Sunday selections # 796
Long ago, Kim of Frog Ponds Rock, (who no longer blogs), dreamed up a meme called Sunday Selections.
A place where those who were willing could put up photos they wanted to share, new, old, good, bad or indifferent, any photos you please.
Nothing rude or vulgar though.
And we don't mind at all if other bloggers care to join us.
In memory of Elephant's Child, the meme is now continued by myself and a few others. Andrew is one. Messymimi is another. Drop in to their blogs and have a look.
Wisewebwoman has also been joining us occasionally.
see this mess of cigarette butts and stinky ashes? guess where it was dumped? In the recycle bin!! it really is useless trying to educate some people, to them a bin is a bin and they will dump what they like in whichever bin is handy.
the beehive in a tree a couple of blocks away from my home used to be functioning, crammed with bees all happily doing what bees do best and one day I saw someone had stapled flyscreen wire over the opening 😢 A few days later someone else had shoved a folded empty toilet roll core and jammed it in near the top so the bees could still find a way in and out. But that has been removed and more staples added.
The bees are gone 😢😢
I am not sure where I got this picture, but I do love the gates.
brilliant red autumn leaves twining along a brush fence
I found this book in a community library on my way to the shops, I hope it will help me learn to decipher cryptic clues. Some are easy, but others less so and it frustrates the dickens out of me.
this tree, a block away, is easily 10 metres wide, with a metre being 39 inches, that makes the tree 32 and a half feet across. I like the size and the open-ness of the branches.
in the same street is this Gingko tree which I thought would be fully golden and dropping leaves by now
as you can see some are still quite green, though some have begun to fall and carpet the footpath.
I was VERY happy to see my favourite mayonnaise back in the store and bought two. They also have my favourite dill cucumbers back in stock, Fehlbergs brand, but I seem to have lost that photo. I'll take another.
another pretty gate, how often do you see one in this lovely yellow?
raindrops on a plant I don't know the name of
and a silver Seneca (?) growing strongly amongst all the greenery.
a nice new pile of dirt has been delivered to the empty block
in my own garden the hanging basket of Swedish Ivy, also known by other names by many people, looks to be doing well
but the backside shows where birds and possums have been tearing at the basket to get nesting material. When spring comes around I will ask a friend to help me get it down and repot into a plastic hanging basket. I will leave that material on the ground for them.
I had to take this photo through my screen door, opening it would have seen those four dozen or more mourning doves flying away in a blur. There are a few tiny sparrows in the mix but most get chased off by one of the doves. I am not fond of these birds, but the upstairs neighbour loves them (LOOOOVES them, oh they are sooo beautiful) and throws out oat flakes twice a day. I can't say anything to her because I remember how much I loved to feed the sulphur crested cockatoos until I learned that I was doing them harm and possibly helping to spread the beak-and-feather disease.
My dentist's reception area has a new seasonal display,
wooden apples. I "wooden" want to chomp into one of those!
We're back! There were so many bargains today!
Thank goodness! We were beginning to worry. You were gone so long!
here's a surprise, a baby blue-tongue lizard is living under the cabinet on my front porch. I put out a mayonnaise lid with water and hoped he could find his own food. He would come out daily for a sunbake but I haven't seen him since the weather turned colder, he's probably hibernating. I hope he survives. I am glad I saw him, because I was planning on repainting that cabinet in some brighter colours and the fumes might have killed him.

Now I want to see what the redheads bought. Hope your lizard comes back in warmer weather. A worm would have to work really hard to get into those apples!
ReplyDeleteVal; the redheads bought groceries, miniature vegetables, mini loaf of bread, coffee etc, all plastic of course.
DeleteThe gingko tree is impressive, isn't it? I know it thrives across Australia but I cannot remember seeing it in my part of Melbourne.
ReplyDeletehels; the gingko is very lovely but I think not yet full grown, unless there are different size varieties.
DeleteVery nice post. I have never seen that Mayo before. I love the gingko tree. Nice dentist office too. Have a very nice day today.
ReplyDeleteDVArtist; thank you. That has been my favourite Mayo for years and I hope the local store keeps it in stock now. the gingko is pretty.
DeleteWhy on earth would someone go to the trouble of stapling a screen over a beehive? We desperately need bees right now. Hopefully that person got stung...
ReplyDeleteAlex J.Cavanaugh; I am very sad about the bees and can only think someone nearby has a fear and doesn't realise they won't deliberately chase and sting you for no reason.
DeleteI like the red autumn leaves and the Gingko tree.
ReplyDeleteHappy Sunday wishes ... have a good week ahead.
All the best Jan
Lowcarb team member; thank you, I love the autumn colours too, just as much as I love the green shades of spring and summer.
