Sunday Selections #766
Long ago, Kim of Frog Ponds Rock, (who no longer blogs), dreamed up a meme called Sunday Selections.
A place where those who were willing could put up photos they wanted to share, new, old, good, bad or indifferent, any photos you please.
Nothing rude or vulgar though.
And we don't mind at all if other bloggers care to join us.
In memory of Elephant's Child, the meme is now continued by myself and a few others. Andrew is one. Messymimi is another. Drop in to their blogs and have a look.
Wisewebwoman has also been joining us occasionally.
From "no-one"
a double rainbow
ever noticed how sliced mushrooms look like little toothbrushes?
on a recent trip to the doctor I passed this blue tongue lizard, it was a chilly morning and he was very still so I thought he was dead
on my way home again I noticed he was in a different position so I stood and watched for a bit
he moved! Just very slightly, you can see one of his tiny feet splayed out, I went home a bit happier, though still worried about him being exposed to the cold and hoped he would get himself home.
I didn't notice this loose hanging awning until I walked under it just as the wind blew and it smacked me on the head, knocked my hat off too. I dropped to my knees and looked around to see who had "attacked" me as I picked up my hat. I wasn't badly hurt, barely raised a bump, but I went inside the shop and let them know it needed fixing.
further towards home I saw this Halloween ghost
and close to home this pair of dancing glow-in-the-dark skeletons
gantrys (gantries?) in resting mode behind the local Foodland store where MORE new flats and townhouses are being built on land that once housed a mental hospital.
a few years ago ths coreopsis was a quarter the size it is now and someone had yanked a piece out by the roots and just left it so I took it home and planted it.
It died.
I'd been hoping for my own pot of sunshine. Que Sera
Help! Help! Somebody cut me!
The branch broke in a windstorm, so someone chainsawed it for safety.
this is my latest pot roast simmering away, the orange colour is partly the tomato sauce (ketchup) in the liquid and partly the glow from the light above the stove.
here is the meat all pulled apart and cooling before being frozen in sandwich sized portions.

Whoever chainsawed that branch should cut it back below the point where it splits. Deliver that message, will you? :)
ReplyDeleteI love the coreopsis and also the blue-tongued lizard! Hopefully he warmed up.
I've never seen mushrooms cut lengthwise like that, but they DO look like toothbrushes!
Steve Reed; the branch would have been cut by council workers and is within the garden now, out of the way, so they assume that is good enough, but I would have cut it all the way back. The open section is an invitation to bugs and disease. It's within the grounds of a retirement village so I don't know who I would deliver a message to.
DeleteThe coreopsis is like dozens of little suns all shining at once.
I haven't seen the lizard again, so I'm choosing to believe he crawled away to safety.
I was chopping the mushrooms to add to spaghetti sauce.
Dang! Assaulted by an awning! I'm glad you're okay. Yes, I definitely understand the mug, heh, heh! I find the blue-tongue lizard almost as disturbing as "my" possum! They are things I don't expect to see. Your pulled pot roast looks delicious.
ReplyDeleteVal; It was a bit of a shock to suddenly be bumped on the head and it hurt for a few days every time I passed the comb over that spot, but it's just a memory now. I knew oyu would understand the mug, they were hanging on a rack in K-Mart, fairly cheap too, but the last thing I need here is another coffee mug! The blue tongue lizards aren't at all dangerous and quite shy, usually scuttling back into their home if someone walks by. The can bite if picked up suddenly and they hang on quite tightly, it's hard to get one off if he has a hold on a hand or finger.
DeleteThe roast is delicious, I make one a couple of times a year just for the sandwich meat, but have one serve "on the day" while it is hot, with other vegetables for dinner.
Very beautiful photos !
ReplyDeleteIngrid; thank you.
DeleteYour photos are beautiful.
ReplyDeleteLinda's Relaxing Lair; thank you.
Delete'Bluey' is waiting for some warmth before it gets active, not that the do much anyway.
ReplyDeleteThat awning is so dangerous. I don't know why it wasn't noticed and something done about it. Your injuries could have been much worse.
There should be lots of meat for sandwiches. What a good idea. So a pot roast cooks in a liquid?
Andrew; I do wonder why Bluey was out in the open at all, on a footpath up against a fence. The awning is on a side of the shopping centre where people don't usually walk, I went that way because my usual path had a man wandering aimlessly while looking at his phone.
DeleteYes, pot roast cooks in a liquid, on the stove top. I buy a bolar roast (beef), cut off as much outer fat as I can, then sear it all over for added flavour before adding the liquid, enough to cover it to begin with and once boiling turn it down to simmer until the liquid is almost all gone, turning it over about halfway through. My liquid is a cup of tomato sauce, a tablespoon of worcestershire and a sachet of tomato paste, mixed well, then topped up with water and mixed well, I prepare it before I do the searing so that it is ready. I use an old tupperware jug that holds 3 pints. Keep the lid on the pot while the meat simmers. These days I buy a smaller piece of beef because of the cost, so get fewer sandwiches. That piece you see in the pot was $31.
