it's the same old story
and here we go again:
AGAIN, Queensland's annual floodwaters are creating havoc ENDANGERING crops, homes and lives.
AGAIN, Australian Governments have done NOTHING to instigate construction and usage of large dams to contain those floodwaters, SAVING crops, homes and lives, with pipelines to direct those floodwaters to the drier areas of the country, again, SAVING crops, homes and lives.
Yes, it will be expensive and would have been cheaper if done decades ago, but it will be even more expensive if left until "sometime" in the future.
Queensland's annual floodwaters are enough to supply the entire continent with enough water.
Why has this never been looked into? And if it has, then why is nothing ever done?
That is... I have no words! Stupid? Like with the ever repeating huge fires because cutting down some rows in prevention is "not nice for the tourists"... I´m sorry parts of your country are as dumb as mine! Unbelievable.... Sad. For all the people, crops and all.
ReplyDeleteIris; I have been saying this for several years now, and others have written to the newspaper about it too. But nothing gets done.
DeleteBeyond my understanding...
DeleteThat is incredible and extremely short-sighted. Act now, before more damage is done, surely?
ReplyDeletejabblog; I agree, short-sighted, yet it seems to be permanently in the too-hard basket. If there are restrictions or limitations, why aren't we told? And why can't they be worked around to a common agreement?
DeleteFollow the money. Some of the funding that could be used for such a project is likely being diverted to some other pet projects, or lining politicians' pockets. But that's just my conspiracy-minded opinion!
ReplyDeleteVal; follow the money would be a good idea, but there is none. NO funding has ever been allocated to such a project. I agree that politicians often (always?) fund their own pet projects first, including lining their pockets.
DeleteHonestly,
ReplyDeleteI thought such nonsense only happened in Greece!
Katerinas Blog; no, it goes on everywhere!
DeleteDoes the flooding happen every year in Qld? If so, it would help Qld and would -_greatly_ help the desert parts of Australia to pipe the overflow from the dams and rivers. I am sure the western half of NSW would share the construction costs.
ReplyDeletehels; yes, Qld floods are an annual occurrence, it's the cyclone/monsoon season. There are so many parts of Australia that would benefit, from that water, but it just floods then runs out to sea.
DeleteGarden architect Edna Walling was ahead of her time, and her attitude toward water conservation by the 1920s was key. This philosophy of water conservation was one that she tried to instil in others. She planted drought-tolerant plants, used dense ground covers, and mulched frequently. She didn't mention mention supplying desert areas with the excess water, but this was 100+ years ago.
DeletePenny wise- pound foolish.
ReplyDeleteDora; a perfect explanation.
DeleteGood question R. plenty of water in the Lake Argyle area as well that could have been taken south - cost I suppose and now, Queensland is having a battle with too much water, bridges collapsing cutting of highways and other roads, just dreadful that natures water cannot be used efficiently. Cost I suppose and no one in the Government that I've heard of has mentioned piping water to the dry areas. Maybe rather involved and too hard to get it all going, and permission of the Indigenous people too would have to be taken into consideration.
ReplyDeleteMargaret D; permission from the Indigenous peoples would surely be given if they could see the benefits. Queenslands floods cause problems every single year and I just don't understand why something can't be done.
DeleteIt's sad and again, I am very concerned about the state of the world we live in.
ReplyDeletemessymimi; the state of the world seems pretty dire some days, thank goodness for good and nice things that happen to make us smile.
