Sunday Selections # 744

Long ago, Kim of Frog Ponds Rock, (who no longer blogs), dreamed up a meme called Sunday Selections.

A place where those who were willing could put up photos they wanted to share, new, old, good, bad or indifferent, any photos you please.

Nothing rude or vulgar though.

And we don't mind at all if other bloggers care to join us.

The meme is now continued by Elephant's Child and I join in as do a few others. Andrew is one.  Messymimi is another. Drop in to their blogs and have a look.

Wisewebwoman has also been joining us occasionally.

Starting today with a little drainage problem, yes, another one but not the bathroom this time,

but the kitchen sink would randomly spit up water from its drain, other times filling itself with soapy water also coming up through the drain. It would reach the top, then slowly drain away over about twenty minutes. On a Thursday I eventually called a plumber who said he'd be there Tuesday.
Meanwhile:

the problem got worse with water now not draining, but running across the draining board,

onto the bench and under the microwave,

dripping down to the floor and the lower shelf inside that cabinet also got wet with paper labels on things becoming saturated and peeling away.
I ran (ha ha) upstairs and dragged my neighbour down to my kitchen to show her  what is happening every time she empties her sink and suggested neither of us uses our sinks until after the plumber has been.

I tried washing up in the bathroom basin, but there is very liitle space on either side

so the drainer had to sit on the floor (bending and stretching is good for you, right? and why does my saucepan look brown? It's burgundy)

the next day I switched to a large plastic bowl which I filled from the boiled kettle and then carried into the bathroom to empty it into the laundry tub once I was finished. That worked a lot better.

Tuesday, as promised, the Viking  plumber arrived, seven feet tall and seven feet wide with a very gentle face and voice. He began trying to unblock my sink with a plunger thingy but that didn't work, so he got that metal "snake", uncapped the end of the outside pipe (see where it disappears under the building? awkward) and set the machine running.

See that river of black sludge? I wasn't quick enough to get a photo before he started hosing it all away, looked and smelled like thick motor oil, after it was drained from a well-used motor.

That dried mucky grey/black patch is where it landed in the garden right under the open drain, from there it went across and down the path.

in better news, the jades are flowering,

my plum trees have lost all their leaves,

while a different tree further down is already budding! Spring is months away!

"no-one" sent me this photo of the Wednesday full moon still in the sky as she left for work Thursday morning.

later in the day she sent me this "Grumpy face" cloud formation.

Comments

  1. Ugh! Drains! I hope it's all sorted now and you don't have any more problems.
The grumpy face clouds are wonderful - great capture.

    1. jabblog; I hope so too, but as long as idiots keep putting the wrong things down the drains, the problems will recur. Hopefully not soon.

  2. Oh that is terrible - our bathroom plumbing can be a bit temperamental and I don't know that the original builders did things quite by the book, but at least I don't have to worry about neighbours adding to that conundrum. Glad that it got sorted.

    1. jeanie; I hope your builders did the right thing, is there any way to check? Get a plumber to look at the system and make sure? I'm glad you don't have neighbours contributing.

  3. This is awful! I cannot stand when this happens. Your sky and cloud photos are lovely!

    1. Linda's Relaxing Lair; it is awful when it happens, but I've been here almost 14 years and all has been fine until this year. The best part is when things get fixed and all is well for a while. The sky and cloud were taken by my daughter who goes by "no-one"

  4. Love the photos no-one sent you. It seems that your neighbours still haven't learnt what should and shouldn't go down the drain.
We have budding trees here too. Weird.

    1. Elephant's Child; I wish I knew which neighbours, but if someone is pouring things into the outside gully trap it could be anyone, even someone who doesn't live here. Budding trees must have their calendars mixed up.

