Sunday Selections #792
Long ago, Kim of Frog Ponds Rock, (who no longer blogs), dreamed up a meme called Sunday Selections.
A place where those who were willing could put up photos they wanted to share, new, old, good, bad or indifferent, any photos you please.
Nothing rude or vulgar though.
And we don't mind at all if other bloggers care to join us.
In memory of Elephant's Child, the meme is now continued by myself and a few others. Andrew is one. Messymimi is another. Drop in to their blogs and have a look.
Wisewebwoman has also been joining us occasionally.
Charlotte's colour of the month is Gold, but I don't think I have any in this week's selection.
Before we begin, the printer issue has been solved with the purchase of a new printer, same model, same colour and with the more expensive proper ink.
Beginning with trees, okay just one tree, in my area:
I like the "fluted" trunk on this one, makes me think of old greek style columns on buildings
the "fluting" carries all the way up to where the branches spread
same tree, different angle
makes me wonder if the roots are also fluted.
pink bouganvillea, this particular one is easily several metres wide
a very nice driveway garden
the local playground has always had that mound in the middle, but look closer, it has been remade...
with steps and a slide. It used to be a more gentle slope and kids would roll down it, but it is steeper now and I see a lot more kids playing there.
another abandoned bike, is there a season for abandoning bikes?
one of the long row of garages down at the end of the driveway, there is another directly opposite, then a gap,
and even more garages and in the "gap"
a designated "dump site" so people can put broken or unwanted items there instead of out on the footpath which is illegal around these parts.
broken bedheads, cardboard boxes,
even old washing machines and ironing boards get put here
unfortunately some seem to think even household waste (bags of rotting foods etc) and clothing can be left when the waste should be in the weekly collection bin and clothing to the op-shops (thrift stores)
there is even an old baby's high chair. I remember when I first moved here these flats/units/apartments were for people over 50, now there are all ages.
This area gets cleaned up about once a month by a huge truck which scoops and crushes the lot and takes it all away.

Congrats on your new (working) printer! That bed headboard looks like it could be sawed off and used for a decorative accent piece. I don't know about abandoned bikes. Maybe somebody takes them for a joyride, and then leaves them when they tire of their illegal sport. Or maybe it's like leaving things out for people who might want them. This one appears to have lost its seat.
ReplyDeleteVal; I am going to treat this new printer very carefully. The headboard does look decorative but not knowing where it came from and whether or not it is "clean" (not drugs scented) is an issue, also it had been rained on. I think the bikes are left out for anyone who might need a frame in that size, this one was a small child size.
DeleteWhenever I see an abandoned bike, I always think that someone stole it for a joyride and just dumped it when they got to where they wanted to go.
ReplyDeleteDebra She Who Seeks; in these parts the bikes are more likely outgrown and left for anyone who might want them.
DeletePeople throw away a lot of stuff because they don't have space to store it. I have lots of space!
ReplyDeleteMike; I have lots of stuffstored in my garage because there just isn't room in my one bedroom flat. Seasonal things that I swap over a cople of times a year, lots of old gardening bits and pieces, far too many tools etc. I do need to toss a lot of it.
DeleteQue coiusa boa que tudo deu certo com a impressora! Ufa!!
ReplyDeleteLindas as fotos, troncos e flores. E quantos descartes! beijos, lindo domingo, chica
chica; I am very glad to have a working printer again and will NEVER buy cheap recycled ink cartridges again. That dump site of discards is almost always full.
Deletehuman trash, instant ghetto!
ReplyDeleteLinda Sue; almost instant ghetto, but it is contained to that one area and cleaned up on a regular basis, so at least the humans aren't just tossing it out of their windows/doors and messing up the driveway and gardens.
DeleteThe pink bouganvillea looks excellent, but what happes to the flowers? Do they just fall on the ground and wait for you to sweep it up?
ReplyDeleteHels; the flowers do just fall but I don't do any sweeping, that is up to the owners of the garden which is about three blocks away from my home.
DeleteI would guess the tree is a variety of a fig.
ReplyDeleteWhile the dumping area is not attractive, it is much better there than on the street, and a monthly pick up is good.
The driveway garden and the mound are both very well done. It's nice to see a real effort made.
Andrew; the tree does remind me of the Moreton Bay Figs, so probably it is related. The dumping area is way back out of sight so 100% better than the street, although a few people are too lazy to walk down there and still leave stuff on whauchever street is nearest their home. I like a nice driveway garden and think the playground mound will be popular for years.
DeleteThe tree is fascinating, it reminds me a bit of crepe myrtle trees here.
ReplyDeleteI like the playground. The hill would be nice to roll down.
messymimi; we have crepe myrtles here and I haven't noticed their trunks at all because I focus on the flowers. I shall look more closely now. Kids LOVE rolling down that hill.
DeleteCongrats on your new printer-- what a relief!
ReplyDeleteThe pink bougainvillea looks gorgeous. It reminded me of my hometown, Ipoh, which is nicknamed Bougainvillea City because the flower grows so abundantly there.
Seeing your photo brought back that familiar splash of color-- such a cheerful sight!” 🌸
Veronica Lee; thank you, Adelaide has a lot of Bouganvillea, the climate is similar to Mediterranean.
DeleteIt's a good thing a truck comes and takes the rubbish away and also handy for the people that live there for somewhere to put their old things. Yes, I agree about the clothes. The play ground looks good, nice and green.
ReplyDeleteMargaret D; imagine the mess and stink if a truck DIDN'T remove the stuff and it would soon spill over a very large area, think of city dumps in the past, it would be like that. i like that playground, it is always clean and neat.
DeleteInteresting tree! And wee... looks like Spring in Germany. I plan to "abandon" my bike onto the balcony as I have such good memories I so far fail to let it go!
ReplyDeleteBut with the darn e-scooters and e-bikes I´m out!Like the dump site! ... especially for useful things.
Iris; Trees are one of my favourite things. I gave away my bike earlier this year, my son-in-law took it to give to someone. I hate the e-scooters and bikes, they make no sound so oyu can't hear one coming up behind you! The dump site is useful for getting rid of bigger things, but some put just regular household rubbish, food waste etc and greasy fast food waste too.
DeleteGreasy food waste?! I can imagine what happens next - they close the dump! Ingo works with very fragile stuff - eating a banana or such was allowed. Some idiots ate chocolate and chips fell into the devices - now all food is banned...
DeleteIris; they won't close the dump, becuase then people will leave it on the footpath by the street instead. They will just scoop up everything every month like always.
DeleteI was going to say that the second photo looks like very disgruntled men in the trunks but then I wondered what the gruntled look like.
ReplyDeletejeanie; I have seen many trees with "people" in them, mostly women and I don't know why that is unless they are Mother Nature's daughters. I rarely see men in trunks or branches.
DeleteThe tree is beautiful. I love trees and the different textures of their bark.
ReplyDeleteThe dumping area seems a good idea, though people are not always using it properly.
I'm glad you now have a working printer again - it's annoying when things don't work, and it's always nice to have something new.
jabblog; I shall take more photos of different trees and bark textures for you. I am not surprised people here don't use the dump correctly, they don't even use the bins correctly. The recycle bin for "my" four flats section is constantly filled with non-recyclable items. Just yesterday I went out with cut up boxes and found the bin stinking with ashes and butts, at least a week's worth and too often vacuum cleaner dust as well, plus the usual greasy pizza boxes.
DeleteI posted my Colour of the Month post today, here's the link:

