Wednesday's Words on a Friday

The original Words for Wednesday was begun by Delores and eventually taken over by a moveable feast of participants when Delores had computer troubles. Sadly, Delores has now closed her blog forever due to other problems.

The aim of the words is to encourage us to write. A story, a poem, whatever comes to mind.

If you are posting an entry on your own blog, please let us know so we can come along to read it and add a few encouraging words.

This month the words/prompts are supplied by Janice and can be found here

This week's words/prompts are:

1.tapestry  2.machine  3.apple  4.bathroom  5.broomstick  6.lightning

and/or:

1.recipe  2.order  3.wasp  4.explain  5.never  6.imagine

Here is my story:

A sudden fierce banging woke Grandpa from his nap and he shuffled into the kitchen asking what on earth it was. “Grandma is in the bathroom with the broomstick, bashing at a wasp that got in through the hole in the flyscreen,” said Rachel, “she’s furious at you for not getting that fixed.” “I’ve been meaning to,” said Grandpa, “I just keep forgetting.”

“That’s what Grandma said,” replied Rachel, “by the sound of it the wasp might be behind the washing machine, I can hear the clang of metal and the bash of the wall when the broomstick hits both.”

“I guess I should go and apologise again,” said Grandpa. “I wouldn’t bother her right now,” suggested Rachel, “she said she won’t put up with more of your explaining and already called Roger to bring some new screening first chance he gets. He said he’d swing by after work today.”

“That seems like the best solution,” said Grandpa. “Did she ask you to come and make dinner for us again?” “She did,” said Rachel, “and has a special request too.” “Oh?” said Grandpa. “Has she been talking about clearing the attic again?” “Yes,” said Rachel. "You know how cluttered it is and she worries that a lightning strike might set it all on fire.” “That woman can imagine herself into a right fuss over things like that while most people never give it a second thought,” said Grandpa.

The bathroom noise ceased but Grandma didn’t make an appearance, so Grandpa went to knock on the door. “Are you alright in there dear?” “Just catching my breath,” said Grandma opening the door at last. “I got the little bugger,” she said and Roger is coming to fix the screening, so you can just keep on forgetting about like you always do,” she said.

“Ah, Jeanie,” he said, “you know I don’t forget on purpose. It’s just things in my head don’t seem to stay in the proper order these days.” “I have been noticing that,” said Jeanie gently, “that’s why I want to get the attic cleared out now, while we still remember to do it. There’s a lovely old tapestry up there, made by my Grandma Eileen and I want Rachel to have it. I already gave her Eileen’s old recipe book and today she is making us an old-fashioned apple pie from it to have after the roast chicken dinner which is in the oven already.”

    1. Margaret D; thank you. Grandma realises Grandpa is getting forgetful and worres about dementia.

  4. Don´t tell but it sounds a weeeee bit like someone here when it get´s to cleaning up.... or clearing out, rather.
Oh, my... the cellar here. LOL, I´m just too scared to do that job.
Hm. My Brother sadly forgot some items in the attic and they fouled. Some 1970´s chairs. AND! He ripped off the 70´s tapestry as well. Boy, was I mad.

Great story. Reminding me of so much (still have that apple-"thingy" in the freezer for my friend fK).

    1. Iris; I don't have a cellar or attic, but I have a garage full of stuff that doesn't fit in the flat. I know it needs sorting and cleaning but I don't like going down there alone since the homeless people started hanging around.

  7. Grandma went to a lot of trouble to get rid of the wasp. I guess she didn't want an invasion, and possibly a nest.

    1. jabblog; nobody wants a wasp nest inside the house, so grandma was determined to squash that particular bug.

  8. I wouldn't want Grandma coming after me with a broomstick! She's a warrior. I'd give her my share of apple pie at dinner. The roast chicken is more to my liking.

    1. Val; I wouldn't want grandma after me either! But I wouldn't be giving away my share of apple pie, maybe a store bought one, but never a home made one, they are delicious. I might do roast chicken myself tomorrow.

  9. Brooms are good for going after pests. I enjoyed the story and agree, go through the attic now while you still can.

    1. messymimi; I use brooms outside to sweep away nests when I find them, but always wait until the wasps have gone for the day. There is one way up high by the upper story windowsill that I can't reach. The attic is more a reminder to myself to get busy clearing out the shed.

  10. I admire grandma and her tenacity - sometimes you have to do things yourself instead of relying on others. Good use of the prompts.

    Have a lovely day.

    1. lissa; it's true, sometimes you do have to take matters into your own hands, more so when you get unwanted wasps flying into your home.
