Sunday Selections # 797
Long ago, Kim of Frog Ponds Rock, (who no longer blogs), dreamed up a meme called Sunday Selections.
A place where those who were willing could put up photos they wanted to share, new, old, good, bad or indifferent, any photos you please.
Nothing rude or vulgar though.
And we don't mind at all if other bloggers care to join us.
In memory of Elephant's Child, the meme is now continued by myself and a few others. Andrew is one. Messymimi is another. Drop in to their blogs and have a look.
Wisewebwoman has also been joining us occasionally.
Beginning today with an abandonment:
the redheads have abandoned the back porch for the duration of winter
"We are plastic, so don't feel the cold" they said, "but we would rather be inside"
Their cardboard box rooms have been packed away for safety
the section where they were has plastic sheeting to help protect from rain but the rest is just shadecloth and bamboo blinds which were already in place when I moved in here.
the plastic sheeting helps, but there are gaps at the top between the framing and the upstairs balcony, so if the wind and rain are in the right direction, everything gets wet and even without actual rain, the cardboard box rooms absorb moisture from the air and become soft and soggy.
this section of garden and driveway is up towards the main road
and water has been leaking there for quite some time. I was pleased to see the orange netting appear and the digging up of pipes
I hope this short video plays, you can see the water swirling as the pipe still leaks
with water flowing over the path
down the gutter all the way towards the road
and pooling badly, spreading across the driveway, with nowhere to drain
because the old stormwater drains (all of them) are packed full of dirt and have been for years. They were like this when I moved in already, so clearly nobody in charge cares enough to get that sorted.
on a recent longish walk, I saw this choko vine, I was quite surprised as I haven't seen one since we left Sydney in 1979
here are the fruits (vegetables?) and I don't even remember what they get used for.
in my own street is this beautiful bright orange Boston Ivy
with the fence next door to it having a yellow covering
this yellow hibiscus is in the same yard as the "Jasminus Polyanthus" the jasmine that I fear because I cannot walk outside while it is blooming as the very heavy heady scent hangs in the air for hours over several blocks. I go everywhere with a many-times-folded hanky pressed close to my nose to filter my air.
further around another block nearby is this fence full of pyrostegia
the flower buds look like small thin balloonsand then open to look like this, they don't appear to have any scent, which is a hooray for me, and the bees love it. I had this growing along the back fence in my previous home.
What to do with a frozen solid chicken breast found buried in the freezer? Thaw it, slice it, marinate in a honey-soy-garlic mixture overnight, and then fry it up, drain on some paper towel
and eat, it was delicious hot and just as good cold.
this is just one of the many black swans on Adelaide's River Torrens
These photos were taken around 2017 when my brother, a concrete construction engineer, lived in Adelaide for a few years while working on the "Northern Expressway", here he is helping his grandson put down food for the swans. It is available from a nearby cafe for a small charge and stops people from throwing other food that isn't good for them.
one swan was very appreciative and followed us as we walked up and down the riverbank.

Chokos are nutritious, fat free and easy to grow seasonally. Why do most greengrocers not have them?
ReplyDeletehels; maybe they don't keep well, or are unpopular. I remember them as being tasteless, a "filler" vegetable to add to other things.
DeleteCall the council about the blocked drain. They should have a cleaning programme for clearing drains, but I don't know if any do.
ReplyDeleteThe chicken is mouth watering to look at.
Choko are tasteless in my memory and better used as food for pigs.
While we walked over the river on some kind of structure when we last visited and could see the parkland below, we didn't get down to the river itself. Always next visit, we thought. Little did we know.
Andrew; the blocked drains are on Housing trust property, and we all know housing doesn't like to spend time or money unless they are forced to, like when I emailed the commissioner for housing about my sewage flooded bathroom.
DeleteHow long ago did you visit? Was the fancy footbridge to the oval already there? it's nice to walk across away form vehicle traffic. You could come and walk along the river and see the swans, bring Ray in your heart and mind.
Lots of interesting selections today! I hope the Redheads have a nice winter indoors.
ReplyDeleteI like all the pretty blooms. What you call chokos we call mirlitons, and they are popular here. They are sliced in half, heated, the inside scooped and mixed with either a meat/rice or seafood mixture, or sometimes other veggies, then the filling put back in the shell and baked again.
The black swan does look beautiful.
messymimi; so they are in fact a "filler" vegetable. I like our black swans, but don't often go down to the river. The Redheads have planned a winter of sleeping and TV watching.
DeleteLove the skull! Henry (our skeleton) says hi!
ReplyDeleteDo the Redheads have a proper "second home"?
As I read (and write) heavy rain, thunder and lighting here! I hope my seeds survive... Ingo thinks so, I´m not so sure...
Yips. Same here. On the roads. No one cares.
Sydney. We left after a day. Came back 6 months later to sell our car. It was cold, but the people were so friendly!!!
You really have Autumn colors... Perth was in the news due to "cold" weather! We´ll hit 28C today.
