is now ILLEGAL and has been for several decades.
this is what the "ink cap" mushrooms looked like a few days later, now there is nothing left of them at all.
these next few photos are the cyclamens grown in pots by neighbour P, who once gave me cuttings of the "black" pelargonium.
pink with more raindrops, it had stopped raining just as I got off the bus to walk through the gardens here to my home
The Arkaba Hotel on the corner of Fullarton and Glen Osmond Roads has planted a couple of rows of Strelitzia, aka Bird of paradise.
they are beautiful plants but will grow to be far too large and will hang over the footpath unless they are kept trimmed
finishing with another photo from "no-one" this was our sky last Thursday morning, she sent the photo to my phone and on there it is much more deeply coloured, almost fiery. The white dot is a street lamp.
The galah is very pretty. You have shown a lovely selection of cyclamens - their leaves are so pretty. Strelitzias are very striking but I've never grown one. I don't think they grow outside here, though they can go outside for a summer holiday.
ReplyDeletejabblog; galahs are pretty but also noisy and messy, seeing flocks of them in the parklands is a sight, but usually we see flocks of Corellas, similar birds but white with a blue ring around the eyes. Strelitzias do well here and like all plants of that nature send out babies from the roots, much like "hen and chickens", if left to themselves Strelitzias can grow to be enormous bushes easily six feet high and wide.
DeleteAbsolutely gorgeous photos. Thank you 😊 so much for sharing.
ReplyDeleteLinda's Relaxing Lair; you are very welcome.
Deletethe crimson cyclamen is really nice..... and the birds of paradise look great.... we obviously don't see them very often over here.... or galahs for that matter!! thanks for showing us.
ReplyDeleteArcticFox; P has cyclamens in all shades of pink, the crimson is lovely and he has a red too but that photo didn't come out well. We see far fewer galahs these days, I don't know where they all are, but maybe they will be around more in the spring and summer.
DeleteFantastic photos, once again so fun to see the plants I know as delicate indoor plants, cyclamen and strelizia, being described as prone to grow too large if not pruned ;)
ReplyDeleteCharlotte; it seems funny to me to hear these plants described as delicate. Many older gardens have old Strelitzias that were planted years ago and are now gigantic shrubs, easily six feet tall and wide. Cyclamen do well in pots but also under shade trees where some sunlight also gets through, although I do think pots are better. They don't like full sun.
DeletePretty Bird
ReplyDeleteDora; yes, also noisy and messy when in large groups.
DeleteYour cyclamen look very healthy and happy.
ReplyDeleteWe had the same spectacular sunrise on Thursday morning but I decided to just watch it change rather than rush for my phone. I know from the past, a camera struggles to catch the true deep colours.
Andrew; P's cyclamen are always healthy, he has the perfect low sun medium shade spot for his pots. That sunrise was fabulous wasn't it! I missed it by sleeping late as I often do in colder weather. These are all phone photos. I rarely take the camera out of its case these days. "no-one" showed me how to email my photos from the phone to my laptop, so easy. She installed/downloaded something to make that happen and I have no idea what, but I'm grateful.
DeleteWonderful photos of the world around you River and it is very beautiful.
ReplyDeleteThe sky at this time is fantastic!!
Katerinas Blog; thank you.
DeleteLove the Galah, we used to have one many years ago and yes, in a very big cage.
ReplyDeleteThe cyclamen are looking lovely, like the crimson one, gorgeous colours.
Good selection R.
Margaret D; we had a galah when I was very young, it would roam around the yard and on sunny days we often found him asleep on the dog who was also asleep with our cat curled up with him. Mum's galahs and sulphur crested cockatoos learned to imitate her calling the kids to come and finish their chores. Cyclamen are one of my favourites.
DeleteIn Lamington NP 1995 one such huge (tame) bird took place on Ingo´s shoulder - I was glad it wasn´t mine, gosh so huge! But friendly!
ReplyDeleteHehe, piggy here says hi, no idea what´s in there. In my old apartment everyone visiting put some money in. I moved 2008.... Ever since it was left hungry, as far as I know..
Your winter is so much more beautiful than our "summer".
17C, and grey, rain on the way - and me, too, walking to the Flixbus.
Those Birds of paradise look wonderful! WOW on the last pic! From Germany in grey again, ahhh, thank you! Sure made me smile big.
Iris; they are friendly and tame after being fed for a few months, they get used to humans very quickly. I remember having one on my shoulder, the claws are very sharp.
DeleteThe little piggies here are empty too, there are more of them under another tree, just there for kids to see and be happy.
We have 14C today and 8C overnight, brrr, cold!
Birds of Paradise? ...perfect
ReplyDeletehels; perfect with enough space to grow fully, but the bed they are in is quite narrow, they will hang over the footpath and obstruct pedestrians.
DeleteThat galah is a beautiful bird. Is it also illegal to keep the sulphur-crested cockatoos?
ReplyDeleteSteve Reed; yes it is Illegal now to keep most native Australian birds and animals as pets. Budgerigars are still allowed.
DeleteLove the bird. I only see birds like that when I am on my travels (or in a zoo).
ReplyDelete:o)
Cheers
PM
Plasman; or online.
DeleteThe morning sky picture is beautiful! It certainly looks fiery to me. I don't know anything about plants, but love the pictures with the raindrops on them. The Bird of Paradise display looks well-tended, so hopefully they will be trimmed if they invade the footpath.
ReplyDeleteVal; it was a very fiery morning, but so cold later on. Raindrops on flowers are always pretty. The bord of Paradise , all of them, are new young plants so they look nice for now, but once they grow they will quickly become crowded, they have put too many in those narrow beds. I can only hope they get properly cared for.
DeleteLots of color today. Nice!
ReplyDeleteMike; thank you.