Debra She Who Seeks; I shall come and read right away.
DeleteSo pleased that, with your new purchase, your printer issue has been solved.
ReplyDeleteI always find trees fascinating ... from trunks to branches to leaves, I just like seeing trees!
Wishing you a good week ahead, I just find the days go by so quickly!
All the best Jan
Lowcarb team member; I love trees too, also huge rocks and the ocean.
DeleteI love the trees and glad you got a new printer.
ReplyDeleteDVArtist; I am not happy that I needed to buy a new printer but I am very happy that I now have a working one again. I do wish ink wasn't so expensive.
DeleteIs that a blanket in the basket? It looks rather nice! I wonder why someone wrote "Wow, you think I was born yesterday" on one of the appliances in the dump area?
ReplyDeleteSteve Reed; it may have been a blanket or possibly a cardigan, I din't touch it to find out, it had been raining and most things down there were wet and beginning to smell bad. I wonder if the message was from one insulter to another, there are people around here who regularly start fights with others. They will grow out of that eventually.
DeleteFrankly I am surprised that you have not sprayed those virginal garage doors with graffiti such as "RIVER WOZ HERE!" and "ELSIE RULES OK?" or simply "DRIFTING THROUGH LIFE" with a picture of a rubber duck on a pond.
ReplyDeleteYorkshire Pudding; shame on you! Do you really think I would graffiti anything? I have thought of painting a picture on my own garage door, but changed my mind. It already has some graffiti and others do too. I think it was done by one of the homeless who was "caught and moved on" by the police one time, they find an empty garage and move in using the driveway to build fires for cooking and warmth and often using one as a "shop" for drug dealings.
DeleteLovely photos, dear Carla! The tree is really fascinating!
ReplyDeleteLinda's Relaxing Lair; thank you.
DeleteSo sorry, Elsie. Thank you for letting me know.
DeleteI love the candles next to the playground fence. They remind me of piano keys, and I would move them to form that pattern ;)
ReplyDeleteCharlotte; those candles are decorative metal strips attached to the fence.
DeleteI thought as much. I'd need a saw and a soldering iron to do this - not much chance of success ;) Had I been there, I'd asked the fence-put-uppers to please follow my plan.

ReplyDeleteFascinating what people throughout or even what they destroy. We are all so wasteful and repair shops are a rarity. I am guilty as charged too.

Wiswebwoman; I try very hard to not be wasteful, mostly by NOT buying things I don't need even though I might want them at the time, I realise it would be a short-lived joy, so back on the shelf it goes and the money stays in my wallet.
DeleteCongratulations on your new printer! Thanks for sharing such a beautiful and peaceful aspect of your world!!
