Thursday Thoughts # 68

Image
from 6 Ways to Mental by R Mac Wheeler " ...all that small talk. I couldn't see the purpose. Why share your opinion about current affairs? Politics doesn't require discussion. All the parties are ignorant fools stealing the public blind. Who wants to talk about wars and crime?" Todays Thoughts. Modern house building styles. Have we all noticed that trend for square, blocky porticoes at the front of houses? Does anyone else think they look out of place?  Are we trying to mimic the feeling of walking into a grand hotel?  A sheltered entrance is a good idea, and done properly can look very nice.  But far too many are over-sized and simply do not suit the house.  In particular, an older style home that has been "renovated" with a big square portico added, just looks wrong to me. Here's an example: from the real estate section of the paper; this new home design isn't as bad as some I've seen; the portico isn't a solid concr...

Musical Monday # 72

Image
Musical Monday I was introduced to Musical Monday by Delores who copied the meme from another site. I think it’s a fun way to show off some of the music we like and brighten up our Mondays at the same time.  I’ll be finding my clips on you tube , so will simply credit that site since there are often so many versions of everything and I wouldn’t want to accidentally credit the wrong artist. Today’s clip is: Los Del Rio Macarena Does anyone else remember when this swept Australia? (I hope it plays) I remember here in Adelaide, a radio station held a Macarena contest and school kids all over town skipped school to gather at the appointed spot and dance to the song. My son J went too and said it was a great afternoon

Sunday Selections # 246

Image
Welcome back to Sunday Selections! This once-a- week-meme was originally begun by Kim of Frog Ponds Rock, as a way to showcase some of the many photos we all take, but don't get around to showing on our blogs. The rules are very simple:- 1. post photos of your choice, old or new, under the Sunday Selections title 2. link back to me, River , somewhere in your post 3. leave me a comment so that I know you've joined in and can come over and see what you've posted. 4. hop on over to Elephant’s Child to see more of her wonderful photos.   Andrew often joins in too. I usually go with a theme for my Sunday Selections and this week we are back at the beach .  The photos follow a similar theme to last week, so there may or may not be commentary. plenty of places to sit and rest the jetty from a distance the beginning of the jetty, in the foreground the posts indicate one of the walkways through the dunes to the beach. Watch out for snakes...

it's been a busy few days at chez River

with four of my neighbours requiring my assistance with various things.  Neighbour PT, diabetic, older than me, mostly manages quite well, but lately she has been ill, with her blood sugar unstable, falling far too low, so she called her carer and went off to hospital to get stabilised and I cared for her budgie. He's a lovely little fellow, whistling at me as I replaced his water with fresh. Neighbour K, went off to hospital a couple of days later, I cared for her cat overnight. He's very quiet, very placid, sat in his basket the whole time I was there putting out fresh food and water. He is people shy though, and while he knows me, he wouldn't let me pat him. Neighbour PW also went to hospital. She's quite ill, and stayed in hospital a couple of nights. I looked after her cat too. This cat is very friendly and quite spoilt, wanting me to pat and scratch him the whole time I was there, she did say that's what she does a lot, gives him attention all the time. ...

Wednesday's Words on a Friday

On Wednesdays , assorted people have been taking monthly turns at putting up a selection of six (or twelve) words which is called “Words for Wednesday” . We have taken over this meme from Delores , who had been having computer problems. This month the meme continues here , at Elephant’s Child with words supplied by Margaret and Sue . Essentially the aim is to encourage us to write.      Each week we are given a choice of prompts: which can be words, phrases, music or an image.   What we do with those prompts is up to us:  a short story, prose, a song, a poem, or treating them with ignore... Some of us put our creation in comments on the post, and others post on their own blog.  I would really like it if as many people as possible joined into this fun meme.  If you are posting on your own blog - let me know so that I, and other participants, can come along and applaud. I’m hopeless at poetry so I always do a story. It’s a fun challenge…why no...

Thursday Thoughts # 67

Image
from 6 Ways to Where by R Mac Wheeler " "I need to make a decision," I said "About?" "What I want to be when I grow up." "So what do you like to do?" "I could kill people for a profession," I said.  "Assassin. If I'm going to do something, I want to get paid well for it." "You think," he said, "that's a valid career choice?" Why cross anything off the list?" Today's Thoughts This is a mulberry tree , a baby, if size is any indication, growing in the grounds here, up near the front fence. this is what the fruits look like; red like this are the un ripe ones, the fully ripe fruits are black, juicy and sweet. Since the fruit began ripening, several of us who walk past daily, have stopped and picked a handful to enjoy. Today, when I walked to the tree, I found all the lower branches, and higher than I could reach, had been stripped of all ripe fruits.  Someone m...
