Sunday Selections # 530

Long, long ago, in days of yore...Kim of Frog ponds Rock, (who no longer blogs), dreamed up a meme called Sunday Selections.

A place where those who were willing could put up photos they wanted to share, new, old, good, bad or indifferent, any photos you please.

Nothing rude or vulgar though.

And we don't mind at all if overseas bloggers care to join us.

The meme is now continued by Elephant's Child and I occasionally join in as do a few others. Andrew is one. Drop in to Elephant's Child and have a look.

(I added and "s" to the http of the above links, if they don't work, try it without the "s".)

Let's dive right in to the world of Meg and Gillian:

Meg: "Mum tried to knit a skirt, using a Skipper Doll pattern, she's Barbie's little sister, but bigger than us. The stitches are all loopy at the bottom, mum says maybe they will tighten up when it gets washed, and it is too long."

"also it is too small around the waist and wouldn't close, so mum sewed on a ribbon and made a bow. Now she is trying another skirt, same pattern but with adjustments to fit better."

"We have new winter boots"

"we LOVE them" 😀

Meg: "Let's climb up and show Yoda"

Gillian: I'm already up, what do you think of our new boots Yoda?"

"Nice, they are," says Yoda

Oops, this isn't supposed to happen

The girls are stewing apples and rhubarb and the mixture boiled over because they weren't watching it

Gillian: "I like this globe, it's so pretty and blue. Which colour is us?"

Meg: " this pink patch right here by my left hand, that's Australia and Mum says we live there."

I spent a few hours in the Botanic Gardens yesterday, the annual birthday lunch for an elderly neighbour

She is 85 now. These views are of the lake, we always sit at this table because it is her favourite spot, but we got cold this time, autumn is cooler than usual for April.

the ducks didn't seem to mind the cold

this is all that is left of the birthday cake I made, we each had a good sized slice, then the others wrapped up an extra slice to take home. Good thing too, this cake was huge, 10cm high and 20 cm across. Now I only have this little bit left over to eat up. I will freeze some, in individually wrapped slices.

  1. Those boots look excellent - and very, very comfortable.
What a wonderful place to have a birthday party. I am glad that your cake was appreciated too.

    1. Elephant's Child; I love the boots as much as the girls do. I'm glad the cake was appreciated, it's one of those fiddly recipes that take forever to make and bake. I probably won't make it again for another ten years.

  2. THE BOOTS!!! They are perfect! Ready for snow! Great job on the skirt though the girls are not entirely pleased.

    1. Linda Sue; I love those boots! The skirt is a learning project for me, I haven't knitted anything since a small scarf about fifteen years ago. I have lots of yarn, but most is too thick to suit such small girls.

  4. Love the Yoda approved boots. Great for climbing too.
How nice to have the party for your neighbor. The cake looked yummy and if the guests took some home, that is a good sign of success.

    1. Arkansas Patti; the boots are a big success, the girls don't want to ever take them off. They might change their minds around October when it starts getting hot again. I'm glad the other guests too cake home, it would have been far too much leftovers for just me to eat.

  5. I hope Meg and Gillian will have new, warm shirts in time for winter. Do they hope for snow?
It looks like you all had a wonderful bírthday.

    1. Charlotte; I'm planning on new shirts for the girls, they have tracksuits too, but we don't get snow in this part of Australia, we don't even get frost where I am. The birthday is an annual get together for our oldest neighbour.

  6. That must have been a nice outing even though a little cool. I must look up the gardens to check if we have been there. Thanks goodness the cake is not chocolate cake. I am sick of chocolate cake.

    1. Andrew; some might call it a little cool, but I kept my parka on the whole time. I am also sick of chocolate cake, every year up until now, the cake has been either chocolate, or a chocolate cheesecake. Lemon seemed a nice change.

  7. Is that an angle food cake? They were my mother's specialty. Involved a lot of egg whites beat stiff. If we came through the back door with one in the oven, we couldn't run or yell for fear of making it fall.

    1. Joanne; I think it must be Angel food cake, it is baked in an angel food tin and takes five egg yolks and eight egg whites to make. It's worth the trouble, but not enough to make it very often. I haven't made it for about ten years until yesterday.

  8. Never stewed apples and rhubarb together.

    1. Dora; I love apples and rhubarb together. Warm with vanilla custard or cold with ice cream, sometimes in a pie.

That is a lovely spot for a birthday dinner.

    1. messymimi; our winters are mild compared to yours, so they're mostly just excited about the new boots. What girl doesn't love new boots?

  11. Cute story! I hope to let go of my winter-boots for now, though... And the skirt, beautiful!
Our April is colder than usual, too.
Hm, despite I don´t like sweets I have to say the cake looks so soft, I´d go for a mini-slice!
Nice you went there to celebrate.

    1. Iris Flavia; I don't even own winter boots, it just doesn't get cold enough here, unless you go out on frosty mornings and I never do that. The cake is very soft and lemon flavoured.

    2. Rub it in! ;-) I hate the cold.
Hmmm, lemon sounds really good, not so sweet.

  12. Yum, apples and rhubarb!
Those girls are like little mountain goats, with their new boots--looks like now they can climb anywhere.
They make me laugh, they are such scamps, and so sweet too.

Oh, an outing to Botanical Gardens sounds so nice! And that cake looks terrific-lemon, was it, or just plain?
I too am tired of chocolate---often it's too heavy.
    I prefer fruit.
    Thanks for sharing, as always.

    The skirt is ambitious!

    1. Fresca; I have loved apples and rhubarb all my life, my mum cooked it every week in the winter, in summer only if the plant produced enough stalks. The girls have said they are never taking off the boots.
The cake was lemon, a bit of flavour is better than plain. The trouble with chocolate cakes these days is everyone makes mud cake and it is too strongly flavoured and very dense in texture.
The skirt is a work in progress, I'll get it right eventually.

    1. WWW; the skirt is okay, but not exactly as I planned it. It is supposed to be pleated, but the definition isn't clear enough for me, the pattern says knit five purl one, so on the second try I did a knit four purl two sequence and there is more "pleat" definition.
I love the boots. The cake was a great success, everybody loved it.

  14. Meg and Gillian have the whole world in their hands! Your cake looks delicious. Sorry about the boil-over, but the girls must have been so excited about the new boots that they forgot to check the pot.

    1. Val; the girls were checking the countries on the globe, working out where you all live.

  15. Love the new boots and sorry the skirt isn't quite what mom wanted. Also too bad your soup boiled over. You are lucky to live in Australia. Someday I would like to visit there.

    1. Granny Annie; it wasn't soup, it was apples and rhubarb stewing for desserts.
The skirt pattern is a work in progress.

  16. Was the rhubarb and apple mixture used for the cake? As long as it didn't burn, I'm sure it was still fine to use. The cake is teasing my taste buds!

Have a good week, River...cuddles to the lovely Lady Lola. Take care. :)

    1. Lee, no cake, it is just in single serve portions in the freezer for desserts. Lola is currently on the windowsill pretending to be a sphinx.