  5. that sink episode looks like something that would happen to me..... i remember in this property that when the washing machine went on, the water would bubble up through the garden path - collapsed drain as it turns out

    1. ArcticFox; at least your problem was outside. We had a collapsed outside drain too, a storm water drain, so the downpipes got clogged with dirt and tree roots and didn't drain, instead the upstairs neighbour got her back porch balcony flooded and it got so deep it lapped into her flat, ankle deep. I helped her bail out as much as we could until plumbers arrived, they "solved" the blocked downpipe by cutting it so the water could flow through and it did, right into my back porch!

  6. I am so sorry for your plumbing crisis. It takes forever to fix and even then, you always fear it happening again.
My crisis was with the sink, shower and toilet upstairs.. your kitchen would have been worse :(

    1. hels; it takes forever to even get a plumber here. All repairs have to go through housing with paperwork and approvals etc. My kitchen wasn't so bad, I had plenty of towels for mopping up.

  7. What a nuisance but it sounds like the drain has been well cleared now.
The jade looks covered in blooms.
The grumpy face is very clear.

    1. Andrew; it was a nuisance at the time, but it's over now. Well, until it happens again, but maybe it won't. The jade is almost covered in blooms. I like the grumpy face clouds.

  8. Drains again, I'm so sorry this keeps happening. Some people must think you can put anything in a sink or toilet and it just "goes away." They are wrong, of course.

The nature photos are a delight to see.

    1. messymimi; it was annoying but I lived here almost 14 years before anything went wrong so overall, I've been lucky.

  9. Clever of you to find a solution for washing up while awaiting the plumber. That's a really bright moon that no-one captured.

    1. Val; I had to find a solution or not cook, and I didn't fancy living on toast for a few day. That was last week's full moon.

  10. If you could hear me reading your post... Why the heck did it take so long to get help?
In the Caravan Park in Madeley/Perth I asked Ingo if he forgot to flush - of course he did not but the smell....
Went to the reception and 5 minutes later someone was there to investigate. We left and in the day the problem was solved.
And that was but bad smell (the neighbor... too long) - yours was a real emergency! I think I would not pay all the rent money for that month! Or find a solution with your host!
    This is NOT OK!
Wow on the full moon and yes, times are crazy - my strawberries are ripe.
Grumpy I will be tomorrow. Another Webinar is up...

    1. Iris; because here you have to call housing maintenance (free) and they are always busy so you have to wait your turn. I could have hired an "outside" plumber but that would cost me 100s of $$$. In public housing (government owned) we don't have a lot of choice and rent must still be paid. At least the rent is cheap enough.
That full moon is lovely isn't it! Poor you with another Webinar. You will do well.

    2. I am renting out and I have to react asap! They come to me (two small apartments my Mum gave me and I pay BIIIIG, I could take The Ghan from what I pay to the government... I still check out if it´s OK. Ingo says I should sell.... but what is money worth these days?)
      I will endure the Webinars...

  11. I'm glad that drain of yours is free to flow now but what a go you do have and such inconvenience as well. Your description of the plumber made me laugh, R.

    1. Margaret D; the plumber really was a very large young man, I'm sure he must have Viking blood!

  13. Neighbor having the same plumbing problem? The clog was downstream from both of you and you two were sending water to each other.

    1. Mike; I wasn't sending any water up to her, she wasn't having any problems, it was all in my kitchen. Her earlier problem was flooding by rainwater back in January.

  14. Yuck! to the drain problems, and ahh! what pretty flowerbuds with promises of spring, even distant.

    1. Charlotte; the drains are fine again now and I think those buds are new spring leaves, but they could be blossoms.

  15. I'm so happy you got the plumbing fixed but I'm sorry it took so long but I understand not wanting to pay an outside plumber that is hundreds of dollars depending on the time of day and how long it takes. I live in an apartment and am fortunate that our maintenance crew comes when we call. And actually, we're not even allowed to call an outside plumber or an outside anybody. Everything is provided for us and I am thankful for that. I hope your plumbing issues are over and done with now and forever. :)