DeleteOh my gosh that mini shopping cart / trolly is so stinkin' cute. Glad you got two of the mayos. That rocks.
ReplyDeleteThe Happy Whisk; Those mini shopping carts were available years ago as part of a "points collection" scheme by a supermarket, you could buy the trolley and collect packs with mini grocery items each week according to the points your shopping added up to. I got this lot as a package deal from a thrift shop for only $5.
DeleteOh my goodness. That's fun.
DeleteSome stupid authorities will install a recycling bin on its own, with a predictable result. Recycling bins must always be next to general rubbish bins.
ReplyDeleteBees and birds. I suppose the neighbour was there when you were feeding cockatoos, but if not, you could certainly say something.
My brain won't work for cryptic crosswords. I'll be interested to hear whether it is helpful.
Andrew; our recycling bins are always next to the regular landfill bins and the green waste bins, but certain people don't care and a bin is a bin is a bin...the result is filthy bins that smell bad and I used to wash them out but I have given up on that now and keep my own landfill bin inside my closed back porch so it stays clean.
DeleteThe neighbour was here while I was feeding the cockatoos and even threw down seeds herself for a while until I explained about the beak and feather disease.
I am not very good at cryptics but now and again I'll "see" an answer and keep trying for the rest. A lot of the time the answer lies within the clue as a set of letters or an anagram.
Even when there’s a rubbish bin next to it, some people will throw trash in the recycle. It makes you wonder what they are thinking.
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed your selections very much as always.
messymimi; it makes me wonder what they are NOT thinking. I think they just don't care, they do whatever is conveneient for themselves. Thank you.
DeleteLovely selection and I wonder if that lizard is still there or disappeared somewhere.
ReplyDeleteGoodness fancy putting those things in the recycle bin, some have no idea at all.
Those wooden apples look effective.
Margaret D; I haven't seen the lizard since the weather cooled, he may be hibernating. I won't know until I see him again next summer. Too many people don't care about the proper bins to use.
DeleteOh, my, the German heart cries! Plastic, paper, cans... all different bins here. And most stick to that.
ReplyDeleteThe beehive sure is..... why??? That person should eat plastic!
You like to challenge your brain, huh? Good idea!
Always fun to see products from my German childhood in your place - haven´t seen a THOMY-ad in ages!
Yellow is a happy color - here another grey, way too cold day. 14C.
I wooden want to bite into one of those apples either - the English language is fun!
Owwwww... Once Ingo stopped the car (in 1995) to drag such a lizard from the road (bitumen) - did he/she got mad! Ingo just wanted to help! Hope you see yours again!
Iris; I have seen your German bins on some you tube videos, they are an excellent idea. But they are in the city, not in personal homes? These recycle bins for the flats are only one bin to be shared between four flats and every single week it is already overflowing with too much rubbish, and they only get emptied once a fortnight. I am so sad about the bees, I cried when I saw that.
DeleteI don't challenge my brain too often, I have to be in the right mood and lately haven't done any crosswords, not even easy ones.
Ingo thought he was helping, but didn't know that lizards are cold-blooded like snakes and like to soak up heat from the roads, like my baby one was doing on my concrete porch. Years ago, I had a full grown one living in the drain down beside the porch and he would come up and soak up the heat too.
We have a paper-bin, one for compost, plastic and rubbish right at our houses. The others are for in case yours are full (which sadly too often happens).
DeleteFor glass that is not recycle-able you have to use the public ones though.
Yes, I´d cried, too. Or yelled (inside).
Yes, Ingo knew, but the middle of the road just is a bad idea! He shuffled him/her to the side.
I love the lizard! Too bad about the bees.
ReplyDeleteJenn Jilks; thank you. I hope to see the lizard again next summer. Whoever blocked the bees should be ashamed and I hope they learn one day how necessary bees are.
DeleteI will never understand those who hate bees. Without them, we all die, you stupid eejits. I'm so aware of hurting birds with food. Love that yellow cat and I see your wee girlies have been busy with shopping. Lovely mix of photos.
ReplyDeleteXO
WWW
Wisewebwoman; I will never understand either, but some people have so much fear and maybe allergy too. The girls love shopping and bringing home bargains.
DeleteLovely collection of photos. I've been debating which one I liked best, and ended up with the lizard taking the prize -- it was tough!
ReplyDeleteAnd it seems that the latest update fixed the commenting troubles for me - yay!
PS, the one with netting over the beehive never stood a chance. Even allergic me know better than to kill off bees!
DeleteCharlotte; I am very sad about the bees, but still see some on flowering plants so there must be another hive somewhere.