Minus the garlic that chicken sounds great!
And the Swan!!! Clever to give proper food, too! Here people throw bread in for the ducks :-(
Iris; minus the garlic?? no no no. It isn't much garlic anyway, the marinade is mostly honey and soy sauce, blended with a little garlic added, but you could leave it out.
ReplyDeleteThe redheads do not have a proper second home, they sit in the other recliner watching TV or reading their tiny books (real books with pages and words), then maybe some days they lie down with a blanket and sleep.
We have rain overnight most of the time with sunshine during the day. Later in the season we will have daytime rain more often.
I have a lot of skulls here. I think I have shown them in the past.
We had neighbors who SO overdid it with garlic it makes me gag. Funny enough when at the Steak House I love the garlic bread. Logic??? Ingo is the same even.
DeleteOwwww, pics of the tiny books???
I have a ... cat-skeleton. Maybe... good idea... I´ll share some SITAR! Together with Henry? I´ll see.
I used to have Bat skeletons but gave them to the twins mum for her Halloween displays.
DeleteThat skull is interesting, and the flowers are looking great and plus bringing the bees is certainly a bonus. Not good that drain, hope it gets fixed soon and you don't have to wait forever, hopefully, R.
ReplyDeleteLove the swan :)
Margaret D; the skull has a battery and lights up when switched on, it was for Halloween. I don't think that drain is getting fixed. All the drains here are like that and were already blocked when I moved in.
DeleteTantas fotos e adorei as flores, hibisco, heras que adoro ver em verde e depois vermelhos , a receita de frango com mel e o ganso!
ReplyDeleteLindo domingo!
beijos, tudo de bom,chica
chica; thank you, I love all the different colours too.
DeleteI have never seen a pyrostegia, it looks beautiful, I also like the black swan they are quite seldom ! But you should take the skull in your first picture to the dentist ! it looks ugly with a tooth missing !
ReplyDeleteIngrid; I love pyrostegia, it looks like you could warm your hands over the flaming flowers. The skull is a halloween one, it is supposed to be ugly.
DeleteThe skull really does catch the eye, and the flowers are looking lovely, especially with the bees enjoying them.
ReplyDeleteThat drain situation sounds like such a nuisance, fingers crossed it gets sorted sooner rather than later.
The swan is beautiful, I always think they add such elegance to the river scenes.
Veronica Lee; I like the skull, I have several more inside the house, the more decorated ones. The drain situation is a nuisance when it rains heavily and will probably never get sorted. It would be costly and Housing doesn't have enough budget I think, the governments keep cutting funding.
DeleteI think our black swans are beautiful.
Lots of lovely photographs (the drains, not so much!) The redheads will appreciate being able to relax indoors, out of the cold and wet.
ReplyDeleteA tasty, unexpected meal is always acceptable, especially if it serves two meals.
I think the black swans are quite gorgeous and very elegant. It's good that people can buy the proper food for them.
jabblog; most people just ignore the drains, they only flood the driveway when it rains heavily and most people here have cars. Most of my meals serve me for two days, I eat less these days. I like being able to buy the proper food for the swans, I hope everyone does that and doesn't throw what they shouldn't eat. The Redheads have been sleeping for three days now...
DeleteThe point of a drain is to drain! I'm sure there are other pet projects that take precedence. The chicken looks fantastic!
ReplyDeleteVal; I live in subsidised housing and with government funds continually being cut there isn't enough to pay for the clearing of drains that only flood in heavy rains or when pipes are leaking. The chicken was very nice and I will do the same with the other frozen chicken breast.
DeleteA new roof was put on our building last fall, and mu, o my! Too many apartments with leaks. Not mine, though.
ReplyDeleteJoanne; so nice to see you here again. I hope you are well. New roofs will help keep the rains out, I am glad your apartment wasn't leaking.
DeleteSorry to see that drain. Yikes. Food looks good. Love the orange.
ReplyDeleteThe Happy Whisk; that drain is just one of many and all are the same. Orange flowers are so warming to look at when the weather is cold.
Delete🧡
DeleteVery nice post. I love the skull on your porch. Love blooms and that chicken looks great. Have a nice day today.
ReplyDeleteDVArtist; thank you. The skull is old but still lights up when switched on.
DeleteLovely photos. I love the flowers and swan especially. 💛
ReplyDeleteLinda's Relaxing Lair; thank you. I love the swan more because he or she doesn't set off my allergies.
DeleteThe swan wanted to adopt you
ReplyDeleteRuby Rose and the Big Little Angels 3; I don't think so, he knows where he belongs.
DeleteThey really should fix your drains!
ReplyDeleteThe skull took my eye and I do like the pyrostegia, such wonderful colour.
Lovely photographs of the black swan too.
Sending good wishes all the way from the UK.
All the best Jan
I'm surprised no one wants to clear those drains. I like the pyrostegia -- we call it "flame vine" in Florida. Good on the cafe for selling proper swan food!