Is Val your fave? Cute mug. Would be great to understand the story behind it. love the pics and a bit of spookies! Fun.
ReplyDeleteThe Happy Whisk; Val is one of many favourites, but on her blog she often references a cashier that is a favourite of hers and calls her "my fave", so when I saw that mug hanging in a store I had to get a photo.
DeleteChubby little lizard! Hope he found some warmth.
ReplyDeleteAlex J. Cavanaugh; most blueys are a bit chubby, there are plenty of insects and other bits for them to eat. The very young ones are slimmer but only in the first year. I hope this one found his way home.
DeleteI hope the lizard got to where he could hibernate (or whatever they do when it's cold). Lots of interesting selections here, I hope maybe you can get a coreopsis someday.
ReplyDeleteThe only thing to say to such a bump on the head is, "Ouch!"
messymimi; they do hibernate and I suspect he came out too early because we had a very warm spell and then the temperatures dropped again. I hope he found his way home.
Delete"Ouch" wasn't quite what I said, but at least I didn't say the really bad word.
I have given up on coreopsis for now, my patch doesn't seem to do well with flowers. Creepy crawlies and snails/slugs eat any seedlings and bigger plants just don't settle in well. Even in pots, somethng eats them and it's probably possums as well as cockatoos and rats. I'll stick with the sturdier succulents for now.
The lizard is looking healthy and how lucky to see a double rainbow, the skeletons and good there and gosh you were lucky you didn't get hurt with the awning falling. Glad you are ok.
ReplyDeleteMargaret D; the lizard did look healthy, but wasn't moving until my second trip past and then very sluggish from the cold. I am glad the awning didn't hit me harder, it was just one loose corner.
DeleteTwo wishes, I hope she them! And ohhhh, little toothbrushes :-)
ReplyDeleteIngo once hushed such a lizard off a bitumen road so save him - did he show his blue tongue in disagreement! Hope your lille guy made it!
Sorry, Santa, but I had to laugh abot the smacking!
Santa? Your parcel arrived, see here! I am sorry, I opened it as there was no notice what is was for!
Glow in the dark dancers sounds great!
Houses build on that ground... open for scary stories (#Supernatural).
Poor flower and branch!!!
Your meat looks very yummy! Great sunrise and cute mug!
Have a great Sunday and thank you! Funny enough I got something the other day for you - will send it from Perth, though! Those mail-prices overseas are ....
I "buy" a ""had" - hope no-one had the wishes and that they get fulfilled!
DeleteIris; I didn't know about wishing on rainbows, I shall tell "no-one". I almost never see any myself. I hope the lizard made it home too, I'm glad Ingo saved one from being run over, I have seen too many here that get runover and the "colony" that lives here is much smaller now, there used to be dozens of lizards. They bask in the sun on the warm driveway and people drive in and just don't see them.
DeleteI am glad you opened the parcel, now you can read the book.
The meat is very yummy, I like it on sandwiches, but it is also good eaten hot with mashed potatoes and a green vegetable.
Yes, and when Ingo and I married in Joondalup on the way to our friend´s car, there was a rainbow, too - they said it brings us luck :-)
DeleteDo you know the wonderful song "Somewhere over the rainbow"? There even was an ad on TV when we were in Perth.
Oh, I didn´t know about the lizards being in danger! Ingo back in the day - 1995 - just did it cause the poor fella really was in the way - he drove at only 80km/h and saw in time.
From 1957, the first version of the book! I just read the beautiful "hommage" to the author´s wife.
And yes, I can imagine the meat so yummy in both!
Iris; I do know that song but haven't heard it in a very long time. I remember there was an ad on TV but can't remember any more about it.
DeleteI hope the little lizard survived. There's no way of knowing about these things, unless you find the corpse. Shame about the coreopsis - a pot of sunshine would be just perfect.
ReplyDeletejabblog; these lizards are quite big, growing up to 30cm long and quite chubby when there is enough food available.I'm choosing to believe this one found his way home. A pot of sunshine would be marvellous.
DeleteI thought "Paper knives" upon seeing your cut mushrooms - which I do not cut like that either. Coreopsis are wonderfully sunshiny, and a nice dye plant too. That lizard is a beaut, I hope it survived.
ReplyDeleteCharlotte; The mushroom was on the way to being diced and I just happened to notice the toothbrush shape. I wouldn't use the coreopsis for dye, just to enjoy and i can look at the one on the footpath for that. I hope the lizard survived.
DeleteA nice collection of photographs.
ReplyDeleteYes, I do agree sometimes sliced mushrooms can look like little toothbrushes!
I wish you a happy and peaceful week ahead.
All the best Jan
Lowcarb team member; thank you.
